SUNDAY SCHOOL CELEBRA
TION, MAY 6TH.
The twelfth annual uelcbration uf
the Newton County Monday (School
Association came off in Oxford Friday
It was a most pleasant ami enjoyable
affair, there being between fifteeu hun
dred and two thousand persons pres

J euted and all reported to be .in good :
working order. The programme uud
| exercises were about tbe same as on
former occasions, with an addition j
of recitations, dialogues, songs, etc., |
by children representing their reapec
live schools, and which was one of the
most interesting features of tlie day.
Just ut the conclusion of tbe morn
ing exercises a rain came up ami
tbe large crowd were furced to seek
shelter in Mency Hall and other build
ings on and near the college grounds,
aud where an elegant dinner w as serv
ed by the generous people who had
prepared an abundance of good things
to eat for this 1 special occasion. Of
course we feasted with the Enterprise
school, numbering s.xty scholars, am
-ume near foundering ourself on tin
rich delicacies and varied subatancials
served by the fair mai Is and thought
mi matrons who have done so much
to build up and keep alive this popu
lai school. Owing to the rain the af
ternoon exercises were held in the
church, which was packed to over
dowing, many people being unable to
get standing room on the door or in
the gal.cry. The prize of fifty song
books for the best rendeied song was

THE MORTGAGE.
We worked through spring and winter,
through summer anil through fall,
!wt the Mortgage worked the hardest an
thestea a-st. pf all
It worked on nights and Sundays, it work
ed each holiday,
It settled down among us and never we t
away.
Whatever re kept from it seemed always a
theft;
It watched us every minute, ,eod ruled us
right and left;
The rust and-blight were with uss .melinites
and sometimes not;
The lark browed, scowling mortgage war
forever on the spot.
The weave! and the cut worm, they weni
as well as came;
The Mortgage staid forever, eating heai ti
all the same.
It nailed up every window, stood guard at
every door.
And happiness and sunshine made tliei;
home with us no more.
Till with failing crops and sickness we got
stalled upon the grade,
And there came a dark day upon us when
the interest wasn't paid ;
And there came a sharp foreclosure and the
farm was eheiply sold.
The children left and scattered, when they
hardly yet weregrown.
My v rife she pined and perished, and 1
found myself alone,
What she died of was a ‘mystery” the and. c
tors never knew;
But I knew she died of mortgage —just as
well as I wanted *o.
If to trace a hidden sorrow ware within a
doctor's art,
They’d ha' found a mortgage lying on that
woman's broken heart.
Worm or beetle, rough or tempest, on a
farmer's land may fall,
But for first class ruination, trust a mort
gage 'gainst them ail.
