(he general as'Cinblv the pres* in this
section have no do ibt overlooked one
of the oldest pinl most useful, hh well
as one of the most popular end rave
ful members of llio house Wt al
lude to lion. J. A. Stewai h of Hie
county of Rockdale, who can always
Ire found nt hi* post of duty and
jvho wields an influence for good in
the halls of legislation. He is be
loved by ell, arid his opinions on
state and other matters are anxiously
sought by old as well as young mem
lrcrs. As chairman of tne Deaf and
Dura Asylum committee lie Ims done
more to make this worthy institution
an honor to the state and beneficial
to unfortunate humanity than any
plan in tfcic legislature. He is second
on the fcDinmittee of Hygiene and
Sanitation and frequently is called to
preside over that most excellent com
wittee, which is composed entirely
of medical men- He is also a mem
Irer of the Educational, the Lunatic ,
Asylum and Railroad committees, all
of which aic large and important.!
“Doctor Stewart." as the “boys’ call (
him. never takes the floor unless du
ty to his state and people demand it,
and when he speaks he receives the j
attention of the house and galleries. I
He is one of the most jovial and so-1
ciable men who ever wore the robe
of office ; in fact, a mo;e obliging or 1
companionable gentleman cannot be j
found anywhere than is the white |
haired patriot from the county of,
Rockdale True to his coiseieDce
he can never prove false to his peo
pie. He is growing old—his life
may be in the sear and yellow leaf,
but the fruits and flowers of a well
iq>ent existence will continue to ripen
and bloom in beauty within his hon
est breast until he is called from the
Stage of all earthly action. A man
who performs his duty and does the
right, as God gives him power to see |
the right will meet with opposition
all along the journey of life, and l)r.
gtewart, being that kind of a man
has met with some opposition in his
political aspirations, but he has
“stood the storm” and retained his
good name through all the varied vi
cissitudes which have beset him for
over forty years of public service
Our readers know Dr. Stewart, for
be came from Morgan to Newton 1
county in 1831. ai which time he was
only 8 years of age. He represent
ed old New ton in the halls of legis
lation time and time again and was
always then, as he is now, a safe and
efficient law maker. When Rock
dale county was created “the Doctor' j
tfrent with hie people, as the saying i
goes, and has done faithful service j
for the new county from the day it
was organized up to the present
hour. At the age of 64 years he is i
hale and hearty and is blessed with
fine health. Best of all, our old and
valued friend is a believer in and fol
lower of the meek and lowly Jesus, :
hi* faith l is founded in the great Mas
ter, and he lives an upright, honest;
life, becoming the Christian man
that he is, aud has been, for many
lODg years. Asa man and a Mason
he is beloved aud honored by all who
know him- Asa surgeon and a phy
sician he stands high in the estima
tion of the medical fraternity. We
might continue this sketch but what
we say would not be news to the peo
ple of Georgia, and we only pen this
article to let a good and true man
know, while yet alive, that his people,
his state and his friends love aud ap
preciate him more and more as the
rears of a well spent life draw near
er to eternity. H.
IMMORAL PICTURES.
Mr. Si Hawkins, editor of the Cov
ington Enterprise, and member of
the House of Representatives from
Newton countv, has introduced a bill
prohibiting the sale of any merchan
dise accompanied by indecent pic
tures. This is in the right direction
and the bill ought to pass. As re
marked by the Macon Telegraph,
?‘thc greed of money has made men
< raflic in the lewd of men’s nature.
Cheap goods are put on the market
with the sole merit (?) that accom
panying them were pictures that by
their lewd nature appealed to the
vigorous imagination of the younger
people.” Lustful pictures a e get
ting vtrv prexalent, and half grown
boys walk rip and down our streets
with their pockets full of them Wp
have known older men, who make
loud professions in favor of moral
reforms, to thumb with e\ ident pleas
ure through a large collection of
these obscene pictures with the
small boys who had collected them
for a pocket museum, and jest and
remark about the suggestions that
force in upon the boys mind under
such circumstances. We know of
nothing more corrupting to the
youthtul mind, and we trust the
Hawkins bill will become a law.—

The recent usual nuns have great
ly damaged Georgia farmers, but
with favorah'e weather from now, all
will yet b well.
Hill Glenn, the young Demosthe
nes of the mountains, has, by his
school bill, engendered considerable
ill will among the darkies of “cul
cliuwed Hosting.” The Boston bean
eating niggers will not prevent the
passage ot William's correct and wise
1 bill, however. For the time lieing
1 the country may be termed as being
moderately wife -t’ai torsvilip Cour
ant American.
Within a few davs tiro Governor
will, if report be true, issue some
sort of an address to the people of
Georgia, but ou just what line, or in
just w hat manner it will be written,
or for what purpose, no one seems to
know. The Governor is non-com
mittal and reticent upon the subject,
and none of the executive officials
; appear to know anything about it,
lu a tew days the matter will doubt
less lie developed.
A tall girl named Short long loved
a big Mr. Little ; while Little, little
thinking of Short, loved a little lass
named Long. To make a long story I
short, Little proposed to Long, and I
Short longed to be even with Little’s :
little short-comings. So, Short, meet- J
ing Long, threatened tonim ry Little
before long, which caused Little in
a short time to marry Long. Querry:
Did tall Short love big Ii tie less,
because Little loved Long?
The New York Democratic State
Convention meetsat Saratoga August
30th. The election wi 1 be an off one
that is for the State House officials
and not for Governor. Notwith j
standing the talk of dissatisfaction j
with the administration of President
Cleveland and the threats of dissen !
siou in the party the indications are
that theie will be a harmonious con
vention and that the administrations
of President Cleveland and Governor
Hill will be endorsed.
A syndicate of New York and Pitts
burg capitalists have just closed a
transaction, by which they become
owners of nearly 100,000 acres of the
finest pine forests in the South. The
lauds are along the Northern line of
South Carolina and Georgia, most of
it being in the latter State. The price
paid was £1,000,000 in rash. The
deal was made through a prominent
! real estate firm of Pittsburg. The
1 intention of the purchasers is not to
develop the lands, but to hold tlieni
as an investment until an advance in
the price of lumber greadly increases
their value.
Mr. Henry Grady, and Senator
Colquitt, called upon President
Cleveland, last week at Washington,
and Mr. Grady bore to the president
the formal invitation of the Pied
mont Exposition company. It is an
uni jue and striking piece of work,
made of four leaves of Georgiagold,
about the size of a 12 mo book,
bound with clasps of Georgia silver,
and each clasp set with a Geotgia
diamond. The invitation is enclosed
in a box inlaid with 6S samples of
Georgia wood, polished and joined
with exceeding skill- The box is
j imbedded in a block of Georgia mar
! ble of every shade from black to
j white. On the cover leaf of the in
] vitation are engraved [lie portraits of
the president, and Mrs. Cleveland,
the monogram of the Piedmont ex
position, and a picture of the club
house of the Piedmont Driving club,
jOn the second leaf is the invitation
j cut into gold. On the third page is
| the invitation of the Driving Club.
|On the fourth or last cover pago is
engraved a picture of the main build
! ing of the Piedmont exposition. In
| presenting the invitation, Mr. Grady
made no formal address, but stated
: that it was designed to make it in
some sense significant of the resour
j ces of Georgia, in whose capital city
j the first exposition of the famous
| Piedmont country will be held.
