hours to look upon the face of the dead,
were not drawn there by any mere curi
osity. They went to cast a look at the
features of one who had been their con
stant and untiring friend. Horace Gree
ley struck for what be believed to be
right, until mind and heart gave way.
He lies dead upon the field. Let me re-,
mind you that Horace Greeley’s life wa3
remarkably practical, and no man, it
seems to me, was more given to practi
cal purposes than he. How many
lives has he stimulated to wholesome
energy I How many great interests of
education, science and progress mourn
him now 1 All these tributes to-day tes
tify to the recognition of the virtues of
this gr rat and good man. The President
of the nation joius in this tribute to the
patriot and the man. (Murmurs of ap
plause.) Let me take occasion to urge
Mr. Greeley’s views of Christianity. He
lived on the essential truths of Chris
tianity. He laid on them his weary head
and weary heart, and died wx.ury with
the turmoil of life. Does truth come to

the clearness of his expression, and in
the concise and logical conclusions
drawn from premises which he believed

earnest labor, courageous action and
manly independence, as well as the evi
dence ot a temperate, orderly and well-
spent life. We remember him in con
nection with our own calling as the
faitliful apprentice, tbe good printer, the

can organs of this city to-day express a
dissatisfaction with the continuance of
these gentlemen in tneir official positions
as chairmen of the Committee. The
Republican attributes the vote of the
