We are pained to hear of the death
of our old friend, Mr. Richard Petty,
which transpired at his home in Hen
ry county one day recently. He was
an upright, honest man and beloved
hv all who knew him. Aged about
54 years. He was a son of Mt. Lit

Mr. J. T. Aikiti, a most worthy
ami deserving gentleman of Brewer’s
district, died of consumption on Sun
day last. Aged about 55 years. He
leaves a wife and eight children, be
sides many relatives and friends to
mourn his departure.' He was a true
and noble man and wil be sadly miss

J. M. Allen of this city.
We are pleased to learn that Mr.
Fred Owsley and his charming wife
and beautiful babv girl, of Chicago,
will visit Covington in a few days and

hundred and sixty-five dollars, an en

An effort is being made to com
mence work in the old Newton coun
ty gold mine, near town, at an early
day. An experienced miner express
es his willingness to begin operations
so soon a certain necessary investiga
tions are made. We arc confident
that big money can be made by work
ing this mine. Forty years ago Cap
tain Looney dug with pick nud spade
81.800 worth of pure gold from this
mine, while Major Green Diamond
gathered enough of “the dust” from
a branch and hill side, two miles from
Looney’s camp, to pan him out about
one thousand dollars. This informa
tion is derived from what we consider
1 to be a truthful and authentic source.

The friends of General James P
Simms all over this state will lie pain
ed to learn that he is hovering be
tween life and death at his home in
this city. For some time past he hat
.eeii in feeble health, but not unti
liiite recently has hope of his recov
erv been aim st e’e paired of. Every
attention is being paid the sick Gen
eral by his devoted family, loving rel
atives and kim! friends, while the best
medical skill in our city, assisted by
that grand old physician, Dr. Steiner,
of Augusta, is doing a 1 tiiat can hi
done to save his life and nurse him
hack to health again. The tenderest
sympathy of all our people go out t >
this good man and the dear ones ol
his household in their trying hour of
sore ailiiction. We do most sincerely
hope that General Simms will not he
called from among us yet, hut will
be spared to us for many years to
come. He is one of the best, noblest
and purest men in the county and his
death would lie a calamity, not only
to this community, hut it would be
a serious loss to the state which lie has
so faithfully and gallantly served on
the red field of battle, an.l for whose
welfare and prosperity he has labored
so hard and earnestly in time of peace.
Again we indulge in the hope that
the Great Master will spare him to
liis people at least a little longer.
Having the material prosperity of
the farmers at heart we take pleasure
in calling the attention of the millers
and stock men of Newton and adjoin
ing counties to that wonderful pro
liu'tion, the scientific Cotto.i Seed
duller and Feed Grinder. Our prac
tical and progressive friend. Mr. S.
A. Starr, bought one of those mills
anil now grinds 70 pounds of ear eorn
into feed, and feeds liis Stock three
gallons of the meal per day, which is
a saving to him over the old method
of ten bushels per month per head of
(counting five pounds of meal to the
gallon, with corn at 65c. per bushel),
82,28 per month, or at eight working
months per year for stock 818,24 per
annum for each mule and horse. It
is a fact that Mr. Starr’s stock are
thriving better on this food than they
did on corn. On hulling cotton seed
and manurial purposes the advanta
ges are equally as great. We cannot
see how any thoughtful man, who has
the interest of his stock and pocket
at heart, can consent to be without
one of these mills, when they cost so
little, that is, if he lias the power
with which to run one. Mr. G. D.
Butler is the agent for this mill, ami
it would pay you well to see him and
buy one. We understand lie sells
them on the most liberal terms and
under the best of guarantees.
