STORE COTTON ; DON’T BURN
IT, SAYS GOV. TERRELL.
Commissioner Stevens Says His
Cotton Will be Warehoused
Until Price Advances.
Atlanta, Ga. Dec. 2U.— “It
•costs too much to make cotton t*>
l>nrn it. I am going to store my
aansold crop ot 15 bales and hold
Jt for 10 cents, and am not, going
to burn any of iny crop. ) I
This statement was made by
Guv. Terrell this morning when
asked what lie thought of the
burning of the cotton at Fort
Gaines.
The Commissioner of Agricul¬
ture said :
“Certainly I am opposed to the
farmers of Georgia burning the
surplus cotton crop and shall not
join in the bon-firo with my unsold
crop. I will store what I have aud
■wait for the price to go back to 10
cents. I don’t burn cotton, bu/t
store it, and next spring I wiii
plant only ten acres to the mule.
This will reduce Die crop to about
six million bales, aud with that
amount on the market the price is
obliged to stay around 10 and 12c.
I can make more money on a six
usilLion bale crop at 12 cents than
twelve million at five cents. 11

Emory Opened Tuesday. I
Emory College opened Tuesday
morning after the Christmas holt
days with an i.'scivased attindance.
With a few exceptions, all the
* 1 1 boys are buck, and a number o'
new faces are among the arrivals.
Etuorv College has the brightest
prospects for a successful term
that it has had in rears.
Covington needs a few more
men like E. O. Lee. He is erect¬
ing five cottages on the property
bought, the first Tuesday in Dec¬
ember. This will furnish room for
some who are crowded in houses
with other families and possibly be
the means of bringing other fam
ilies to our fair city to make their
home. Would that we had a few
mere public spirited men w h 0
could see their way clear to build
houses. They are needed and
needed badly. Instead of having
a population of 2500, Covington
could easily within twelvemonths,
with residences built, have a pop
ulatiou of 3000 to 8500. Possibly
it has never occurred to you that
every family induced tomoyehere
will spend in the course of twelve
months from $500 to $S00. New
homes mean more families to move
here who would help greatly in
lessening our taxes and- making
Covington true to its name, a pro¬
gressive city. Mr. Lee has started
the ball and we trust there will
be many others to follow.
