GOOD GOVERNMENT.

Ml ' 1
Augusta Ckroukle:
Nations anti Elates learn by expe
Stance, a* do individual*, and i, is
-olk'ii the case-that the people rise to
* full realization of tin ir ] r vi eges
by lessons learned in the school of
humiliation. Civil liberty and just
• government are matters in which the
.rights of the people are involved,
imatter* in which they should feel n
'been interest, yet instances are not
-wanting where misgovt riiment has
.resulted from the carelessuesa of the
■jpeop’e themselves.
It need not, that there should be
rgross neglect or inalfeamuce iu office
.-in order that the health and vigor of
. a community should decline. All that
Via'required is that tho people sit
quietly at home and complain of the
. administration of justice or of the m
. efficiency of persons iu official sta
t lions without lifting a band to rome
-dy the evil complained of.
All wisdom and power is not con
fined to a few. Power lies with the J
people. Government is with the j
people. The trouble L that the peo
pie will not make their voices known.
They murmur nndj’whisper when
they should cry aloud from tU
housetop. They complain of evi's j
which they need not tolerate.
The ballot box is the remedy for
all political evil, and there the peo
ple should make known their wishes.
It has come to pass that only a part
fff the people avail themselves of this
privilege. Citizens remain at home,
or go about their business, pleading
want of time as an excuse, or impa
tient at the trouble. Asa conse
quence, when the elections are over
and the successful candidates are an
Bounced, “Fair Play” and “Good
Citizen,” and divers others fill the
/Nilumus of the press with loud com
plaints. against the corrupt ballot
and the inefficiency of our municipal
officers, legislators, &c. The remedy
lies in the hands of the people, but
it is a remedy so commonplace and
pimple, that there is but little hope
©fits adoption. The multitude of
people are like Naaman, the Syr
ian. They are willing to do some
great thing ; they are willing to agi
tate and harrangue and complain,
but they are not willing to do so
simple an acf ns the turning of a
square out of their wav. to cast n. lint
lot or attend a public meeting. Our
people have not had much trouble in
the past, but it is possible that the
future may hold ill store a defeat so
humiliating and overwhelming that
they cannot at once recover them 1
selves.
The signs of the times warn us to
be vigilant. Here and there in the
North and Fast, Hashes of a peut up
tide of passion, have been seen. We
cannot tell when we may be couvuls
ed and the ranks of those who have
no interest in good government and
do care for the welfare of the county
those who ‘-license mean when they
aty liberty”—a kali carry victory
perched upon their baum-vu.
Truth will make fiieuds. Lies
jsill make enemies.—GriiHu Hun.
Suppose you try that on and see
how it fits. Step out into the street
and tell the truth and act the truth
with every man you meet. Give no
hypocritical smile to Smith’s poor
joke, don’t ask Jones a question
more about his family or how he en
joyed his trip than you really wish
to know, don’t be glad to learn any
thing that you aro not glad to learn,
or sorry to hear anything you are
not sorry to hear. Try this a while
and then let us hear you repeat the
above speech. Tell mean men they
are mean and tell homely girls they
are homely-. No, no ; truth's splen
did, but it isn’t popular. It brings
“not peace, but a sword.” —Macon
Rpw-s.
There are many Georgians pack
ing up their traps, now-a-day, and
piaking for Arkansas and Texas. In
fegnrd to the litter State, Gov. Ire
land has made an appeal to the pub
lic for aid to the sufferers from
she drouth in that State. “And yet,
now and then,” remarks the Thom
asville (Ga.,) Times, “you will see
a Georgia cracker hitch up his team
and head for Texas, leaving a State
and section where failure of crops is
unknown. "NY e will do the Georgia
grackers the justice howeyer, to state
Jhat generally, at the end of the
id year, lie is footing it back to
old Georgia."
“Ring out the old: ring in the
pew 1” has no reference to medicines.
The numerous novelties in that line
which have only an ephemeral exis
tence uie seaicely worthy to be men
tioned iu the same category as that
old reliable remedy known as Cons
aeus Honey of Tar, which our grand
fathers used when the boys and girls
had coughs, colds and diseases of the
throat and lungs.

THE WATER POWER OK GEOR
GIA.
From a letter from Georgia, pub
lished in the Industrial Review, of
Philadelphia, we make the following!
extracts. Tiio letter is evidently
from a non-resident of this State,
but ono who has investigated for
himself, and who gives the result of
such investigations, in sncli u tone
and inauner as to carry conviction.
The extracts we give below consti
tute only n,ii(r!l fruetiou of the ex
cellent document:
"No Slate has better farm lands
I than has Georgia. At tho same time
there are table lauds and hillsides so
|hi r.cn uud rugged that they barely
afford pasturage for iho flocks. Ad
| vaoced modes of though and practi
cal experiments have discoved other
uses to which these may lie put, and
many a spot which failed to provide
J sustenance for the farmer, has given
forth rich ores to tlit miner, or has
offered an opportunity of increased
j wealth to ihe manufacturer.
“It is remarkable that the superb
, facilities for manufacturing enter
j prises did not sooner occur to pur
! people. A irnrj glance over our
| streams should have opened their
eyes. In the begining of mauufac
! turns the first consideration must be
; the availibility of water-power. In a
■ more advanced state of civilization,
j human ingenuity may be brought to
| bear to supplement Nature and to
j supply natural deficiencies, but in
the infancy of an industry, economy
is everything, and a powerful agent
; is a strong fall of water which can be
: easily utilized,
“Manufacturers in Georgia maybe
said to be yet in their infancy, but
now that her people are beginning to
understand her resources, great
things may he expected, and that in
the near future.
“Water power is abundant, and
easy to be utilized in Georgia. It is
a lamentable fact that few of her own
people know this, and strangers are
almost entirely ignorant of ii. It is
.commonly supposed that only the
Savannah, the Chattahoochee, and
possibly one or two other of her riv
ers can he utilized. The truth is,
there are a dozen rivers, to speak
with great moderation, which are
pursuing their peaceful way to the
sea, adding nothing to the wealth of
the State, which ought to be turning
the wheels of factories and mills and
gladdening the heart of the people
with the hum of busy labor.”
Setting Eggs —We are prepared
to furnish a limited number of poul
try raisers with the purest and best
Brown Leghorn eggs, for hatching
purposes, at 75 cents for 13. Our
chickens are of the finest and heal
iniest breeds known to the poultry
world. If you desire a setting of the
eggs leave your order at this office at
once. For the present no eggs will
he shipped by express. The Brown
Leghorn, full blood, slow to set, but
are continuous layers and very indus
trious as well as long lived.
Renews Her Youth.— Mrs. Pboe
be Cbeslev, Peterson, Clay Cos.,
lowa, tells us the following remarka
ble story, the truth of which is
vouched for by the residents of the
town : “I am 73 years old, have been
troubled with kidney complaints and
lameness for many years ; could not
dress myself without help. Now I
am free from all paiu and soreness,
unJ cant • Mn to mi nil my own house-1
work. I owe my thanks to Electric
Bitters for having renewed my youth,
and removed completely all disease
and pain.” Try a bottle, only 50c. I

Stanley and Livi-'gstcn.
When Stanley after years of untir
ing energy, discovered Livingston the
great African Explorer, the first
question the old hero asked was “Did
you bring any of Harper’s Old Nelson
County Whiskey with you”? Upon re
ceiving a reply in the affirmative, he
exclaimed “Thank heaven!” and
burst into tears. Harper’s celebrated
