APOLOGY.
A Terrible Smash.
SB0IA.
Died of diptheria in Senols, after a severe illnesr,
on Thursday evening, October 9th, How B Barne*,
daughter ot Walker and Carrie Birne*.—Mr. T. 6.
Gw haa lost two children with diptheria. Prole*aor
Wells, of Hewnan is instructing the silver cornet
band of Henoi*. some good music is expected soon.
An old-fashioned sock and flat light occurred
among the darkles on a farm a few miles from Turin
last baturday night. It is doubtless whether the
famous Bull Bun stampede surpassed the getting
away from that farm. Cracked heads, marked faces
and swollen eyes were found the next day all over
the country.—Journal.
We know that we shall not only be ex-
awed by our weekly sabecriben for the con
ftwed and defective condition of this week’s
OanrmmoH, but also receive their hearty
sympathy. Just as the four outside farms
were started from the top story
of the high Constitution building,
the elevator broke all its ropes, in
eluding the safety one, and was precipitated
with a fearful crashing down through four
floors. Three forms were knocked into a
shapeless mass of type, much of which is
ruined. We nevertheless determined not to
disappoint our readers, if possible, and have
accomplished the almost marvelous feat of
sending them a pretty full weekly without
the loss of scarcely a day.
The accident entails pretty severe loss npon
us—several hundred dollars. But only let
our readers respond to the Constitution’s
appeal for advance subscriptions for our
great premium list, and we shall pnt an
elevator in our new building, that the weight
of a small mountain could, with difficulty,
break. Remember, there are four premiums
amounting to one-half the Consti
r Building, or $5,000 in gold.

We begin this morning the first chapters of
athrilling story by the author of “Annie Sin
clair,” which created such a wide-spread de
mand. Subscribe at once, if you would keep
up with this new serial.
We also publish our first letter from the
distinguished author, Mrs. Maria J. West
moreland. Next Sunday we hope to give
our readers their first treat from the pen of
Prof. Waddell of the State University.
newspaper Premiums.
The Atlanta Constitution offers the
largest premium list to its subscribers that
we have ever known to be offered by
Southern newspaper. We refer to an
advertisement elsewhere for the particu
lars. Thb Constitution is a capital paper,
and a subscription to it would be an excel
lent investment without regard to any pre
mium. We constantly show our high ap
preciation of it by the selections which we
make from its columns. Being published at
the seat of Government, and enterprising
and industrious in gathering the news of the
8tate, it is a paper which every Georgian will
find of interest.—Columbus Sun.
We are much gratified by this very kind
notice. Our plan of Presents to our subscri
bers is meeting with great success. We ask
nothing from old or new subscribers but

Rev. Dr. Shesbadri, a converted Brahmin,
told the Evangelical Alliance the other day
how he was converted: “I had been taught
that one of onr gods drank down at one gulp
all the water of all the oceans. Then 1 was
taught the story of another god—a monkey,
whose name was Ram. This god once lost
his wife, and he was sore distressed. He
■ought for the lost one far and wide, but
could not find her. At last one day he learned
that she had been stolen and taken to the
island of Ceylon. Forthwith he wrapped
rags around his long tail, saturated them
with oil, set them on fire, and visiting Ceylon
horned the whole island over. This story
was more than I could swallow.”

The excitement of fire In Thomasvl lie last week
originated In an old barn. A small boy was polled
out from underneath the building, with both pockets
full of lightwood splinters, and friction matches. Be
informedthe crowd that he set the bara on fixe “to
have a little fun.” The admiring mother of the young
gentleman escorted him carefully home, where, hav
ing tucked back the sleeves of her dress, and gathered
np her well done clothes paddle, she show ed the Inge*

had ever experienced in hit life before. The young

Friday for the benefit of the Memorial Association.
A Barnesville merchant sold over $2,000 worth of
goods one day last week. This speaks well for the
place.—Gazette.
We judge that Barnesville intends to cel lime ot
the fashions this season. The Gazette is certainly
advertising, this week, some articles of apparel which
do not appear in any fashion book* to which we have
had access. We do not doubt, however, but that such
" do exist. We dip the following from an sd-

into the loft at Williams’ Livery Stable on Wednes

A collection was taken no in the Baptist congrega
tion on Sunday for the suffering at Shreveport and
Memphis.—For three or lour days past it has bsen
rumored in Griffin that young BngUah, wno recently
prosecuted some negroes for robbery, bad been found
dead in Pike county. The report is that a very ugly
bruise was found in the region of his heart. Nothing
definite is known. In tbe eyes of an ordinary Grit-

A third-class sneak thief went through the kitchen
window of Mr. T. H. Stafford’s residence on Saturday

fingers on tbe window fill. The Augusta cotton
market was quiet throughout Monday from want cf
money, and doted weak. The regular October
term of Richmond Superior Court commences next
Monday. Toe entire docket is s very heavy one, em
