EKIDAY MORNING.
Arbor Day.
All the schools are urged have !
to
appropriate exercises on Arbor day
December 2. and those schools not
already having plenty trees about
e,r school houses will spend at i
, least half the day
in setting out '
trees. j
A valuable pamphlet issued by I
State School Commissioner!
. . I
§ IV,U K m ueh information as to the
,1,ost salable kinds of trees, shrubs *
etc-, for each section jf the state I
and the proper modes ot traus
p anting, Js now being sent out to
all the teachers of the county.
°‘ .^ th’s I s Relieved day will that the observance
sentiment create a stronger
for among our people to
care and cherish trees as our
8"od friends. The ruthless cut
tin 8 awa .V of our forests is a mat
ter of deep regret to all lovers of
oature and the beautiful.
To stimulate the several com
inanities of the county in the no¬
ble work of tree-planting, I shall
be pleased to give to that school
which shall have the greatest num¬
ber of trees, vines, etc., planted at
the school and in the school dis¬
trict. a small hundsome library of
twelve handsome volumes of stan¬
dard literature. Each tree etc.,
planted on the school yard will
count for as much as six at home.
Instructions contained in Mr.
Merritt’s phamphlet must be ob¬
served as to kinds ot trees, vines,
etc., to be planted and the manner
of planting.
Pupils must report to the teach¬
er number of trees vines, etc.
planted , . .
J in the community
till February from
now 1, when contest
closes.
All schools may have half holi¬
day on condition that six or more
trees be planted on the school
yard, and appropriate exercises
observed.
Also, a handsome hook will be
given to the pupils who write the
best essay on Arbor Day, all snan
uscrips to be written in ink and
sent in by Dec. 15.
Though we ourselves may not
receive the benefit of the trees we
plant, but let us be unselfish
enough to plant them for those
who come after us. The brute
plans for today, the savage for to¬
morrow, the wise man for life; but
it took a Jesus to make plans to
materialize after death.

Better than Pills
The question has been asked—
In what wav are Chamherlain’s
Stomach and Liver Tablets super¬
ior to the ordinary catartic and
liver pills? Our answer is—They
are easier and more pleasant to
take and their effect is so agreea¬
ble that one hardly realizes that it
is produced by a medicine. Then

SHOT IN THE NECK.
A deplorable shooting scrape
is a terrible thing for one man to
deliberately shoot another. A
bad pair of shoes is a deplora¬
ble thing. It is not fair for a
Merchant to sell you some other
grade of goods when you
ask for Battle axe shoes.
Dont take any but Battle axe
Brand of shoes your feet will be
dry, you wont have cold all win¬
ter. Now is the time to see W. L.
Adair and get fitted up in Battle
Axe shoe sthe only original.

Old Book Notice.
The time of exchanging old
books will be out January i, and
all who have such books are urged
to get rid of them while the law
requires dealers to allow 50 per
cent ot the cost of a new book for
an old one.
Even if the new books are not
needed they can be sold readily,
they are to be used in the whole
stare exclusively for four more
years.
Almost any old school book is
exchangeable, and nearly every
every home contains many which
are absolutely worthless except to
exchange.
Take them to Mr. Corley at
Covington, or Mr. Childs at New¬
born and turn them into new books
as good as money.
