DEATH OK LITTLE TORRENCE
%
It is with pain ami sorrow that we
announce the death of little Torrence,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry I Hor
ton, which will event transpired at
their home in this city on Thursday
lust. Aged about 7 years. The sym
pathies of our entire people go out
to the bereaved parents in the unfor
tunutc hours of their great misfor
tune. Torrence was u bright and in
teresting child and a favorite with all
who knew him. May he sleep sweet- j
ly, and may the good Lord give his
sorrowing parents strength to say. 1
“Thy will and not mine Ik- done," for •
their darling hoy is now free from the
cures, pains and responsibilities of this
cold and careless world and is safe in ,
the blessed urins of our Lord and (Sa
viour, Jesus ('hrist. The funeral ser- j
vices were conducted in a very ini-!
pressive manner by Rev. It. J. Big-1
bam and Rev. J. M. Brittain, Friday |
afternoon, at the M. E. Church.
THE METHODIST CHURCH.
On Sunday 26th, at 11 a. m., Rev.
R. J Bigham, Pastor of the Coving
ton Methodist Church, preached a
most powerful and instructive sermon
to a large and attentive congregation.
After the sermon he called for about
8550.00—balance due and necessary
to complete the Parsonage. The con
gregation and Church promptly re
sponded—B429.so being raised then
and there ; since which time the com
mittee having raised from members
absent almost enough money to pay
off the entire amount; however, there
will be no difficulty whatever in rais
ing the amount called for. The condi
tion of this charge is most flattering
Its membership heartily responds to
the leadership of its beloved Pastor
and are ready to follow up last years
great prosperity with a still (letter
success. The converts of the past
year are in a most gratifying condi
tion. The ordinances of the church
are beautifully and generally observ
ed : its institutions loyally and gladly
supported and its services regularly
and lurgely attended. The Young
Men’s Prayer Meeting (organized du
ring the meeting of last fall) is one of
marked power. Every service is a
gracious one ; from 50 to 75 attend
ing. The Thursday night prayer
meeting is more prosperous than it
has ever been. Indeed the Church
is, perhaps, in every direction far in
advance of what it lias ever been Ik*-
fore. This is good news —grand and
glorious news.
THE MALE ACADEMY.
Our people are not as anxious for |
a male school here as we had at one
time supposed. The young man who
opened wide the doors of the Acade
my a few mornings since was reward
ed by having two small boys to put in
their appearance. Time rolled on and
the attendance‘did not increase, so on
the third morning the Professor and j
his entire school celebrated the fir.-t
of April a month in advance and took
holiday for the balance of the season.
As there is some valuable furniture
within the classic walls of this educa
tional edifice, in fact much more than
can be successfully utilized for school
purposes, we rather favor the sale of
at least half of it. We have investi
gated this matter and find that there
are four second hand chairs and four
rickety desks, besides a pair of curi
rious looking things, which if painted
over, might he used for black boards.
Let half of this furniture ho quickly
pushed to sale, and let the proceeds
go toward that 810,000 brick hotel
which we talk so much about, and in
all probability, which will never l-e
erected until we build up a thorough
and systematic system of schools in
this community —male as well as fe
male. If we have anew hotel it
will he constructed for use, and not
like our academy and machine shops,
for ornament only. We should do a
little more solid work and not waste
so much valuable time in gas and bun
combe. We have a few old wind
bags that are always blowing with
their mouths and never do any mate
rial good with their money. Such
men impede instead of advance pro
gressive measures and public enter
prises. Let us be up and doing. We
have the best town and county in the
.State and let us put our shoulders to
the. wheel and utilize the natural re
sources with which we are blessed.
