The Covington Enterprise submits
the following:
Whatever troubles Adam had,
No man could make him sore
By saying when he told a jest,
“Iv’e heard that joke before.”
To which poet Stanton, of the AG
j lanta Constitution, responds :
‘True enough, but—
However, great was Adam’s wit,
ilis brightest joke was vain ;
There was no man t« laugh at it—
So, angry, he “raised Cain.”
In reply our muse would say :
Had Adam lived to this good day,
And found Stanton at his table,
He’d laid him out in a genteel way
And left him dead—like Abel.

to the Indian Spring property, in our
sister county of Butts. Col. Bailey,

government during the Indian treaty

of and provide for the Indian tribes
J duritig said treaty, and that he died
before the government settled said
contract. The name of the claimant
is T. A. Eggleston, who says that the
property belonged to his father, and
he inherited it from him. Ho .states
that Lamar and Hicks were his fath¬

death. Suit may be entered to recov¬
er this property from the state and if
successful we would like to see our
fellow townsman, Mr. John H. Bai

“Uncle Joel’s” estate.
The Covington correspondent of
the Atlanta Constitution, in speaking
of Dr. Candler’s address, says : “Du¬
ring the recess taken by the court at
noon, Dr. W. A. Candler delivered
an address at the court house on the
subject of “Common Schools.” He
made a stirring speech which was fill
ed with unanswerable arguments in
favor of a more thorough education
of the children of the state residing
in the rural districts. He made no
attack on the present school system as
a system, but showed conclusively
that unless its operation is improved
by such an increase of funds as will
secure public schools for at least six
or eight months in the year, it will
never accomplish the objects for which
it was established. The address was
an able and eloquent presentation
the claims upon the state of the five
hundred thousand country children
