In a word—speak well of our
town.
Cotton is rolling in fast and the
busy season is on.
Covington h paiing the highest
pric; for cotton and cotton seed.
The cotton crop will not be as
large us was thought some weeks
back.
«
The farmers are satisfied with
teu c.nts for their colton and it is
going on the market.
The Manassas boys have return¬
ed delighted with their trip but
not anxious to repeat.
Covington is short on residences.
There are not enough homes here
to supply the demand.
Covington should foel proud of
her school, It has a go"d corps ot
teachers and an enrollment of over
two hundred and fifty.
The streets are full of cotton
each day and the farmers are glad
—tb- price is over ten cents.
Newton’s state and county lax
rate for the year is fit 40 on tht
£ 1000 . Cheaper tlian last year.
The Covington merchants have
made preparations for the larg' st
fall and winter trade in herhistorv
The population of Covington
would be doubled within the next
two years, if houses could be se¬
cured by people who want to move
here.
Another evidence of Republi¬
cans prosperty is furnished by the
closing.down of flic shops of the
Pullman,Car Company,thus thr< I\v
ing 75,000 men out ot employ¬
ment.
The increase in the tnxable val¬
ues in Mississippi this year wa**
$10,000,000; in Alabama it was
about the same and iu Gemg'a
nearly three times as much. The
Southern States are doing very
well, thauk you.
Governor Joe Terrell, the biggest
pile of nothing that ever occupied
the Governor's chair in Georgia,
did not visit the Georgia bovs at
Manassas and had a word of criti¬
cism for the boys because fhev
failed to look him up.
The Covington Chamber of
Commerce would do a great work
if thev would induce somebody to
Conte here to build more residen¬
ces. There are at least a dozen
new families « ho are anxious to
move here butVannot.
It is claimed that the Republi¬
cans arc putting up the campaign
funds for Hon. Thomas E. Wat¬
son. Judging from the nice things
the republican papers are saying
about Mr. Watson there must be
some truth in the statement.
A last express train on th<* Sea
Lord Air Line was wrecked at
Catawba river trestle last Friday
morning, resulting in the death of
four pers' iis. The express was
followed by a light -ngine and
caboose which tumbled in on the
wreckage.

W .{son’s Campaign Not Honest,
-
If Tom Watson were only honest
with his ovn party followers he
might be excused for his hatred of
t,|;H Democratic party aid his con-
1 essed favoritism for Rc sevelt.
The plan, logic of Watson’s po
sition is | hut he desires Parker’s
defeat and Roosevelt’s election,
Then his only lmnest course is to
quit his present campaign and go
at once into the Republican* ranks
as an out-and-out Roosevelt spell¬
binder. In that case all men could
have • espoct tor Ins ex^rciso of his
undoubted right of choice and his
frank honesty in declaring it ef¬
fectively.
Tin* reason why he does not do
that is also plain 1 he great ma¬
jority of the Pophlist, in their real
feelings, do not wish Roosevelt • *v
the Rebublican party in control of
the country.. Ev**ti T- m Watsou
could not drag them bodily into

rally tin tn into a separate column

Repudiating Roosevelt and ad
voeating the election of Judge Par¬

Wolcott nf Colorado informed his
friends that the business inte-ests
of the west demanded the defeat of
the Republican National ticket.
Mr, Wolcott i.< a brother of ex
Ut ited States Senator Edward O
Wolcott ot Colorado, and has even
a larger Republican following in
his state than'hus the ex-Senator.
Mr. Wolcott’s interests are largely
in Colorado mining properties.
In an interview given in New
York, Mr. Wolcott said;
"President Roosevelt, to my
mind, has altogether too many ec¬
centricities and too little balance
and responsibility to be elected
President. We have seen his
reckless disregard of the rights of
nations and of individuals during
the three year* he has held office
as President McKinley’s successor
and . we cult only , conjecture . , w.th ■ ,
fear what course he might persue
weie he to be given a term in office
on his own election The busi
ness men of the West do not dare
vote him into office, for they firm¬
ly believe that both business and
in ternal peace would be upset bv
another term of Roosevelt.
t i Judge Parker is looked upon
as cool, careful, leveled-head. The
Western business men with whom
I come in touch feel the same way
an astonishingly large percentage
of them.”
