I Lour before the war the following simple but
charming vhm D|ipwni In a short-lived paper
at Little Rock, Arknuaas, without signature or ad

ing with the Inst or the summer months, their re
vival at tills time Is at least seasonable; and It I"
possible that their restoration to current print may
elicit amte tnrdy sign from the unknown bard w ho
need never have felt ashamed to own himsell the

Tint oi.n CANOF.
Where the rocks are pray, and the shore Is steep,
Ami the water* below look dark ami deep,
Where the nipped pine, In Its lonely pride,
Leans gloomily over the murky tide;
Whore the reeds and rushes are fong and rank,
And the reeds prow thick on the winding bank:
Where the shadow Is heavy the whole day thro’,
There lies at Its moorings the Old Canoe.
The fr*cte** pnddfes are Idly dropped,
I.fke a sea-bird's wings, that the storm has topped,
And crossed on the rnllinp, one o’er one,
Ufcc the folded hands when the work is done;
While busily bark and forth lietwecn
The apider stretches his silvery screen,
And the solemn owl with his dull “ too-boo,”
Settles down on the side ot the Old Canoe,
The stern, half snnk In the slimy wave.
Rots slowly awsy In Its living prnve,
And the green moss creeps o’er Its dull decay,
Hiding Its moulderinp dust, away,
Like the hand that plants o’er the tomb a (lower,
Or the Ivy that mantles the (ailing tmver;
While mauy a blossom o( loveliest hue
Springs up o’er the stern of the Old Canoe.
The eurrentless waters ore dead and slid—
Hut the light wind plays with the boat at will,
And lazily in and out again
It floats the length of the rusty chain.
Like the weary march of the hands of time,
That meet and part at the noontide chime,
And the shore is kissed st each turning anew,
Ry tfts dripping bow ol the Oltf Canoe.
Oh ; many a time, with a carelss hand,
I have pushed It sway from the pebbly strand,
And paddlerf It down where the stream riinsquick
Where the whirls are wild and the eddies are thick.
And laughed as I leaned o’er the rocking side,
And looked below In the broken - tide,
To see that the faces and boats were two,
That were mirrored back from the Old Canoe.
But now, as I'lean o’er the crumbling side,
And look below it the sluggish tide,
The face that Tsee there is graver grown,
And the laugh that I hear has a soberer tone,
And the hands that lent to the light skid wings
Have grown familiar with sterner things.
But I fore to think of the hours that sped’
As Track'd where the whirls their white spray shed
Ere the blossom waved, or the green grass grew,
O'er the mouldering stern ol the Old Canoe.
Tlie True Education.
Some years ago we read n french book called
“The- Attic Philosopher,’’ in which occurs n
atriking definition of patriotism. A soldier
who had sorvsd under the great Napoleon was
urging his nephew lo enlist under tho banner
or France. ‘’What care t for the land ?” said
young France; “f own none of it.” "It is
not the land," earnestly replied tho old mus
taeh, “tßat makes your country ; it is all the
associations of yonr life: the prayers you
lisped’ nt your mother's knee, yonr father’s
nod of approbation or sign of reproof, your
sister’s love, yonr Brother’s generous and kind
deeds, the (Towers in green dells nnd on sunny
hill aides, the fruits you have gathered,-the
birde’ nests admired hut not touched’, the trees
that have given yon shade when weary, the
breciM that have fanned your heated brnw,
the virtuous deeds you have done, the kind
words you' have spoken, and the sweet tones
you Have heard 1 , the noble men and the charm
ing women you have known, the children in
Jon play ground, the pretty girls you see in
khe street—these make your country. You
will defend them." Of course the young man
did. We have quoted from memory, and have
led unsaid a groat many things the nnblo old
soldier put into the heart of his nephew to
conceive, but we have said enough to make
the application wo desire, viz : that a better
showing of whet makes men good or noble or
great could not bo made than is contained in
this eloquent spocch of the veteran militairo.
In every act of one’s life one is educated for
good or evil. Flow much it beoomes us then
to nut only good influences about our children.
Should they not be led through pleasant walks
in shady places, “with kind thoughts seated in
courteous hearts," to nature, to beauty, to be
nevolent nets, to virtuous deeds, to the sense
of all good, to God himself?—[From August
