Here and There
Politically, religiously, morally and
socially Covington bus not an equal
in any town of its size in Georgia.
Of coutse we have some wicked peo
ple among us, but they are few mid
far between, mid none are not so bail
but wlmt they may yet he reclaimed.
The addition to the Baptist church
adds greatly to the convenience and
appearance of the interior of the
building. Our Baptist friends are to
be congratulated for their liberality in
putting their house in such good or
der und placing new pulpit furniture
therein. May all our churches go on
prospering and to prosper.
We earnestly urge all of our citi
zens, who have girls and y..uug ladies
to educate, to patronise the female
college here, for it is worthy their
support. Many parents and guar
dians from abroad send their daugh
ters and wards here to be educated be
cause we have a model school, and
this of itself should stimulate our own
citizens to build up and give the col
lege a healthy patronage.
The ice cream and fruit festival,
given by some of the ladies of the
Baptist enure!), at the college Friday
night, was well patronized by the good
people in this community. The social
feature of the evening was delight
fully pleasant and will long be re
membered hv all who were so fortu
nate as to be present. The recitations
by i 01. Emmett Womack were ap
preciated aud enjoyed. Let the la
dies give another festival and let ev
erybody attend.
When nil the list.- of the register
ed voters arc returned to the County
Commissioners there will probably be
a committee of c'tizens who will go
through the books and if any illegal
voters have registered a rule will be
issued against them, and if proof can
he had that they are illegal voters,
their names will he eracod from the
registration books and their names
handed over so the next grand jury
for prosecution. If this law is rigid
ly enforced illegal voting will be an
impossibility in this county.
It gives us pain to chronicle the
<1 ath of Mr Jno P Upshaw, an aged
and honored citizen of Walton conn
tv, which end event transpired at his
home near S >cia! Circle, one day last
week, lie was the father of Col. W.
8. Upshaw, of Covington. lie was
a useful mail —a man of high integ
rity and a man who will he missed by
his county and his people. He leaves
friends and loved ones all over the
state to mourn his departure and la
ment his demise. May flowers of
beauty ever bloom upon his grave.
• On the evening of the 25th in com
pany with Mr. and Mrs I’. J. Bigharo
it was the happy privilege of our edi
tor and his wife to take supper and
spend several hoyrs at the hospitable
home of Major and Mrs. Jno. B. Da
vis. That the entire party had a de
' lightful time and enjoyed an elegant
supper, goes “without saying.” Our
friends understand the art of enter
taining and have a home where peace
and enjoyment can always be found.
May life for this family he long and
exceedingly prosperous.
Anew survey will be made from
this point to near Eudora with a view
of getting the Covington & Macon
railroad extended to this place. A
pleasant and harmonious conference
was recently held between a commit
tee of our representative citizens and
Major Key and Colonel Macheu, and
the outlook is promising for (he road
to be brought here. Let old Newton
put her shoulder to the wheel anil se
cure this extension, for if we reject
the liberal proposition made it will
probably be the last and best oppor
tunity we will ever have to get this
much needed line.
FROM I’ULL-TIGIIT.
Messrs. Jack and Henry Kitchens,
of Alabama, are on a visit to their
father, Major Joel Kitchens.
Mr. Lovic McLaughlin has a rous

Mr. Jack Harwell came near losing

We have a flourishing Sabbath

We learn that Mr. Burrell Morris
will commence work on Allen s bridge
at once and in a short time tlio pub
lie will be able to cross the river and
not have to “shell out” 25 cents a
head for the privilege.
Mr Thomas Maddox got 32 blue

recently. He was so excited he came
near falling out of the boat carrying
the basket with him. It was his hrst

the boys to beat him playing marbles.

WISE AND OTHERWISE.
The Conyers Weekly says: “The
Covington papers arc making an earn
est light in behulf of Capt. Pace. In
point of fact Georgia has few if any
superiors to Capt. Paco, lie is one
man of whom tlio people should Is'
proud. He is pure, honest, clean,
manly mid scholarly, and would fill
any office in the gift of any people
with ability, honor mid distinction.”
The primary election, to come off
Saturday, is a family affair to lo set
tled by the democratic brotherhood
of Newton county, and the man who
secures the nom nation may feel as
sured that nothing will lie left undone
to elect him in October. This paper
will stand by the nominee, whether he
he Pace or Speer. Let us have an
earnest, but a peaceful, good-natured
election. Let no wounds he made,
hut let the friends of both candidates
insist on a fair, square, clean liallot.
Once again wejnsist that the city
of Covington enforce the vagrant law,
and when tramps come around the
premises of our citizens the fact
should lie reported to the Marshal,
Some of our streets are in a deplora
ble condition and work could tu once
lie given idlers who have no visible
means of support. Healthy tramps
have no right to demand a living
from the working people by begging
from door to door, and doubtless
steeling whatever they can lay their
hands on. This is one law which can
and should be enforced.
lion. John I). Stewart, our most
worthy representative in Congress,
wilt lie opposed by Col. George S.
Thomas, who is a prominent repuhli
can now practicing law in Atlanta,
lie says that lie will canvas the dis
trict thoroughly and make speeches
in every county. He will also invite
Judge Stewart to meet him in joint
debate. Of course there is hardly a
possibility of his election. We pre
sume he is making the race for the
fun of the thing and what little cheap
notoriety falls to the lot of those who
offer for office when every chance is
against them. It will give us pleas
ure to see Col. Thomas sit down on
very hard next November.
While in the legislature we had a
few local laws enacted for this county.
Our authority to do this came from
grand juries and from the people, and
we have no further explanations to
make. If a majority of the voters
of the county had demanded any oth
er local laws they would have been
enacted. We were elected to serve
Newton county and did it to the best
of our ability and if any burdensome
laws were fastened upon the people
let the next representative have the
courage to repeal them, and if any
new laws are desired let him have the
manhood to pass them regardless of
any personal prejudice, without fear,
favor or affection for any individual
or from any small faction.
The Albany News tells us that the
bagging trust has played the mischief
with the prices of bagging for this
season. Bagging is now worth 3
cents per yard more than it was last
season, all brought about through the
trust made possible by the protective
policy of the Government. The Far
mers’ Alliance can do a noble work
for the farmers of the South, by inau
gurating a different method of wrap
ping cotton bales. A coarse cotton
cloth would prove a beautiful solution
of the whole question. It would prove
a better protection to the cotton, and
would be much cheaper, while it
would reduce the cotton crop fully
100,000 bales. Innovations are re
ceived slowly, but this suggestion
seems to have so many claims upon
the consideration of planters that it
ought to meet with favor at once. —
Our farmers must organize for pro
tection against organized capital, else
they will continue to pay the penalty
of their weakness —a tax on their toil
to enrich those whose greed is with
out, measure.
