Investigation of the Sheltnll Cnac—Bis
Discharge hy the Com t.
Dr. B. F. Sheftall, as is well known by
our readers, was inflicted by the learned
Farrow and his pliant grand jury some
time since, for violation of the enforce
ment act, in that he prohibited a certain
negro from voting at an election Leld
last year.
Tne case was set for trial yesterday,
and upon the announcement made by all
parties that they were ready, the eminent
District Attorney proceeded with the
prosecution The indictment was taken
up by one of tbe defendsnt’s counsel,
and demurred to. Pending the decision
of the Coart upon the demurrer, Mr.
Lester and Mr. Hartridge, of counsel for
the defense, requested the Court to give
them time to go to their offices to get
some books whicn they needed in thr
triaL The request was granted, and du
ring their absence Judge Bradley exam
ined the indictment.
After careially looking through (he re
markable document, Judge B. very
quietly remarked to the learned counsel
lor the United Stales that if he could
find any crime set forth in that indict
ment it was rather more than he (Judge
B.) could do. The classic brow of tnc
learned At-orney contracted somewhat
upon this remark, and he endeavored to
explain th< matter to the dull compre
hension of the Court. But if the Court
didn’t know herselt she thought she did,
and Farrow found it was “no go.” So
he caved, and the gentlemen wno had
left the Court House for tLeir books re
turned juBt in time to hear the Court
sustain their demurrer, and tbe case was
quashed. Alas ! poor Yorick.—Savan
nah Advertiser, 16iA in si.
The Confederate Dead at Richmond.
A late Richmond letter to the Peters
burg Index contains the following para
graph concerning the Confederate dead
in tbe former city:
“D is not generally known, but is
nevertheless a fact, that Oakwood Ceme
tery, near this oity, contains the remains
of more Confederate soldiers than any
in tbe country. The nnmber here in
terred is 18,000, Hollywood having sev
eral thousand less. Notwithstanding
this fact and the additional fact that they
claim to be the first in the South to
decorate the graves of confederate sol
dies, as is now the custom, the ladies of
the Oakwood Association have piobably
received less assistance in or out of Rich
mond than aoy other association having
the caie of a cemetery. On Hollywood
day that beautiful city of the dead is
thronged with people, and business is
generally suspended in Richmond; bur
on OaKwood day there is rarely more
than a handful of people in that ceme
tery. To-morrow our people will mnke
an effort to do better, and the First Regi
ment will in a body march to Oak wo no
and lay their floral tribute on the graves
of the dear departed.”
Thx Convention jnkxt Week.—The
great gathering at Atlanta next week 01
Governors, Congressmen, Mayors of cit
ies and other prominent men has called
forth many comments. All seotions dis
cuss it. The Northern and Eastern States
treat it seriously, and their cities seem to
think it bodes no good to their future
trade. The New Orleans press seem dis
posed to sneer at it as an absurd project
to create a water route in rivalry to the
great river. The managers of railroads
on parallel routes to ths contemplated
canal see nothing to sneer at. They see
in it a formidable competitor in the pos
sible future.—Augusta Constitutionalist.
