New York, June 24.— From i
present indications it seems im
probable that New Aork city will
reach the 4 000,000 mark in the
,
new Slate census, although press
ing it closely. From the best pro¬
curable figures, reliable statistics
and reports from the still unconi
pleted districts in the city, it is
predicted that the population of
New York city on June 1, was
8,987.154.
Most important, however, to the
New Yorker is the population of
«.M New York, Manhattan and the
.Bronx u or New York county. In
r *'
dicatiot.s point . to a total enumera
lion of 2,878,690. The growth of
the city of New York from 1 * GO,
the year of the first federal census
is shown:

Undoubtedly the most popular
wav to arrive at a true conception
ot the impressive size of the met¬
ropolis of the New World is to
compare it with the population of
other great cities at home and
abroad. The following table com
pares the largest nine cities in the
world, in their order, from latest
procurable figures:

Hiratu Kirby, living near Still

day night by United States Mar¬
shal Stalnaker and carried to Sa¬
vannah, where he was given a
hearing before Judge Speer on the
charge of illicit distilling, has re¬
turned home, having furnished
bond tor his appearance at the next
term of the court. Kirby admits
having the still in his yard, but
claims that it was for a legitimate
purpose, that of distilling water
for a sick daughter. He has al¬
ways borne a good reputation. His
friends agree that the water prop¬
osition is a pretty thin excuse, but
on accou.it of his past reputation,
are inclined to credit his 3tory.
