TH E ATLANT A HUN
JKa?" Mr. Alit'tnj S. Hewitt, at a meet
ing of the Poljieohcio Association bold
less than a yonr ago, rays “Tbe region in
Alabama to which our attention has been
called :o-n;gl.t is unquestionably the
most interesting region in the United
States with reference to the interest of
iron manufacture in this country. It is
in fact fiie only ]>’uicc on the American
continent wnere it is possible to make
iron .u competition with the cheap iron
of England, measured not by tho wages
paid, nut by the number of days’ labor
•which enter into its production, lhe
cheape-t place, until now, on 1 be globe
for manufacturing iron, is the Cleveland
region ; n Yorkshiie, England. Tho iron
produced from a fossiliferou* ore, con
taining phosphorus, making it cold-
short, cost there about thirty two En
glish e hihiugs on tLeuvcia; p r ton,
m ueb represents about ten days’ luber.
Toe distance of the coal and oro from tbe
fu:na averages about twenty miles.
“Now, in Alabama, the coi l and ore
are within half a mile of eacn other.
The sandstone formation thins out to
wards the South, and in Tennessee and
Alabama, appears to be replaced by this
bed of fossiliferous iron ore, which in
Nt.w York, with a thickness rarely ex
ceeding two feet, but steadily thickens
towards the South, averaging four feet
thick in Pennsylvania, seven or e'eht in
Tennessee, while in Alabama, prooably
because the formation was crushed buck
upon itself in some way, there are place 1 -
where tLo iron has been measured 350
feet in thickness.”
The consumption of iron is in
creasing at a rate so wonderfully
rapid that in ten years it will be
impossible for Great Britain to supply
the demand. There is no other country
in tin- world that can make iron as cheap
ly us Great Britain to suj ply the demand.
In lifty years, then, tho United States
must be the source from which the iron
of tho world will be derived. Instead of
importing a million of tons per annum
a? we now do, in fifty or a hundred years
we shall export five or tea millions per
annum. This region, so exliaustlefs in
its supplies, so admirably lurnisued with
coal, so conveniently communicating
with the Gulf will be of infinitely more
consequence to us for its iron than it
ever has been for its cotton. There it-
the foundation tor our industry, and a
propriety which no interference wiith
commercial laws cun overturn. The center
of this great regionis only 150 miles from
Atlanta by tho Georgia Western Bail-
road. The direct route for shipment to
the Sou.li Atlantic ports will be over
this road.
