As already described, when arraigned
before Judge Dowling yesterday, Len
nox behaved with the greatest indiffer
euco. For >ome unexplained reason,
Jn>fge Dowling did uot eu'ertain the
oomplniut of threatening to shoot, bnt
hutted the charge to one of sednotion
it rood became evident that tbe offense,
having been committed five yean ago,
was barred by tbe statue of limitations,
and was reall r ont of the reach of tae
law. Lennox was remanded however, ir
order to allow Miss Carroll time to pro
cure a warrant in New Jersey. This was
found impossible because of the case be
iog outlawed, and when tbe case came up
again in the afternoon, an effort was made
by the Magistrate to induce Lennox to
marry the girl. James Carroll remained
with the other sister in the examination
room, while Judge Dowling brought
Margaret Carroll and Lennox into his
private office. Fefore they left the ex
amination room, Magaret said: “I don’t
want any support. I don’t want mm to
live with me; all I want is that he give
his name to my ohild.” In a few min
utes after Judge Dowling came ont of
the private room and said:
“I have made the proposition, and hr
aefosee,”
At these words James Oarroll’s band
went rapidly to bis breast and he rose
from his chair. Judge Dowling noticed
the movement, and exclaimed:
“Have yon got a pistol ?”
Gamut made no reply, bnt tamed to
warn the door tnrongh wkion Lennox
wm to re enter the room.
Judge Dowling jumped over the table
and took a loaded aix-obamber revolver
from Carroll.
“It is Incky yon did it, sir,” said Oar-
roll, “for I would have shot him.” Len
nox then entered the room, followed by
the unfortunate girl, who was crying bit
terly. James Carroll said:
“Will you marry her?—say yes or no.
She does not want to live with yon, docs
net want a penny from yon, and yon can
get a divorce after you marry her. ”
Lennox aid not even turn his head,
bnt replied: “I want to know what legal
grounds there are f.-r my detention. I
refuse to do any such a thing.”
James Carroll t*ecame quite excited,
and exclaimed, passionately:
“I know yoa now. I hunted you for
three years and a half, not kt-owins you.
I would have killed you here to-day, aud
11‘11 you now that I will *ollow yon to
tour grave, and I’ll snoot you l.kea dog.”
Judge Dowlinp, turned to Lennox
said:
“Yon miserable wretch, I am compell
ed to discharge yon. ”
Lennox slunk out of the rtiom, and,
jumping iuto a carnage, drove sway.
James Carroll went at on-e to Reming
ton's store and bought a revolv* r auu a
b x of cartridges. Suoh was the denotie
merit of % scene in tb< i’umb’s yesterday.
