SEVERAL NEW SCHOOLS
UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
The People of Newton County
Taking a Great Interest in
Educational Affairs.
Newton county’s excellent
school system should be the pride
of every citizen who is interested
in the education of the boys and
girls of the county.
No county in the State, outside
those containing cities, is doing
more for the education of the
masses than Newton. The pro¬
gressive work of our county super¬
intendent and board of education
is already known and commended
all over the State.
The consolidation scheme and
other innovations in school prac¬
tice, inaugurated last year by
Superintendent Adams, with the
approval of t he county board, have
met with splendid success. While
several of the county’s best citizens
at first questioned the advisability
of inaugurating the consolidation
system and free transportation
scheme, the experiment has been
so successful as to win the approval
of some of its most ardent oppo¬
nents. The moral support of the
people of the different communi¬
ties has greatly aided in further
prosecuting the work along pro¬
gressive lines. Everybody seems
to he thoroughly aroused-to the
necessity for education aud the
importance <>f having better facil
i and equipment for successful
school work.
So successful has b^en the work
'• centralizing the schools, and
unding better houses and the
employment of better equipped
*- -achers in the several commum
“ 5 dining the year just past, the
People of other districts have rec
gnized the advantages of the im
; r WL-d system and are anxious to
•' ‘-operate with the county board
the progressive work which they
..ve undertaken for the improve
..eiit of our rural schools.
The construction of three hand¬
some new school buildings in
Newborn, Gaither’s and Rocky
Plains districts has been started
and will be completed by the
opeu'ng of the spring term, Janu¬
ary 1st 1905.
The Newborn (town) school
house is to be erected at a cost of
$ 1,000 and will be built on the site
of the old academy.
The new school building in
Gaither’s district will be an ele¬
gant three-room structure and will
cost somewhere in the neighbor¬
hood of $1,000. Messrs. John B.
Davis, jr. and H. D. Terrell have
donated a pretty site of lour acres
with a fine spring near by for this
school. It is easy to build school
houses when unselfish, big-hearted
men like these lend their aid.
The third new school building
now in process of construction,
which would do credit to a town
of 2,000 people and which is to
cost about $1,500, is situated in
Rockv Plains, district, on what is
^ olI *aless the prettiest school site
* n coun tY- Mr. M. C. Davis

pose,
erection of the house and the sue
cess of the school.
In addition to the progress in
the communities mentioned, the
patrons of the school at Brick
Store have just expended a him
dred dollars in repairing their
school building. The citizens of
Legum district have under advise
ment the building of a large mod
era school house.
Having noted these improve
meats, the Enterprise
lates the comity Superintendent,
Board of Education and the pro¬
gressive citizens of Newton county
upon the important steps they
have taken lor the advancement of
the educational interests of the
county.
