To <ly W.fe, When love was fresh at tho badness, Ami poor thought was frightened away, My brain was a delicate twilight, t\ itli a muse in each tremulous rny. My heart was a fairy casket, M ith gems of the richest hue— While fancy would brighten each jewel That spoke to my spirit of you, Thr album became ns an altar, Where T laid the first fruits of my soul, And my life lay breathing and dreaming In the joy of thy sweet control. There was something I dared not to question, And something I cared not to know— for loro at first sight is a rapture, That heaven will sometimes bestow. And now, when mellowed by distance, I look hack on that dream of the past, Those visions are nearer and dearer In he light that they used to cast. For tlie love of those days is deeper, And its mystery still untaught'; While yet something I cannot discover, In tho heart of its voiceless thought. Something the future may answer, When the angel of life lifts tho veil ; When tho silver cord shall be loosened, And the shadows of earth shall fail. “As tlie Fellow Said !” That fellof who has the credit of having said so many tilings, must have been a marvel ously versatile character. Where did he live nnd who was he? Ilia travels must have been extensive, for thousands of men in all parts of the country, tell funny, quaint things, and wind up with, “as the fellow said/’ ITow do they know tho fellow said, unless they heard him ? Like most of people, who talk a great deal “the fellow” says a good many stupid things and some that were better left unsaid. It occasionally occurs to one, that, perhaps he is sometimes wrongfully accused, nnd when people who say things they feel cheap over, or nro ashamed of, they often charge “the fellow” of having boon the anchor thereof. One is forced to such a conclusion, in con' templation of tho contradictory remarks said to havo originated with him. Might it not bo possible that, every man who quotes him, makes “the fellow” father his own peculiar views of tilings? There have been other cases of as great injustice. Know ing “the fellow” is not likely to he within bearing to contradict false representations, even cowardly men might accuse him of their own base sentiments. However, “the fellow” has some occasion for congratulation, for many a witty, laugha ble remark is charged to him, in the most off hand manner, as if nobody expected the fel low could say any but the brightest things in the world.- Upon second thought, may be people do not nil refer to t lie same individual, but that each one has a special, particular “fellow” of his O’.t n. In that ca3o it is but fair to specify, and not say in the most natural way, “as the fellow said,’ taking it for granted that one ought to know who “the fellow" is. That leaves people to their own conjectures, and as to finding out to whom the speaker alludes it cannot be done, any more than if he were the man in the moon, “as the fellow said.”—Elm Orlou, An agricultural paper says strawberry beds may be protected from birds, by running a wire along the walk to which a cat is chained. Her movements up and down the length of tho wire will keep the birds away. Where there is no chain, the wire can bo run through tho cat, and heated to a temperature Hint will fill the cat with a longing to keep moving. The most original spelling we have ever seen is the following, It beats phonetics.—Bo you be—a tub. SO oh ! pea—a top. Be 80—bat. See 80—cat. Tea 80—pat. Arc 80—rat. See oh ! double you—cow. See you bee—cub. See a bee—cab. Be you double tea—butt. cCc a double ell —call. There is a law in Rhode Island by which any man may be fined five dollars for telling another he lies. There ought to be another law fining him ten dollars if he proves it.— That's what hurts. An old minister, the othor day, asked a woman what could be done to induce her hus band to attend church. “I don’t know,” she said, 'Unless you were to put a pipe and a jug of whisky in the pew.” Four little negroes on J. A. Moseley’s plant ation in Putnam county died in one day last week, it is supposed from eating a dead rabbit, vl.ic.'i they found in an old field, or meningi tis, or catifrrh. Doctors will- disagree,, you know. Since Napoleon’s death, country physicians are growing crazy over the cases of embolism developed throughout the land. Last week in Ohio, a young lady died from what a round headed old doctor said was ft heart klot or err oyolism of the heart,” she revived irt an hour, and it was found sho had been temporarily choked by a chew cf gum which she had swal lowed. -i contributor to ope of the magazines csti mates that, “if our esteemed ancestor, the late Colonel Adam, the apple-eater, had lived till now, and bad never trimmed his finger nails they would have been a thousand yards long.’ R “ !e Bl ind is said to bo overrun with nnee.
