THE NEMESIS OF POLITICS,
Tin' following irtio’o from 11>*•
Macon Telegraph In..* the old time
ring about it: In tho Ge *:gi:i n
nto of 1849 among niioi
young and #l.l men Hicha.d II
Clark and Joseph E. Blown. Lu
ther J. Glenn was th# secretary of
that body, made so by the vole oi
Clark, and Alfred H. Colquitt wa
hia first assi tint. those moll have
been intimately connected with
Georgia j o ities and two of them are
#til) prominent figu: on. G.enn rose
well iu hia profession and hia party,
and was nominated for Congress in
J.87'2, when lie was defeated by A'ox
andcr H. Stephens with one .Fame
Freeman, a Radical, and by the use
of tho Jeffersonian Democratic orgau,
the Atlanta Sun. Clark also rose
rapidly in his profession, becoming
a circuit judge, one of tho codifieit
of the laws of Georgia and Stnte
counsel iu the Durictn bank litiga
tion. He was very prominent in
the f st rank of the Democratic j ai
ty, and his vote decided the nomina
tion of .Toe Brown when the conven
tion had exausted itsc.t in a contest
over Lamar, Lumpkin and Gardner.
11l health and a loss of property in
terfered with his success, and upon
the inauguration of < lovernor Mc-
Daniel, whose nomination was se
cure 1 by tho scurvy trick of Brown s
henchmen and followers, he was re
moved from a place on the bench he
had a lorncd to make way for a pro
vincial attorney and politician. C ol
quitt served one term in Congress
before the war, has since been elec
ted Governor twice and is now in
the Senate of the United States by
the favor and exertions of Brown,
whom lie had eliminated from a po
litical tliralldom that else was in
surmountable. 1 lie recent contest
between these two has resulted in
the discomfiture of Colquitt, who
stands defeated in the presence of
a coalitiou formed by his more dex
terous opponent.
The Nemesis of politics has laid
its hand upon Colquitt, who dragged
Brown from the depth of political
degradation only to see him rise up
and punish the people who have
condoned his rank offense and e.otu
-01 him with high honors.
Stephen*, the intimate and trust
ed friend of Brown, slaughtered
Glenn. The henchmen of Brown
raised up McDaniel to oust from a
#mall but to him important position,
the man whose vote had made Brown
0 political possibility. Colquitt is
fiercely assaulted by tho man whom
Re rescued from political degredation
under circumstances which mean
jt'int he or Colquitt must go down.
The end is not yet, and these tw o
men must contest in the political
arena, while the people of Georgia
are the real sufferers. Brown, back
ed by a Republican Senate, of which
one of its organs declares he is the
hero, stands and poses as the proud
political prestidegitatuer. NViil the
band of Nemesis be laid upon liim,
and when ? This rises to the lips of
4’ie mortified and indignant people
of Georgia. Retribution that he
has so long avoided and escaped by
an adroitness and ingenuity that
seem to partake of superhuman pow
er will halt at his door and leave a
scar on his pride. It is the code of
nature that no violation of her laws
can go unpunished. An excess of
brings depression. Over
indulgence of appetite is followed by
the pains of indigestion. And upon
this principle is founded the written
and unwritten law 7 of human action.
Society has provided the gibbet and
the dungeon for criminals. There
are crimes against society, individu
als, and the masses of the people,
wlioso punishment is left to an invis
ible Nemesis.
A henchman of .Senator Brown in
the fullness of pride for his late hu
miliation of the people of Georgia
asks: What are you going to do
about it?
The form and truculent spirit of
the inquiry are not new. Boss
Tweed, who once ruled a larger
State than Georgia w ith a rod of iron
who squandered millions upon his
/ .vorites, bought and sold public of
fices, and rioted in the luxury of
power and place, asked this when
confronted hv the offict rs of the law
and his crime*.
Tweed died a pauper, friendless
and alone in a convict’s ceil, llis
family, his friends and his riches
were scattered to the four quarters
of the globe. . The honest people of
New York turned upon the creaiure
who deceived, plundered and insult
e 1 them and despoiled him of lijs
p imp and power. The people of
Georgia so long used to corrupt
practices and unworthy reprcsenta
t ves, seem to be paralyzed beyond
tne point of resentful action ; but
there is a Nemeris that watches and
notes the time when their wrongs
. h„uii he lighted.
EDiiOKIAL PARAGRAPHS.
Dawson has a novel suit. A ska
ting rink ha* been declared a nui
sance because of the noise, and con
sequent annoyance to those occupy
ing the rooms below the hall. The
proprietors refuse to obey the coun
cil, which declared it a nuisance.
A benevolent gentleman gave a
h amp a quarter, and said: “Now.
don't you spend it in drink.” “You
o to li—I” responded the tramp.—
• I guess I’ll do wlmt I b'ame please
with my own money. Who are you,
a iyhow !"
Trade between Georgia and New
Yoik is made free by constitutional
I ro\i-ion, because the founders of
tho c .li titution knew it would be
udvantage ms to the citizens of both
States. It follows, then, as a lioccs
„try consequence, that tho people of
this State w mid he in a lika measure
beiielitted by unhampered t ado with
Canada, Cuba, England, France, or
any other country. Trade should
lie made a* neatly free as possible.
When this has been accomplished
there will he an end of business de
pression.—Albany Advertiser.
There are over 100,000 office hold
ers in the United States in the ser
vice of th* general government.—
Now. let us figure a little. If Cleve
land should commence immediately
after his inauguration to make new
appointments to take the place of
Republican#, and work ten hours
each day for one year of HOB days,
Ihe would have to make an appoint
j merit every two minutes in order to
get through the list by the end of
j the year. What foolishness it is to
, talk about making a clean sweep as
the fiaet thing for Mr. Cleveland to
do.
The editor of the Americas Recor
der, who was recently a citizen of
a Northern Stnte, says in reference
to the ku kluxing of negroes in Illi
nois : “The places referred to are
near the old home of the editor of
the Recorder, and the action of the
people of that section bears out the
assertion that we have often made,
that the negroes are more kindly
treated in the South than in the
North. We remember well, before
the war, when the whites in Mans
field, ()liio, drove every negro out of
the town, seriously wounding a num
ber, without any apparent provoca
tion.

Taking Care of the Body.
The Christian Index, the leading
organ of the Baptist Church in the
South, published in Atlanta, Ga., in
itu issue of l)**.* 1 xau Ls- c-i
lowing editorial:
Too many people seem to think that
a religious newspaper should be con
fined to the discussion of moral and
religious subjects only, forgetting that
religion li.-.s to do both with the bod
ies and the souls of men. “Prove all
things, hold fast that which is good,”
has much to do with the practical side
of life as it has with the moral side.
Our readers will hear testimony that
in all questions discussed in the Index,
the practical has been duly set forth.
Iu this paragraph, therefore, we only
seek to present an article worthy of
commendation. After subjecting it
to the above test we have tried Swift’s
Specific ami found it good—good as a
blood purifier, good as a health tonic,
in this opinion we are sustained by
some of the best men of the church.
Rev. Jesse H. Campbell, the Nestor
of the Baptist denomination in Geor
gia, says : “It is ray deliberate judg
ment that Swift’s Specific is the grand
est blood purifier ever discovered. Its
effects are wonderful, and I consider
them almost miraculous. There is
no medicine comparable to it.” Dr.
11. C. llornady, one of the host
known ministers in our church, says:
“Swift’s Specific is one of the best
blood purifiers in existence.”
These brethren speak advisedly.—
But few preparations can bring for
ward such endorsements. The Index
desires only to endorse these state
ments. \Ve have witnessed the bene
ficial cftects of this medicine, not on
ly in our household, but in several
other cases where seemingly all other
remedies had failed. It is purely a
vegetable compound, scientifically
prepared, and perfectly harmless in
its composition. It renews the blood
and builds up broken down systems —
gives tone and vigor to the constitu
tion, as well as restores the bloom of
health to the suffering. Therefore,
vve do not deem it inconsistent with
the duties of a religious journal to |
say this much in its behalf.

fantum.
L'MWV Remedies are in greater demand
1 than such as counteract diarrhoea and
dysentery. During the summer and fall
people of all ages suffer more or less from
bowel affections. Children at the teething
age are more particularly disposed' to sucli
disturbance. Slight cases neglected become
serious and sometimes fatal, when the time
ly use of suitable remedies might arrest
them at once.
Our “Diarrhoea Mixture,” for a long
while used by Dr. J. G. Westmoreland in
his practice, is kept all the time by famili.s
accustomed to its use, as a safeguard
against dangerous spells of dysentery, etc.
Cholera mor’ us, cholera infantum and
even cholera, c. nn >; have any more cer

It must be remembered that one remedy
