is the party’s great'-st leader and S
we hope to see him occupy the

Let the next democratic Nation¬

The democrats ot the South h: d

through the ballot. We did that

Politics will cease to he an issue
now, and we of Covington will
busy ourselves with permanent
improvements for the Lest city in
Middle Georgia. No city in the
State has made greater strides du¬
ring the past fnw years ai.d our
people have no notion of ahatnlon
ng the good work.
The entire South gave her el> c
toral vote to Judge Parker. He
failed to carry a State in the Un¬
ion outside of the South, It be¬
gins to look like the South is the
whole party. If, ive of the South
are to constitute the party, then
let us furnish the candidates and
stop this way of honoring blue
belly Y'ankees who have no sym¬
pathy for the people of the South.
A large white shaft will be erect¬
ed in the city paak commemorat¬
ing the valor of tne Confederate
soldiers. The County and City of
Covington ami a number of puclic
spirited citizens have comtributed
money to the cause. The work of
raising money has fallen to the lot
of that old hero, Capt, G. D.
Heard. Every man, woman and
child in Newton county should
contribute something to it.
For the first time since he en¬
tered Newton county politics some
twenty years, ago Col. Living¬
ston led the ticket in Tuesday’s
election. He has fought many
hard battles, against strong com¬
binations and during the past few
years the people have learned that
in him they have a leader as well
as a statesman and a congressman
who tights their battles with the
same energy that he does his own.
At the convention of the Nat¬
ional Liquor Dialers’ Association
held m St. Louis recently resolu¬
tions were adopted commending :
Bishop Potter for his endorsement
of the Subway Tavern, a fashion¬
able liquor saloon in New York
city. This must be comforting to
the reverent gentleman in the face
of so much criticism from ot he r

Effort to Force Cotton to 12 cts •
Xetv York, Nov. 7.—No little
interest has been excited both
those who speculate in cot¬
ton and the buying agents of man¬
ufacturers over tho repoat that at
the meeting of the Cotton Growers’
at Dallas, Tex. reso¬
lutions were adopted to hold the
to 12 cents a pound. Oue
the be?t inf* rtned authorities on
in New York, in speaking
the resolution, said today :
“If the parties involved are nh’e
to hold out u million bales of cot¬
ton for such a price it would o'j
viously curtail supplies to such an
extent that the mills would be
forced to bid up the spot markets.
Even if the crop should reach
11,500,000 ' ales, which conserva¬
tive people uro accepting as a
ma<imum, a million bales held out
would mean trouble. To hold out
a million bales, 200,000 planters
need only to bang on to an
average of five bales each, which
would represent a financial tran¬
saction too trifling to bo burden¬
some. Speculators have become
S’) accustomed to the icei that
theri is only oue sid* to the bat
guin, and that consumers mu t
dictate prices; that tluy, perhaiw,
do not reckon as fully as they
should with the factors that have
checked every decline at a round
9.V cents since last summer, name¬
ly the fact that the manufacturing
consumer lias no reserve and wants
oue; and the fact also that the
producer is adequately supplied
with funds,”
The Editor.
A lawyer charges a man $10 for
ten minutes’ conversation says an
exchange and the man insists on
paying it. A doctor charges for a
prescription and the patient says,
“Oh, pshaw! is that enough?”
An undertaker conducts a funeral
and charges $loo and he is ‘‘just
perfectly lovely” with everyone
inside and outside the family: a
mao buys a gol \ brick and apolo
gizes for not having bitten before;
an editor walks a milk in the hot
sun to get the fact of the death,
wedding or a social function,
spends three hours in writing it
up and tells lies and praises peo¬
ple up till he hates himself. Then
if he makes one insignificant
omission or error, charges 5 cents
straight for throe extra papers he
is a stingy good for nothing cuss,
who never gets anything right; ho
is a most any old tiling and ought
to be run out of town. Talk
about the ice man ! Ilow would
you like to run a newspaper?
