CAPTAIN JAMES M. PACE.
A primary election will he held in
this county on Saturday, August 4th,
to nominate a candidate for the legis
lature. We urge and will advoeate
Captain James M. Pace for the nomi
nation because we believe he is tb •
right man to represent Newton coun
ty in the legislature at this time. Np
one, for a moment, doubts or ques
tions his uldiity to fill tho position
with credit to himself uml honor to
the county. lie is a gentleman of
fine address, is courteous and compan
ionable and |sissesses merit of n very
high order. He is social, kind, geni
al and generous, and his steudfast and
unselfish devotion to the Democratic
party should bo remembered at the
approaching election. The Enterprise
declines to draw comparisons between
the honorable gentlemen who are can
didates for the general assembly, but
it does claim the privilege and will
exercise the right to s|>eak a word for
so true and deserving a man as Capt.
Pace has proven himself to be in ev
ery walk and every relation of life,
and more especially will it do this
when it brings to mind the pleasant
fact that he has been a liberal patron
of the paper from its first issue and a
warm, substantial friend to the writer
for more than quarter of a century.
This is no time for any friend of eith
er candidate to lie lukewarm or in
different, but it is a time for the voice
of the Democratic party to be heard,
aud when heard it will certainly he
heeded by this editor and this paper.
We will support the nominee of the
primary election and do it pleasantly
and enthusiastically, without money
and without pi ice—-without reward or
the hope thereof, but until the prima
ry we shall insist that Captain Pace
possesses every qualification to make
a safe, prudent and efficient represen
tative, any we repeat what we have
said before, that old Newton would
honor herself by sending him to the
legislature, or bestowing upon him
any office within her gift.
DEATH’S SAD ROLL.
Col. 13. \Y’. Frohell, vice-president
of the Covington & Macon railroad,
died in Monticello, one day last week.
A live, progressive man has been call
ed home. He leaves this world full
of years and full of honors.
Mr. Alva A. O'Kelly, so well and
favorably known here, died of fever
in Little Rock, Ark., several days
since. His remains were brought
home and intered in the family ceme
tey near YY’alnut Grove. To the grief
stricken mother und re.ativcs we ten
der our sympathy. He was a young
man of honor and integrity. May he
sleep sweetly. Only a few months i
ago he left Covington in the best of
health and with bright prospect be
fore him, and in the bloom of a prom
ising young manhood lie is cut down.
Truly, “in the nijdst of life we are
iu death.”
Mrs. Sarah E. Means, an aged and
honored lady, died at her home iu
Oxford on Saturday morning last.—
Aged about 30 years —perhaps 85 yrs.
She was the wife of ihe late venera
ble Dr. Alexander Means, and a bet
ter, kindes-hearted lady never lived or
died then was she. The long years
of her existence was devoted to mak
ing those around her happy. For
some time past she has been in feeble
healtli and her death was not entirely
unexpected. Her life of Christian
benevolence and sweet charity is as
a rich legacy to those she leaves be
hind. Let not the dear ones of her
earthly household mourn as those
without hope, for this pure and noble
woman had so lived that she knew
full well before she died that a crown
of righteousness was laid up for her
iu Heaven. Sleep sweetly, sainted
Mother in Israel, for thou art now far
beyond the pain, strife and care of
this world, and are safe at home in
thy Father’s house, where rest, peace
and joy will be thine throughout all
eternity.

WISE AND OTHERWISE.
On July 4 Mrs. John F. Glenn left
her husband and father’s family in
Newton county und went to Macon
and boarded at the Southern hotel
until Wednesday morning, when she
left there aud went to the home of a
Mr. and Mrs. Hester, who live near
Beasley's crossing, and both of whom
had formerly lived in Newton, near
Mrs. (Renn, and was known well hy
her. Mrs. Glenn says she left her
husband uml other relatives tiecauso
of their severe and continued cruel
treatment, and she could not Im in
duced, under any circumstances to go
back to them. Her relatives took le
gal steps Friday to compel her to re
turn hut did not succeed. We get
this information from tho Atlanta
Constitution.
The time lias arrived in thu history
of Newton county und Covington to
better their condition materially hy
taking $25,000 in stock in the Cov
ington A Macon railroad and giving
tiie right of way und a depot site to
the company. If this is done work
will be commenced in thirty days. If
our people ever expect to ilo anything
now is the time, for an opportunity
like this comes to a county but once
in a lifetime, and frequently not so
often Be up and moving and let
everybody strain a point to take stock
in this enterprise. It is useless to re
mind our people that if this road is
extended westward by any other place
near here that it will injure Coving
ton seriously. If the road is brought
here uew life will lie instilled into
the dear old county and town. Let
all our citizens put their shoulders to
the wheel and see that nothing is left
undone, which if done, would secure
the extention of the road here.

were not due until the road was fin

your enterprise depends upon your

OPPORTUNITY.
! Io Get the Covington and Ma
con Railroad.
i
1 From Tho Covington Star, 17th.]
laud week we received a letter from
Major J. U. Key, of Montloallo, one of
the directors of the Covington ami Ma
con railroad, in which lie proponed that
if the peop'e of Covington uml Newton
comity would secure the right of way
for thu ('. .<i M. rood through tho county
and the city, give them a site for a de
pot, and sulmcribe $25,1100 to tl.e capital
stock of tiie company, the road would
lie extended to Covington witiiin the
next lour mouths. A meeting of our
citllens wus called at once to take ac
tion in the matter, and tho proposition
was duly considered. The meeting au
thorized timt :l\e letter be replied to,
ami that Major Key he assured of the
earnest desire of our people to have the ;
road completed to Covington at as early |
a day as possible. It was also suggested
I lint Major Key lie requested to have the
proposition pul in official shape, so w e
could act upon it intelligently, und in a
business way.
Tliis w as done, and Major Key prompt
ly replied Hint the proposition was all
right ; that lie is in perfect accord w ith
the board and the contractor; that tl
the terms are complied with, work will
be commenced ill 30 days, uml tlxo road
completed to Covington witiiin the nexi
four months.
Immediately upon tlie receipt of Ma
jot lvcy’s ruply, another public meeting
of ourcilisetis was culled at the court
house, wnieh was largely attended by
the people from the country. It was
unanimously agreed that the building of
tiie road to Covington had now become
an absolute necessity, and that the peo
ple of every section of our county ought
to aid in tiie work of luring the $25,000
subscription.
Upon motion, subscription commit
ices were appointed for each militia dis
trict in the comity, and every one was
urged to press tiie m liter of raising the
n <purer! amount with vigor, in order
tba( the subscription maybe presented
to the company and the work commenc
ed itt as early a day as possible.
Tliis seems to us to be the supreme
opportunity ior tiie people of Covington
and Newlon cornty toget tliis road built
to tliis point. It needs no argument
from us to convince our people that tiie
necessity far prompt action is now upon
us. We can get the road by complying
with the terms proposed by Major Key.
We cannot expect to get a railroad, from
any direction, upon easier terms than
'here- lad us raise the subscription.

ITEMS FROM PULLTIGHT.
There is a fine little boy stopping
at the home of Mr. aud Mrs. W. J.
Fincher.
There is plenty of rain falling this
year to keep crops moving and grass
enough to keep farmers doing the
same.
Why are some girls so hard-heart
ed ? It makes us sad to look ott the
forlorn features of a certain Newton
Factory gent, hut we advise him to
step over to C. N. next Sunday.
The mammoth merchants of Pull
tight are doing a thriving business
and have prospects of a live trade in
the near future. We ought to have
a post office hero.
Checker playing has become the
favorite pass-time at Tugorstown. T.
J. sits in the front yard, like deputy
sheriff Carroll before the courthouse,
with his board and chairs to banter
the boys as they pass by. Tom is
hard to beat, and so is Carroll.
Mr. Ackey Polk is, no doubt, the
oldest man in this county. He is 8!)
years of age, but lias liecn confined
to a bed of sickness since May 188(1.
He has been one of Newton’s most
successful farmers, having always en
deavored to make all his supplies at
home.
. Hurrah for a certain dude ot New
ton Factory. The boys of Pulltight,
as that gent was pleased to term it,
will have to stand back, for they can
have no chance with the girls while
lie is around. And yet, it appears as
if none of beauties can catch the
“pink.”
