It gratifies us to learn that our peo
pie are well pleased with the way in
which Professor W. Frank Smith has
■milt up our Male Academy That
he would be the right man in the
right place as superintendent of our
Public Schools is a fact which few, if
any, wi I deny. If it is decided not
to elect a general superintendent, hut
let evt-rv school have its own teachers,
then we suggest that Prof. Smith be
placed at the head of the largest de
partment, or school, to he operated
under the provisions of our public
school hill. Asa diciplimirian, as an
educator and as a cultured, compan
ionable gentleman he is beloved by
pupils and patrons and highly esteem
ed hv our people. He possesses ev
ery qualification of Blind ami heart
to successfully fill the highest position
within the gift of our school hoard.
This is a deserved tribute to worth
and merit, and not an idle empty
compliment.
We have never solicited advertise
ments from abroad from houses that
competed with our owu merchants,
but unless our business men feel dis
posed to invite trade here, we will lie
compelled to seek a litt e patronage
from the wide awake merchants and
business men in other sections of the
State. Gentlemen, talk up your bus
iness through our columns. It will
pay you and show the outside world
that there is no better point in Geor
gia to sell cotton and purchase go-xls
than right here in Covington. We
know, and you know, that standard
groceries and handsome goods can be
bought here cheaper than in other
towns larger than ours. Let this be
known far and wife and we will not
have to depend upon a small teritory
for our trade —we will secure patron
age from all sections. Patronize us
and we will double the size of our pa
per if necessary. We love this gram
old county far better than any other
spot beneath the stars and will always
rejoice at her prosperity and mourn
should misfortune ever befall her.

SUNDAY SCHOOL PrCNIC. j
Friday last the Covington Metho-.
•list Sunday School went on a picnic
to Porter Spriug, near Hemy Shoals,
■ll Yellow river. There were about
.'OO person* present, most of whom
,-cre children und young men and la
ie —not more than a dozen married
tiples being on Imud. Everything ,
sued off pleusuntly and haim-ini |
indy und not an acchient or a mis- ,
liup occurred during the day.
Fishing, promenading, gathering
fetus and wild flowers, swinging in
hammocks, boat riding aud other in
noeent amusements were indulged in,
hut no long-w'mled orations were on;
lltr program. Careful and tender at-1
trillion was given the cbiidern, who
conducted themselves weM from the
beginning to the close of the day’s;
festivities It was nil occasion of true
enjoyment and uninterrupted mirth
At I o’clock cloths were spread lie 1
uenth the shade of many trees near
the spring and everybody was invited
to c-onie forth nml purtake freely of
the ls.u..tiful feast which hud been
prepare I for the occasion. After an
appropriate blessing, by Rev. Mr.
D.i dap, formality was waived and all
proceed and to do justice to the tempt
ing food in ai-corikincc with tbeir own
wishes. It was such a spread as only
the ladii of Covington, Midway and
Oxford can get up when they join
baiiils and put their wise heads and
lunch ikisai-Is together
t he afternoon was spent ulsiut like
the m -ruing. Amusing incidents oc
curred at table and on the grounds.
A gallant Iwutix bud a plate of (lain
ties for bis “treasure” and sit it down
ill order to see where said “treasure”
hud gone. He noticed her sitting in
bis buggy eating chicken salad with a
j fellow who came out in a two horse
| wagon with a delegation of ‘stags’—
Imtli were using the same fork. Green
with envy lie reached for his place
1 it was gone. Let him not despair, for
"How seldom do our dreams come true
The very thing our fancy lets
Us hope in time will lie our own
Some other fellow always gets.
We fall in love; the mind’s diseased,
The brain is in a foolish whirl;
And while we worship from afar
Some other fellow gets the girl.
We try for wealth —deluded fools!
As all from Adam’s time have done
And while we toil and strive and fret,
Some other fellow yanks the bun.
We yearn for fame, and struggle hard
To win some measure of renown.
And find th it to posterity
An other fellow’s name goes down.
Ah! what a torment life would be
II we were of the hope bereft
That in some fairer world than this
That other fellow would get left.”
The picnic was a success in every
par tit ular. Messrs. John Echols, J.
N. W oodruff and Jno. F. Hender
son tendered their wagons, mules and
drivers to the school “without money
and with mt price,” which kind act
was appreciated. Superintendent J.
G. Lester has the thanks of all who
were present for his untiring efforts
to make the occasion one of the roost
pleasant affairs of the kind that ever
came off in the county.
We have been keeping quiet about
a manufactory that was about to lie
established here. Tax Collector Da
vis concluded that if a hand made,
double-hack, white oak split fish has
ket could be suddenly run on the
market, at the low price of 50 cents,
that such a manufactory would fill a
long-felt want. He got the white oak
and sought a secluded spot in the
shade and proceeded to construct a
sample basket. For four days he la
bored earnestly, working the skin off
his hands and tearing several of the
commandments all to peices. On the
fifth day lie completed the work and
announced that he was firmly of the
opinion that he was not a suitable per
son to superintend a hand-made fish
basket manufactory.
Newton county has cause to be ex
ceedingly proud of many of her young
men. We know, and you know, a
score of young men who, unaided and
alone, have driven want and poverty
from their door and are now in inde
pendent circumstances. These men,
as u rule, are sober and moral, who
fear the Lord and observe His Com
mandments. What they have accom
plished others can accomplish. We
glory in the prosperity of all good
people and see nothing to prevent any
worthy young man or woman, who is
not ashamed of honest work, from be
ing happy and above absolute want.
Give the young folks a chance and
ten to one they will make something
of themselves and for themselves.
