Oak Hill will hold its annual Sun
day School Celebration and basket
dinner on Thursday, July 4th, 1889.
Gov. John Is. Gordon and Col. \V,
W. Lumpkin will address the people
before dinner, and Hon. L. L. Mi.l
dlebrook will deliver the afternoon
oration. Everybody cordially invited
to be present. All are requested to
bring well filled baskets. The peo
ple of Cora and Oak Ilill district will
extend a generous welcome to each
and every visitor.
We get this personal from the At
lanta Constitution : “Judge Munson
Glass and wife, prominent citizens of
Newton county, are visiting their
daughter, Mrs. J. E. Murphy, in
Gainsville. The Judge, though near
ly an octogenarian, is remarkably well
preserved and sprightly, ns is Mrs.
Glass, who is not many years his
junior.” This aiso from the Consti
tution : “Miss Maggie Allen, one of
the most accomplished young ladies
of Covington, has been visiting the
city during the week.” Then comes
the Jessup Sentinel with this item :
“Si Hawkins was taken for Sam
Small in St. Louis, and was asked to
lead in singing; but when they hand
ed Si a Dutch hymn book, it floored
him. He was not Dutehie enough to
tackle it.”
The commencement exercises of the
Georgia Methodist Female College
opened Sunday with a captivating sc-r
lriou from Rev. C. A. Evans, of Au
gusta. At night Dr. Boring, one of
the oldest Methodist ministers in the
south or union, gave a short talk
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
was devoted to the usual matters in
cident upon such occasions. The pu
pils all did well in their recitations,
compositions, etc. The addresses de
livered were eloquent and appropri
ate. It is not convenient to deal in
individual compliment, and besides,
we go to press before all the exercises
are over, and if anything of a special
or very interesting nature transpires,
the same will be fully reported in
our next issue. We hope that pupils
aud teachers will have a delightful
time during vacation, and that our
schools and college will he liberally
patronized w hen the fall term begins.
Sunday last, June 16th, a family
re-union and dining came off’ at the
hospitable home of Mrs. Newton An
derson, in this city. The gathering
of loved ones was to commemmorate
and celebrate the 70th anniversary
of this gentle lady. For three score
years and ten this old world has been
made better by Mrs. Anderson having
lived in it. She is and has ever been
a kind, generous, charitable woman,
devoting her time nml labors in pro
moting the happiness of others. For
years and years she has been a consis
tent member of the Baptist church—
has lived according to the teachings
of the holy scriptures —being at all
times confident that when she is call
ed from this world that it will be to
a home of joy and peace in that better
world beyond the stars May the
Master continue to bless this good la
dy and spare her to friends and fami
ly for many years to come, and if it
be His will may her last days be the
happiest of her entire existence.
Thursday night last the large barn
belonging to Mr. Robt. W. Bagby,
and located near the public square,
w’as destroyed by fire. Three mules
perished in the flames. Nothing was
saved front the barn and it required
hard and laborious work to save other
buildings in the vicinity. The hook
and ladder outfit ceased to be orna
mental and became very useful. The
origin of the fire is unknown. There
was no insurance and the loss amounts
to more than 81.000. This makes the
third time that fire has destroyed val
uable property for our friend and fel
low-citizen. Within the past few
years, Mr. Bagby, who is a kind and
generous man, honest and industrious
and a one arm vetran, has lost more
than $20,000 by fire, aud yet, be la
bors on and murmurs not. All of
our people sympathize with him in
bis unfortunate misfortunes and hope
that no more fires will destroy his
property and no more bail luck be
fall him.
Misses Maud and Claud Lee gave a
pleasant pound party at their parents’
residence, in this city, Friday night.
About 80 or 90 persons were in atten
dance and a most delightful time ex
perienced. Mr. and Mrs. N. C. Lee
assisted the young ladies in entertain
ing the guests.
Mr. H. M. (Sell) Speer, who has
been with Kelly Bros. & Porter for
the past 4 years, is now at Adams
Bros, popular store, in Covington.
He is one of the best boys in Georgia
and a son of Hon. T. J. Speer. His
old trade will find lie can wait on
them rightly here. Call on him.

FROM SOUTH TO WEST AND
BACK AGAIN,
—™
Continued from last week. I
I ■*
Saturday evening, June I, wo bid
farewell to Kansas City and her kind
and courteous people and left for St.
! Louis over the Missouri Pacific, rail
road, reaching that great city in time
for early breakfast Between these
I cities, while on the cars, a meeting
of the Association was held and Trees
j irer Weston nrote and informed Mnj.
W. I <ih - ner that the hour had ar
rived when somebody about his size
, deserved u genteel caning, whereupon
(’apt. Weston, on the part of the As
sociation, presented the gallant Gloss
! ner with an elegant gold headed nine.
The Major returned thanks in a brief
! but eloquent address, in which he said
that he hud often feared, while in the
discharge of duty, that he would be
called or horse-whipped, hut never
dreamed that the caning would come
j in such a pleasant way and from men
whom he honored and whom he lmd
learned to love.
After breakfast several editors at
tended religious services at some of
| the churches'in >St. Louis, while nth
era rode about the city and lounged
around the hotel. At 11 o’clock the
entire party visited Mr. Henry Shaw’s
! wonderful botanical garden and parks
!—the most attractive places of the
kind in the United States. The gar
den contains 30 acres, and every tree
j that grows and every variety of shrub
or flower to he found beneath the sun
can lie seen in this enclosure. Ele
j gant hot house, neat cottages, lovely
i drives and a magnificent and lttxuri
antly furnished residence can be seen
in this park ; also, a 840,000 vault
in which Mr. Shaw will sleep when
he shuffles off this mortal coil. “The
J old man” is 80 years old, is a bache
j lor, born in England, lived in lßt.
Louis 70 vears, has given millions to
i benevolent purposes, donated the gul
den and a 300 acre park to the city,
| has always been a ladies’ man, was a
hardware merchant, is worth twenty
: live million dollars and is jov'al, hale
and hospitable. “You ought to be a
happy man, Mr. Shaw,” said we. “I
am, at times, but nut always, and it is
best, in my opinion, that no man can
| have perfect and perpetual happiness
lon earth, for life would Ix’come tire
! some and monotinous had we no tiib
ulations while journeying here below,”
said he, with a far away look in bis
eyes. Perhaps he is correct.
In the afternoon many places of in
terest were visited. Other parks and
gardens were inspected, while at night
many attended church. Early Mon
day morning we left for Nashville by
'special train with light of track over
the Louisville & Nashville rail road,
and p- 1 i through a portion of STTs'
tsouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and
Tennessee. Along this line the grain
and other crops are fine, and we were
I told that the wheat crop in Illinois
■ would yield on an average of 60 com
mercial bushels to the acre. We re
mained six hours in Nashville and an
! informal reception was tendered by
| the Commercial Club, with an assu
rance that we would lie entertained in
j royal style should we spend the next
[day there. Notwithstanding this lib
| oral proposition we bid Nashville a
; reluctant adieu and left for Chatta
nooga, reaching there in time for eur-
I]y breakfast. The trip to Lookout
j Mountain was made over the Chatta
| nooga & Lookout Mountain railway.
The scenery here must, be seen to lie
! appreciid- ’.. We also went over some
jof the Rattle fields and visited the
! parks at. 4 lakes about the city,
i Tuesday night we left for Atlanta
'over the-Western & Atlantic railroad
and readied the Gate City in time to
connect pith the night express on the
“old reliable” Georgia railroad, which
landed in Covington at 1 o’clock
Wednesday morning. We had trav
jeled over 2.500 miles, had been vvel
corned in ten states, had been fed on
I the fat of the land, and yet the lov
ling welcome which met us on the hap
'py threshold of the place we call
•‘honuf’ was dearer than any and all
| other welcomes combined.
It gives us pleasure to tip our hat
land return heartfelt thanks to all
who extended courtesies during our
visit abroad. Especially do wc thank
