On Monday last, May 13. the fid

The republican administration is
dishing out the spoils with n rapidity
kin to greased lightning. “The ras
cals,” of the white persuasion, are be
ing “turned in” all along the line and
there is great rejoicing in the radical
camp. Captain J. M. Levy, post
master of Covington, has been retuov
ed and Mr. P. 11. Ferguson appoint
ed to fill the vacancy. “Put” will do
all in his power to please the people,
and will retain Captain Levy as “first

feel good all over when we remember
that “to-day is not always, and to
morrow is not forever.” In the sweet

A pleasant, barbecue came off near
Cedar Shoals, on Friday. About 25
gentlemen were present. Everything
was condu'ted in the best of style
and everybody appeared to enjoy the
occasion to their heart’s content. So
cial gatherings like this force men to
entertain a more brotherly feeling to
ward each other, and makes this life,
with all its trials and responsibilities,
more that worth the living. In or
der to appreciate each other we must
become acquainted and mix and mig
gle -together and lie social and polite.
No trouble, pains or expense was
spared to make this affair full and
comp ete in every particular. Shout,
kid, lamb, chicken, sauces, chacker
biscuit, bread, pickle, coffee, lemon
ade, etc., etc., was served in lavish
abundance. The meats were all well
done, thoroughly seasoned and cook
ed to a brown turn, the same being in
charge ami under the supervision of j
Capt. Samuel Me art, assisted by the j
well known colored caterer, Harrison
Clark. “The hoys” were determined j
to have one day of feast, fun and
frolic—they had it.
Covington had the show of shows j
one night recently. The dancing was |
well done, the acting inferior and farj
below the average, the receipts of the j
evening amounted to the enormous
sum of $4.25. There were no ladies j
in the audience, but the gentlemen
present conducted themselves in an
orderly manner, remaining quiet at
least 1 -20th of the time. We give a
brief sketch of one act: Lover tel
ephoning to the other world in search
of his sweet heart’s dead father, final
ly locating him on the summit of pur-1
gutory. “What is he doing there?” i
sobbed the trembling girl. “Shuffling
coal with a red hot pitchfork on the.
republicans in the blueing pit below,” |
came the ready answer. “Are there
no democrats there?” asked the girl.
“None, except your father, who, in
.life, was not shrewd enough to.hold
his hand with “the rascals,” but in
death lie’s making it warm for the
many here, and has material enough
on hand to make it lively for the tens
of thousands yet to follow.” “I knew
pa was doing his duty,” said the girl,
j Curtain drops, the play is ended and
I the show for the time being is ‘busted’.
