Uoawcd by the Crisis He Indulges
in Levity.
From the Saturday Evening Poet]
STOTESBUHY’S 'WAX HOSE.
Stotesbury lost bia nose in early life during
an interview with a patent bay-chopper, but
he succeeded in procuring a wax nose of such
marvelous construction, that only keen
scrutiny could detect the fraud. One night
last winter while btotesbuiy was on his way
to Miss Johnsons', a tremendous fire broke out
and Stotesbury stopped to look at it. He be-
camedeeply interested and drew quite neat to
the flame. The heat was so great that Suites-
bury’s nose gradually softened, and assumed
something of the shape of a raw oyster. He
did not notice it, however, but went calmly
onward to Mies Johnson’s. When heentered
the servant girl at the door gave one startling
look at him and began to laugh in a most
boisterous manner. Stotesbury, indignant,
pushed forward to the parlor; as he entered
Miss Johnson rose to receive him. As she
cought a glimpse of his nose she stopped,
looked amazed, and t hen buried her
face in her handkerchief in a convul
sion of laughter. “What is the meaning
of ibis extraordinary conduct, Miss John
son V" demanded Stotesbury. “Ob, Mr
Stotesbury’,” shesaid, “please excuse me—but
wha—wha—wba—what’s the matter with
your nose?” Stotesbury went to the pier
glass, gazed at that curious oyster on his
face—jammed bis hat suddenly on his head,
and fled from the room. As he reached the
entry, he found Miss Johnson’s little brother
just coming in the door, and as that urchin
perceived the condition of Stotesbuiy’s face,
he gave one wild yell and shrieked: “Oh,
Tilly! come here, come here quick, and look
at old Stoteaoury’s nose!” Then Stotesbury
emerged all at once from the front door and
went home. He is now wearing an india-
rubber nose, and he goes past Johnson’s with
out ringing the bell
A WARNING IN TIME.
A New Jersey clergyman, we are informed,
has denounced base ball as wicked, and has
warned bis congregation not to engage in it.
We have long been convinced of the sinful
ness of that atrocious game, and we rejoice
that some one has been found with sufficient
courage to proclaim the fact. But the good
work must not stop here. There are other
pastimes of even more fiendish—more dia
bolical infamy. What is the use of having
8unday-schools. if the little children who
learn religious truth therein are to be per
mitted to go home and engage in* that
pernicious and soul-destroying game en
titled “ Tread, tread the green grass.” Is
there any hope for the morals of the people
of this great nation, when even babes who
can hardly waddle are allowed to revel in the
unhallowed pleasures of “Pussy wants a cor
ner?” Can we hope ever to make decent
citizens and modelsof unaffected piety out of
boys whose natures are defiled by frequent
and scandalous indulgence in the atrocious
licentiousness of “murnb ey peg ?” We think
not. Unless a warning voice is raised in the
pulpit and the press against the dangerous
tendencies of these games and the scandalous
impropriety of “Copenhagen,” we shall move
swiftly forward to national demoralization
and social ruin. Base ball, forsooth 1 Why,
one game of jack Btr&ws has a greater ten
dency to paganism and crime tnan all the
base ball that has ever been played.
HO MATTER WHAT THE FACTS ARE.

A correspondent wbo professes to know
the American CoDsnl at (Shanghai, says the
atoiy published by ns last week to the effect
that the merchants of that city have present
ed the Consol with an umbrella is an absur
dity. He knows it is not true. This makes
no difference to us. If the Consul had an
umbrella given to him U is so. The Consul
may not be aware of the fact; he may take
the most violent kind of oaths that no such
ceremony occurred, but he is only to be
pitied. When a newspaper asserts, for in
stance, that a particular man—say George F.
Train—is dead, that man to all intents and
purposes is a coipse, no matter what he
iiiinka of it. He may still eat and sleep and
move about, bnt he is nothing bnt mere
inanimate remains. He is mistaken, and if
he had that confidence in the papers which
every American citizen ought to have, he
would candidly admit that he is simply a
corpse, which ought to be promptly buried.
This seems to be necessary if the public
press is to command respect. If every per
son whom we pronounce defunct is to be
permitted to walk around at large, insisting
most absurdly that he is alive in spite of the
papers, journalism can no longer command ,
popular respect. When we have our way
there will be a State undertaker, whose busi
ness it will be instantly to bustle into the
silent tomb every man whom the newspapers
decide to be dead.
THE MONTHS WITH “b” IN THEM.
We always welcome the return of the
month of September, because, as there is an
r in its name, oysters may be eaten. And we
cannot help reflecting sometimes upon thefaet
that it is a verv wise dispensation of nature
that the letter r was selected as the particular
number of the alphabet which agrees with
oysters, if it had been arranged for instance
that oysters were only fit to be eaten in the
months which a z orx in them, it is perfectly
manifest that we should never have been able
to nse the bivalvef at all, unless, indeed, the
matter could have been arranged by changing
the name of the months. The operation
of this mysterious law which makes it indis
pensable to the success of an oyster, is one of
the most remarkable things in the whole
cosmogony of nature; and not less wonder
ful is (he instinct which enables an oyster,
which lies quiet during the summer, to come
out and swim up to the large cities on the
very first day of September, ready to be
opened. [We have co copyright on that
word cosmogony. It was introduced here
because we want to be impressive, and to
give an air of grandeur to the subject Per
sons wbo consider the word a success in this
direction are at liberty to use it without pay
