From Salem.
'•‘he second of the series of con¬
tests of the Oakland school was
held Saturday evening. Misses
ltuth Cowan and Pauline Burns
were the successful contestants.
Emory college had a “represen¬
tative” at the contest. Try your
hand brother Charlie and find out
if you can not induce more of the
boys to come out next time. Sa¬
lem is the Mecca of all the Emory
preachers.
I was ruminating the other day
on the vicissitudes of life, and as
I compared the different profes¬
sions. callings and stations I
could not but look with compla¬
cent satisfaction upon the life the
student preachers of Oxford lead,
‘iliey go out into the country on
Sunday and preach and are ham¬
pered in what they say only by
their own consciences, their cour¬
age. and the convulsions of their
own little brain. They are for¬
tunate in having no school board
to turn them off or reduce their
salary, no political jobs to nurse,
no money to pay damage suits,
no wife to pull their hair, and
what little religion they have is
deposited m the Methodist church
whose members from its earliest
history have been accustomed to
“speakm’ ” out in “meetin’. 5> If
it were not for their Alma Mater,
they mignt say absolutely what
they thought with impunity.

Mattie visited their sister Miss

speak at Salem on the fourth or
fifth Sunday in this month. We
hope a large and appreciative au¬
dience will welcome Mr. Weber to
our community. He is without a
peer among the literary and intel¬
lectual riches of Georgia. We
