The patent office at Washington has

A copy was secured recently of the
fourth patent issued, says the New i
17s York 1, and Times. issued It was to dated Francis Jan. Bailey 1*9. j

of Philadelphia. The copy is a photo
graph, and the original has been lost,
i This patent bore the signatures of
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson
and Edward Randolph. The claim cov¬
ered a “certain iu method not before
known or used - ’ for for performing J
punches.”
The next oldest patent in the office is
one signed by James Madison, There ;
are several signed by John Quincy
Adams and many signed by Andrew
Jackson.
