The State of Georgia gives annual
ly to a negro college located in Atlan
ta, where social equality is taught and
practiced, the sum of #B.OOO. The
Gwinnett Herald, referring to the
capture of a desperate criminal in
that section, says: “Wimberly is a
graduate of the colored college in At
-1 uita, and lias given Georgia and her
sister State, South Carolina, consul
era hie trouble since he procured his
sheepskin.” There is food for serious
reflection in the above item.
Dr. Bynum, of Live Oak, Florida,
and Miss Anderson, of Wilkes coun
ty, Ga., gazed upon each other for
the lirst time, at the late Baptist con
vention in Albany. They met, they
loved—they married —all within three
days. Cnpt. John Triplett, the hand
some old bachelor of the Thomasville
Times, in speaking of the romantic
affair, says: “This episode is likely
to increase the attendance of unmar
ried females at all future conven-
lions.”
The recent misliehavjor at the M
E. Church in this city during divine
service is to he regretted, and some of
our citizens express a determination
to refer the matter to the courts, as it
is an open violation of the law to ere
ate a disturbance at church. We arc
told that three persons have already
been “spotted” ami if the offense is
repeated arrests will be made. It is
to be hoped that no more disorder will
be had in any of our churches, for if
there is, trou.ile will ensue.
We notice from the proceedings of
the late Medical Association ju Atlan
ta, that they passed a resolution en
dorsing a proposition to bore an arte
sian well for the use of the iusane
asylum at Milledgeville. The care
of our insane, deaf, dumb and blind,
is a duty which the -State cannot,
would not shirk, even if she could.
Pure water and plenty of it is one of
the greatest ol' blessings. If the in
mates of the insane asylum are in
need of more water they should have
it without stint. The matter will be
brought up before the summer session
of the legislature.

WISE AND OTHERWISE.
While in Montieello last week Col.

that he had heard that Col. Froln l

was completed from Macon t" Athens
that work would Is- resumed on .the
line from Montieello to Covington.
Now, in all seriousness, this it the

have heard in six mouths. Col. Mid

road will run U* ear* to the city of
Madison within one year.
A laud and improvement company is

In speaking of tin- r markable pc. • i
gress of the Emory orchestra, tin i
l’liue. ix says: “l'hc advancement of
.ois oiclnstra is due entirely to Prof .
Tom Jones, who takes a great inter
est in instructing the lioys.” Profess
or Jones is an njd Covingtß hoy and
we are glad to know tlint lie is quite
popular with the good people of Ox
ford and “solid” with the students of
Emory co lege He is connected wi'!,
the ieenolngical department and is a
irst class workman, understanding
mechanics thoroughly. He is an in
lustriou* is an and earns Lis bread by
the sweat of his honest brow. W,
have known Timm. s O. Jones for a
quarter of a eenttiry, and for more
than a decode he was our ct.mpanimi
l:y day and our “chum”by night, and
we always found him to be kind at
heart, gener, us in nature and just as
well ns cliar't thle to all mankind.—
Life, for our friend, has not been all
“sunshine and flowers,” but amid the
“ dark in 8S and the storm” he lias ev
er retained his manhood and met the
up* and downs found along the jour
ney of life with a st >ut heart and a
smiling face. At the age of 36 he
finds himself upon a suhstanei.il plat
form erected bv himself unaided and
alone. It gratifies us to know that
Professor Jones is and dug so well in his
new home, and we hope success will
crown his every effort and fame and
f. rtune will come to him as a fitting
reward for his industry, his honesty
and his untiring devotion to right
and duty.
We invite honest and industrious
people to make their homes in New
ton county because we believe there
is a gr- at and glorious future in store
for those who are willing “to labor
and to wait.” The dark and dismal j
days of a ton well remembered past'
have departed and are gone to come
no more. Financially, politically, so
daily, intellectual y and morally this
county stands far in advance of what
it did even three years ago. We are
at peace with each other and on speak
ing terms with the balance of the
world. Our local ilifferences have at
last lieen settled at the ballot box and
all true men have accepted the result
and gracefully yielded to the will of
the majority as expressed at the polls.
Our county may boa little in debt,
but we have good bridges, a handsome
court house and other subsandal im
provements to show why this debt
was created. We could dwell at length
upon this subject, and paint georgeous
pen pictures of the advantages of this
favored section, but it is not necessary
to relate all the possibilities in store
for us in one item Like the oft re
peated tale of love, we can take up
at any time this refreshing theme and
it vi ill be pleasant to write upon and
should, at least, In-interesting to read
as well as delightful to contemplate.
Taking everything into consideration
we doubt if there can lie found a bet
ter or more pleasant place lieneath
| the sun to live and die than right
here in Newton county.
