Oa Friday night last Mr. Thomas
McNair, who lives near WmthviJle,
in Butts county, was called to the
door by an unknown party o r parties
and assassinated. It appears that the
party who called Mr. McNair up did
so on the pretense that his harness
were broke and he desired a light in
order to see how to fix them. McNair
produced the light and just as he got
to the door of his residence was fifed

house. Twelve buckshot entered his

PRESS CO^VENTI^N.
It was our happy privilege to he
present at the meeting of the Gcor

| Wednesday, May 11th. Our jour
ney from Covingt'-n to that wide
awHilc south Georgia city was without
special interest, and the business pro
deeding* ol' the Ass .ehitioti won and not
lie exciting reading to the public at
large, so we waive the usual prelimi
nary tetmirk* and proceed to give a
brief sketch of wlmt we heard and
saw during our ulwenee from home.
Reaching Valdosta Tuesday night w<
were met by a reception committei
who escorted the members and their
ladies tu the hotels near the railroad.
Ourself, with almtit forty others, were
signet) to the Stuart House, a most
excellent hotel, kept by a mo.-t excel
lent gentleman. For twenty years
Major Stuart has In on in the hotel
business in that city, having beet,
burned out four times during th t
period, yet he wears a bright smile,
carries a light heart in his hottest
breast ami niaki s a lif -long friemi ol
every guest who seeks rest beneath
fiis hospitable roof. Wednesday we
took dinner with Cnpt. Hump Smith,
State Senator from that district, anil
one of the liest and purest men now
in public life. We met his interest
ing fumi v, was shown his large orch
ard of fine Let onto pear trees, viuc
ya and, poultry yard, garden, melon
patch, etc. We feasted on a dinner,
the thought of which, makes us feel
good even now. The Captain has t
beautiful home and keeps it in that
ougli repair, and strange to say, a

of the Times, are hived by the peopli
j who say with pride and enthusiasm
that the Times is “e'ae power holiiim

town and county. On account of a
heavy rain the ride around the city
was abandoned. Wednesday night ;
magnificent banquet was teiu.orcd hj
the city to the press at Stuart’s opera
house, which lusted two lo r Oat
hundred ami fifty plates were si t and
overlive hundred dollars was paid fim
the supper. Toasts were offered and
many speech;s made. Il was au oc
casion of mirth and phasin' . Aft a
the but qtn t hull had been <h sorted
quite a number of the young folks
repaired in Prescott’s hotel and spent
a few iioiirs in dancing. Our sojourn
j in Valdosta was one of joy and pleas
; lire and the open handed hospitality
| of her generous peop e will her mem
j bered so long as life shall last. At
7 o’clock a. m.. we left on a special
train for Brunswick, teaching that
j beautiful city about noon. Here we
I were quartered at the commodious ho
tel near the depot. After dinner the
! reception committee, headed by May
or Dunn and members of the board
of trade ami city* council, took charge
of the editors and their ladies and ac
companied them in carriages over the
entire city. Brunswick litis a popu
lation of 7,000 souls, she has 40 miles
of deep water front, her big artesian
well flows COO gallons of water per
minute, while her water works are
among the best in the south, the en
gine having a capacity to pump 1,200
gallons of water per minute, with a
reservoir holding near half a million
gallons of as clear water as that of
our camp ground spring. Her fire (h
--partment is complete. She has two
daily papers, the old reliable Adverti
ser-Appeal, owned by Capt. Stacy
& Son, and the Breeze owned by an
other clever gentleman whose name
we do not now recall. Biunswick
has street cars and public parks while
anew hotel is in course of construc
tion, which when completed, will ac
commodate two hundred guests. She
has railroads, steam boats and a shell
road whereon a drive of thirty miles
ran he had. In fact, tne surround
ings of this growing sea-port city
show that her citizens are enterpris
ing and progressive. Thursday eve
ning a grand reception and hall came
off tit the opera house, which was ele
gantly ami elaborately decorated by
the fair women of this fair city by the
sen. Through the kindness of Doctor
and Mrs. F. P. Gale, Mayor Dunn,
Capt. D. T. Boozer and others, we
had the pleasure of meeting many at
tractive and beautiful ladies, and al
though a married man, for lo these
many years, yet wc swung our lovely
paitner and went merrily through the
dance ns in the days of the long ago.
Friday morning early we left in com
pany with near two hundred persons
for Cumberland Island and Fernan
iKna, Fla. Space forbids giving even
a detailed account of this voyage in
tliis issue. Suffice to say, the good
people of Brunswick, like those of
Valdosta, opened wide their homes
and hearts and hid us welcome. On
return to Brunswick a brass hand met
us at the boat. Twenty of our party
went to Jacksonville and other Flor
ida cities, but we returned home Sat
urday, delighted, beyond expression,
with our pleasant journey through
1 this prosperous section of the South.
