“Though Lost to Sight to Memory l>eur,”
One of your correspondents, in yostorday’i
Issue, asks for the author of “Though lost to
sight to memory doer.’* This familiar lino
appeal* in n poem ly Ruthven JonVyns, first
published in the Greenwich Mainline, one
hundred and seventy years ago. Tennyson
has something similar in his "In Memorinm. .
I copy Jcnltyns’ poem for you. N. lb
Sweetheart, good by ! the flutt'ring sail
Is spread to waft mo far from thee,
And soon beforo the fav’ring gale
My ship shall bound upon tlio sea.
Perchance, all desolate and forlorn,
These eyes shall miss thee many a year,
Put unforgotten evory charm,
Thongh lost to sight to mem'ry dear.
Sweetheart, good bv ! One last embrace 1
0 cruel Pate 1 true souls to sever I
Tet in this heart’s most sacred placo
Thou, thou alone shalt dwell forever 1
And still shall recollection ttnee
In Fancy’s mirror, ever near,
Each smile, each tear, that form, that face,
Though lost to sight to mem’ry dear.
■W •
Sweetheart, good by ! though nevermore
The wave may bring mo back to (life,
Thongh thrown upon some distant shoro
By ongry wind and surging sea,
My constant heart would still recall
Thy soft brown eyes, and browner hnir,
And know thy tones, thy touch, thy nil,
Thongh lost to sight to mem'ry dear.
“Eva.” another fair correspondent, sends
the lines of Jenkyns, with the additional in*
formation that the name of the magazine in
which they wero published was the “Greer.*

publication 1701 or 1702.
Strange Experience of a Convict.
Several yearn before the war tho wife of a
man named Richard Raines, living near San
dcrsville, "Washington county, died suddenly,
tinder suspicious circumstances. Raines' ex
planation of his wife's death was that slio had
died of cramp; but tho community, believing
that slie had been poisoned, sent for a physi
cian from Augusta to examine the body. A
jwst mortem examination was made of the
stomach. On the trial the physician testified
thnt he believed he had detected traces of ar
senic, but would not swear to tho fact positive
ly. The feeling in the community was very
strong against tho accused, and he was found
guilty—although the evidence was only cir
cumstantial—but recommended to the mercy
of the Court. lie was sentenced to imprison
ment for life in the penitontiary, and in 1862
■was sent under guard to Milledgeville, lie
had already been confined in the jail at San
dersville three years, while his case was un
dergoing investigation. Towards the close of
tho war all the convicts in the penitentiary,
with the exception of those convicted for life,
were permitted to join the Confederate army.
Raines was left behind with six others. These
remained with the keepers for some time, and
■were several times moved from place to place
to avoid capture by the enemy.
At length, at tho close of tho war, the peni
tentiary was left unguarded and Raines quietly
walked out. After drifting about for some
time in tlig lower part of the State, he finally
landed in Florida. Ilcro he went to work,
made a little money, and married. In time
his whereabouts became known to certain par
ties in Sandersvilie, and one of them informed
the Governor of the fact. Gov. Smith, being
under the impression that the crime and con
viction had occurred since the war, offered a
reward of $250 for his apprehension. Lost
January he wns arrested, carried to Atlanta
and turned over to tho keeper of the convicts,
lie was placed at work on the Georgia Westera
Railroad and remained there until Thursday.
During tho next six months his conduct is said
t have been exemplary, and Mr. Alexander,
the keeper, became so interested in his behalf
that he gave him much assistance towards pro
curing his release. In the meantime his neigh
bors in Florida prepared a long petition to
Gov. Smith, potting forth substantially the
abovo facts ; hadit signed by some of the best
men in the county and forwarded it to Atlanta.
On Wednesday Gov. Smith granted Raines a
. full pardon. Several charitable persons fur
nished him with a little money and ho returned
to Florida yesterday, a free man,—[Chronicle

ington City, according to ttie Now York Sun,
is the culminating point of the infamous “ring
rule” of greedy officials. Thnt journal says i
“ Neither New Y'ork, Philadelphia, nor New
Orleans, with all the scandalous jobbery to
which they have been subjected, can compare
with the brief reign and record of fraud and
corruption at Washington. In eighteen months
nn acknowledged debt of $17,000,000 has been
piled np in various forms, without counting
three and a-half' millions received from Con
gress, two and three-quarter millions obtained
from taxes, and floating obligations estimated
at two millions, but which may be four. This
is the result of Ring rule in that short time ;
and, to make it more complete, there is a pre
vailing belief that large issues of certificates
and bonds have been fraudulently put out un
der pretense of forgery and robbery.
The robust managing editor of the Pittsburg
Dispatch is toiling manfully with the flannel
conundrum. About a year ago he bought a
fall suit of white flannel. After the first wash
ing Ills son, who weighs a hundred and two
pounds less than the father, found that the
suit just fitted him. Two more washings made
them just the size for his five year old boy, and
at the end of the season there was not enough
{ them left for a good sized dishcloth. Where
has all that flannel gone to? lie says he
would willingly take his whole family and his
mother-in-law to a lecture which would explain
it, and pay double price, at that.
