Increasing Cleveland’s Popularity
In the current number of his pa¬
per, the Commoner, Mr. Bryan, in
a carefully considered and strongly
.voided article entitled “The His¬
tory of Re-organization,’’ attacks
•dr. Cleveland. It may be that he
is better qnalified to judge of the
effects of such attacks than the
average observer, but the impres¬
sion, as gathered from the public
prints, is that he is increasing Mr.
Cleveland’s popularity.
In the article to which we call
mention he undertakes to point
ut how Mr. Cleveland wrecked
the democratic party, and says
that, Mr. Cleveland represents as no
one else does the plutocratic ele¬
ment. in that party. He also sa-. s
i “is Polish fur Democrats to de
hide themselves with the idea th t
lbert* ever can be ‘harmony between {
those who believe as Mr. Cleve
land does and those who believe in
riio recent platforms of the party.'’
[11 his opinion “Mr. Cleveland has
shown that bis love for the gold
standard is stronger than his love
for the Republic. t 1
If it were not for the fact that
the gold standard has triumphed,
the 16 to i silver idea having prac
ticallv disappeared from the field
of , political ;. . discussion, . Mr ., Bryan ., , s

so and that that standard has come
to be generally accepted.
Rut there does not seem to be
any good reason for Mr. Bivan’s,
fears that Mr. Cleveland will be
the Democratic nominee for Presi
dent next year. In the ‘first place
it is not known that Mr. Cleveland
wants to be President again. He
onstrations is gratified of in course, his favor by the and dem- the j
movement looking to his nomina¬
tion tor President, because it
proves to Mr. Bryan, Mr. Watter
son and some others that their at¬
tacks upon him have not lessened
in the least the esteem in which he
is held by his fellow citizens— j
that, in fact, his popularity is in¬
creasing at a rapid rate in spite of
them.

national convention,
but they will not have a two-thirds
majority, Mr. Bryan and his friends
are sure to have sufficient strength
to prevent the nomination of a man j
as objectionable to them as Mr.
Cleveland is.
It is being pointed out that the ■
fact that Mr. Cleveland refuses to
answer the question as to whether j
or not he is seeking the nomina- !
tion is proof that his ambition is
not yet satisfi* d. As a matter of
fact he isn't called upon to answer
that question. He is probably get¬
some satisfaction out of the 1
situation as it is, and doesn’t care '
to change it, or he may be seeking j
to gain such a hold on his party \
that he will be able to exert a very I 1
great • influence in making the
plat- '
form and the tick next year. B it !
whatever his purpose is there does
not seem to be much probability
that he will be the democratic '
presidential candidate.
