Dr. J. A. Wright has been confin

\Y i* hope he will soon be up again.
Look at the fine goods on the bar

Thompson when you visit Covington.
('apt. J’acc is courteous and polite,
has a clear head and a warm heart
and is one of the ablest debaters in
the state of Georgia.
A pleasant sociable came off at the
residence of Captain and Mrs. ,1. E.
McConnell, in Brick Btore district,
one evening last week.
Flether Nelson, colored, who lives
near town, has about twenty acres of
as line new ground corn as we ever
saw in the county.
Mr. Win. Maddox, of Brewer’s dis
trict, has a bouncing baby boy at bis
home. May life for friend William,
his good wife and darling child be
long and prosperous.
Let every man who votes in the
primary on August 4th make up bis
mind to support the nominee freely
and enthusiastically. This is democ
racy, and besides, it is right.
A wife will hardly ever notice that
her husband has had his hair cut, but
let him go promenading around the
house with a strange hairpin sticking
in his coat and explanations are then
and there in order.
One week from Saturday the pri
mary election will come off to nomi
nate a democratic candidate for the
legislature. It appears to us that
; upturn James M. Pace is the right
man at this time for the place.
The prayer meeting services here
last Sunday were well attended and
greatly enjoyed. Let every old and
young man in the community attend
the 8 o’clock meeting at the Baptist
church next Sunday morning and tlie
service at the Methodist church at 5
o’clock in the afternoon.
The ladies of the Baptist church
will give an ice cream festival will be
given at the female college Friday
eve, 28th. The proceeds will lie de
voie 1 to the purchase of pulpit furni
ture for the Baptist church. Let
everybody be sure to patronize the
festival.
Rev. R. J. Bigharn preached ;>n in
teresting and beautiful sermon at the
Method : st church Sunday morning.
It was full of comfort for tho present
and lull of hope for the future. It
was his farewell sermon to his people
and touched a tender chord in every
heart.

The managers of the primary elec
tion, on August 4th, will bear in mind
that the lists of voters at the various
precincts will be brought to town on
Monday morning. Gth, so as to have
them on hand when the returns are
consolidated and the result declared.
This is important and must not he
overlooked or neglected.
He who is too politic to aid ami as
•sist a friend when that friend is in
need of assistance, either in worldly
or spiritual things, in personal or po
liteial affairs, has no right whatever to
expect aid and eneouragment from a
friend should he ever stand in need of
such. We have about come to the
conclusion that
“He who hath plenty of spondulix
And lendeth his poor neighbor none,
Ought not to he loaned any spondulix
When all of his spondulix h gone.”
On Monday last, July 23, the fol
lowing letters remained uncalled for
in the post office at Covington, Geor
gia : In calling for any of these
letters say to the Postmaster that they
have been advertised in the Enterprise
and have one cent ready to pay for
each letter, as this is now the law: —
Ladies. —Jennie Colt, Leila Gay,

Let the friends of Cupt. Pace, who
insisted on his making the race lor
the legislature, go to work and secure
the nomination for him. He entered
the field at the earnest and urgest so
licitation of solid citizens from every
section of the county. We advocate
his nomination because we know he
is competent and will well and faith
fully represent this county in the gen
eral' assembly. He is a fluent speak
er, an able debater and a clear-head
oil, warm-hearted, generous man, who
has ever loved his people and his par
ty and loves them better to-day (if
such could be possible) than he ever
did before, and meets you face to face
and for the first time solicits your
votes— asking an honor at your hands.
Remember bis useful services in the
past and a,k yourself the question,
“Is it the part of wiishm' to repudiate
him now ?” We think not

General McGruJcr Into the finest

up north, will lie glad to know that
his health is fine ami his future bright.
The General's name used to be It. W.
Ihighy until Dr. J. C. Anderson con
cluded to change it to MeGruder. —
This changing of a clever man’s mime
is nothing new in this community, as
a patent medicine vendor once took
tlie liberty of changing the name of
Uncle Davie Roberts to that of Col.
Mathew Met raekin. And again, we
declined to accept a twenty dollar ad
vertisement for two dollars, from an
agent to tie taken in liver pills, and
by so doing had our name immediate
ly changed from Haw kins to that oi
One Gulins Galoot.
Rev. R. J. Bigham, who has been
Pastor of the Methodist church in
Covington for two and a half years,
has been appointed Presiding Elder
of the Rome district and will enter
actively at work in his new field at
once. This is a high and deserved
compliment to one of the ablest and
most brilliant young ministers in the
Methodist ministry. Elder Bigham
leaves Covington with every citizen

ple love him, his good wife and sweet
little daughter. May the Master lie
with them and bless them all along
the journey of life and finally take
them to His mansion in the skies.—
Rev. Lutidy Harris, of Decatur, will

his church hold up his hands that he
may Ifb enabled to perform his labors
well and faithfully with a light and
happy heart—with the comforting as
surance that his valuable services are
fully appreciated. May the Lord
bless him who comes and him who goes
The re union of the 42ml Georgia
regiment at Monroe, Friday last, was
a grand and glorious success. There
were several thousand people in atten
dance, every one of whom was made
to feel a welcome gaest at home. The
speeches were eloquent and patriotic.
Newton county was ably represented
by a large delegation of old soldiers
and citizens. Owing l 1 the immense
crowd who depended on dinner from
the public tables it was our good pleas-
ure, in company with a dozen or more
gentlemen, to dine at the elegant und
hospitable home of Colonel Saudeis
Walker, one of Walton county’s best,
truest and most honored sons. We
enjoyed the tine repast ‘ever so much’
and did full justice to the choice bill
of fare, especially did we pay court
to the barbecue meats, the vegetables,
home made breads, Jersey milk from
a 8400 cow, desert, etc. Sanders has
a most charming life companion and
a happy, healthy and interesting fain
ily. While we had an enjoyable time
mingling with the multitudes the few
hours spent beneath the roof of our
friend will be remembered ns the most
delightful part of our visit to Monroe.
Long may he live ami happy ever be.
Col. E. S. Steadman, of tho Litho
nia New Era, is a young man of fine
judgment. Ho says; “The legisla
tive race in Newton is growing in
teresting. We know that every coun
ty is capable of choosing its own rep
resentatives, but as we claim Newton
as our old home we feel justified in
saying that Captain J. M. Pace is the
very iiinn for this high and responsi
ble position, and it would reflect hon
or on the county to have him in the
next House. We have known Capt.
Pace all our life, and it gives us great
pleasure to hear testimony to his solid
worth and high integrity. A better,
or more social man never lived, ami
his party fealty and deep devotion to
pure democratic principles has never
yet been questioned. lie is compe
tent to discharge this trust and we be
lieve his people will give it to him by
a handsome majority. Newton coun
ty cannot well afford to withhold the
nomination from her worthyand hon
orable son at this time. The state is
sorely in need of the services of such
men in her legislative halls.”
Hon. C. B. Kilgore, a native Geor
gian, formerly from Newton county,
but now a member of Congress from
Texas, created a little excitement in
the house of representative the other
day. The Washington correspondent
of the Atlanta Constitution tolls us
that his objection to the bill to pro
vide aid for state homes for disabled
soldiers and sailors caused quite a
scene. Mr. Kilgore pronounced the
bill a scheme to rob the laboring men ;
when Mr, Spinola, a very old and do
crepid member from New York, re
plied that he “would hurl the decla
ration back into the dirty throat from
which it emanated.” Mr. Kilgore
j replied by stating that he would take
into consideration the age of the gen
tleman who had just uttered the in
sulting language, but if any oik: of
his henchmen had given utterance to
the words he would denounce him on
the floor ns n liar. For a time tilings
looked quite breezy, but- as none of
Mr. Spinola’s young friends would
father his remarks, he withdrew his
Utterance against the Texan and or
der was restored. Had it not been
for the age of Mr. Spinola the house!
would have been treated to an unpre- i
cedented scene. •
