The plain tiff claims that in January, 1866, the de fendants seized 1,800 bales of oo ton, of the vslae ol $600,000, in Georgia; that the same was illegally taken, and although the defendants bsve been requested to iwtarn the same, they have refused to do ao. The defendants, in answer, olaimed they seized the ootton os special Treasury agents of the Government, and, as such, disposed of it and paid the proceeds in to the hands of the Government, and ore, therefore, not responsible. San Francisco, June 14.—The Allen and Cypras have arrived with over 2,000 Chinese aboard. The Ci ina Mail com ments severely upon tbe persecution of Chinese in San Francisco. Tbe Japanese Minister of Finance has resigned and publishes a letter setting forth the debt of tbe Empire at $104,000,- 000. They say tha’ tbe people are ex- oessively taxed and that tbe debt is in creasing yearly in conseqne .ee of the new schemes of the government. Po&- aiblv the Ministers may receive orders to oommit Hari Kari. An aucient Christian Church has been discovered in the interior of Japan. The resigning Ministers say that Ja pan seems to be going ahead but is ac tually lagging behind, and a national financial collapse may happen at any moment. St. Louis, Jane 14.—The Mary Mc Donald was burned on the Missouri river. Major Henry E. Wing, ot the Times, is dead. Samuel H. Richardson & Co., commis sion merchants, have failed. Henderson, Ky., June 14.—An insane man attending a circus killed a child with a club and injured a number of others. He was arrested after receiving three shots from the police. Paris, Kt., June 14.—A negro u as hanged to-day for killing another negro in 1872. The rope was too long; but tbe Beci nd attempt proved successful London, June 14.—A Vienna dispatch says that the number of visitors to tn Exhibition is far less than was antici pated. Trades people, and inhabitants generally, are greatly discouraged at tbe absence of strangers, and prices for living, which have hitherto deterred per sons from visiting the city, have been re duced. It is said that ex-Quern Isabella is about to proceed to borne for tbe pur pose of conferring wirh the Pope upon the prospect of the Bouibon family in opaiu. John Camden Hatter, known as pub lisher and bookseller in this city, di.a to-day. A special correspondent at Paris, of a London house, in a dispatch, says: An alliance has been effected between the supporters of Ex-President Thiers and the Radicals in the Assem bly. Thiers is said to have had freqneut conferences with Gambetca, since his re tirement from the Presidency, of the Re public. London, June 14.—Dispatches from Berlin says Emperor William continues in a very weak condition, aDd that he re quires absolute quiet in order to effect tne restoration of his health. Memphis, June 14.—Caterpillars have again appeared in an adjacent oonnty. They are worse in North Mississippi than ever before. Owing to the incessant rains grass aud weeds are also damaging the ojttoD crop. St. Louis. June 14.—John F. Cook, English Vice-Consul here, is in custody for tbe alleged embezzlement of $1,800 from Thomas Graham. with severe pains. He was token to seven, Ek!ridge street, where he was treated for jaundice. On Monpaj morning his sickness was followed oy a black vomit, and at 11:30 a. m., he died of unmistakable yellow fever. Health oflh era were notified, and after thorough ly disinfecting tbe room and buryiug tbe clothing, thebody was buried in the pot ter’- field. President Grant and family retarned to Long Branch this morning. Tbe publishers of an indecent paper, called tbe Echo, in Newark, were fined $100 to-day. An elevator and thi*ty thonsand bushels of wheat were burned at Cresca, Iowa, yesterday. Two-thirds of Maxwell, Ontario, is burned. Loos heavy. Tbe Chftwood House, a new hotel at Newport, N. J., was burned last nignt. Loss not known. Berlin, June 18.—Ranmer, an emi nent Gturnon historian, is dead. Philadelphia, June 14. — President Grant accepted an invitation lrom Hon. Joseph R. Hawley, President of the United States Centennial Commission, to participate, on the 4th of Jaly, in the ceremonies attending the transfei of the grounds in Fairmont Pork to the Com mission for the exhibition of 1876. Nashville, June 14.—Leading physi cians in Nashville are now and have been from the first div.ded in opinion among themselves on the qut stion whether there lias been a single case of real cholera in Nashville dating this season. The mor tality in the city certainly increased for ten days, until four days ago, when it began to d» crease. Tne doctors report i he oases, of wnatever nature they may be, as entirely cottrolable. The average number of deaths are 12 i0 15 a day, and occur mainly among the negroes. * Memphis, June 14,—There were only 12 interments here to day from all dis eases against 14 yesterday.
