The 15th day of last August was
. cur last rain.
Macon’s big fair—the State Parr
opened up Wednesday.
Covington is still the cotton
queen of Middle Georgia.
Covington needs badly a few
more manufacturing industries.
The farmer is in better shape
SaanciaUy than he has over b.en
Its all bluff on tlie part of the
republicans offering bets at two to
one on Roosevelt.
r Mr. Bryan d. dares that the re¬
port that Nebraska would go Re¬
publican this tail was untrue.
The populists have opened head
quarters on Wall street, lt looks
sorter funny, don’t you think ?
The prosperous farmers are hold
ing tbeiv'cotton and there are sev
eral of them in Newton county.
Sam Jones is not very hopefi 1
oi the price of cotton going higher.
He is selling his at the present
pice.
W. L. Douglas, the gr. at shoe
manufacturer, has been nominated
as the democratic governor o!
Massachusetts.
No, the cotton crop will not
retch 12,000,000 bales. In 1S9S
the yield wa3 11.274,000 bales, the
highest ever reached.
Mr. Cleveland is giving tbe
country some wholesome demo¬
cratic doctrine through the medium
of the Saturday Evening Post.
The election occurs three weeks
hence. And there is less talk
about it and apparently less ir.tei
est in it than any national election
ever held.
Don’t forget that Colonel Liv¬
ingston has opposition this year by
a republican, Let the democrats
turn out and give him a tremen¬
dous majority.
Governor Terrell told the Bos¬
ton newspaper men while in the
North attending the launching of
the battleship Georgia, that Tom
Watson would not carry a single
Georgia county, not accepting the
gentleman's home county.
One of the calculations that will
give the presidency to Judge Par¬
ker it he can secure the electoral
votes involved, is this: The solid
South, 151 ; New York* 39; New
Jersey, 12 ; Connecticut, 7; Iudiatia
15; West Virginia, 7; and Mary¬
land, 8; total, 239.
It should not be forgotten that
upon the eve of the presidential
election in 1892 election bets were
made at 4 to 1 or. Harrison. But
Mr. Cleveland was elected, and he
carried among the then debatable
states, New York, New Jersey,
Connecticut, Illinois, Wisconsin,
Michigan and Indiana.

New York Going for Parker.
Abrnham Lincoln utered a
great truth when lie said that the
people Could be iooled for a time,
but they could not be fooled all
the time and this is what the man

are learnittg l)Oth in the fast and
the west. Another fact that Inis
impressed the Jieople most unfa V- j
i ralde in the last week or two is
the aggressive part that the trusts
are taking in behalf of the cause
Q f P|- e si<ietlt Roosevelt and the
large contributions that they are
pouring into hit campaign chest.
The President has cast oft entire
ly the mask of trust hostility and
stands revealed to the country as
their failhtul servant and ally.
pj ence there has been a change in
I j the political situation, which is
j most favorable and encouraging
to the Democrats. That New
: York is certain to go for Judge
Parker is the conclusion which has
been reached by tbe most impar¬
tial observers on the ground, and
this i- a situation that lias a nx st
important bearing on the canvass
i:t other States as every man who
has any political experience
k u0WS without being told. The
New York Evening Post very cor¬
rectly says that party which feels
sure of NewYork has everywhere
an asset of tlio greatest value.
It is easy to maintain that R -ose
velt can be elected without New
York, but there cun not Le the
slightest dt ul>t that the growing
convicti ni that his state is lost
to him is hurting his cause else¬
where'
Augusta suffered a $20,000 c t

hundred bales were distroyed.
Republican Editors Praise Watson
(From the Washington Post )
The interesting announcement
comes Horn New York that Thos
E Watson, the Populist candidate
for president, is to open nutiona
headquarters in that city. In years
past the populists have denounced
•

disturbed over the sudden change
of attitude tovva d Watson on thc
part of republican editors. 'They
charge that when Watson was co¬
operating with life democrat*, the
republican press d mound'd him
as a ‘‘red headed lunatic from Ueor
gia,” as an “enemy of the nation¬
al honor,” as a “crank, 1 t
“mountebank,” and a “blatant
demagogue.” Now' that Watson
is going tip and down the country
denouncing Judge Parker and the
democratic party, runs the com¬
plaint, the republican editors have
discovered that he is a man of
purest motives, a philosopher, stu¬
dent, and historian and withal, a
great and good man whom they
regret has been led, by his views
on certain minor matters, to re¬
main outside the Republican party,
It is now officially announced
that the lour constitutional amend¬
ments voted on in the Iasi elec¬
tion were ratified.
