TUB ANCIENT HU..
Do yon rsmembar tba goldsn day,
In the autumn sweat and still.
When we took the path that wandered away
To the gray old ruined mill,
Carting the grass, untrodden and green,
Where no mower* scythe had shone;
And under the elder boughs, that thick
On the streamlet* bank had grown f
We reached the end of the winding path;
We stood at the old mill's door;
But the ponderous wheel lay idle now.
And its white sails spread no more.
No miller then, with hla powdered suit.
Was hastening to and fro.
For they heaped his grave in a quiet nook.
In the years of long ago.
The water beneath flowed darkly on,
The alders beat over the tide,
Aw* * few wild flowers, of Heavea’s own blue.
Grew on the stresmlet's side.
Tbs vines of the wild grmpe hung above.
With its clusters purpling there;
And the note of s bird from the neighboring wood,
With melody Ailed the air.
Wa lingered there in the alder etude,
‘Neath the grapevinee' pale green woof.
And turned away an the sunset pleyed /•>
On the old miU’e ancient roof.
And wa thought of the changer time hed brought;
Of the heart that wee lying still;
Of the hands, returned to dust, that wrought
Of old, in ths busy mill.
I still remember that cool green way.
And I hope, while memory lasts.
You will keep the thought of thet bright still dry.
And its pictures of ths past.
1 send you s withered flower I’ve kept.
That grew by the mill stream's flow:
Does It waken memories that hava slept,
Of that time in long ego f

There are as many roads to fame and fortune as
there were gateways to ancient Thebe*. Yonr am
bitious warrior is for carrying his way with the
»abre; your aspiring politician for scheming his way
by intrigue and consummate art. But there is one
grand broad path to the goal, along which nothing
base can travel. It is the path set apart for the
march of talent, energy, and noble purpose and
though full of obstacles. It contains none that a brave
man cannot surmount. This fact has been exemplified
n Innumerable Instances, but In lew more forcibly
ban In the rise and progress or DB. HOOFLAND’S
GERMAN BITTERS. For over fifteen years Its course
has been onward and upward, scattering blessings at
every step, until it now stands on tbs topmost rounds
ef the ladder of fame, ss the

Moke American Men-ov-Wab Wanted on the
Fishinq Ghounds.—We have already chronicled the
fket that a considerable fleet of British men-of-war
have left England for this side of the Atlantic, sup
posed to bedCsfaned for the fishing grounds. This
movement calls for immediate and vigorous measures
on the part of the American government. It demands
the presence on the fishing grounds of a fleet of
American men-of-war able to cope with the English
and protect the rights ot our hardy fishermen. We
should not suffer defeat upon any position we may at-
tempt to maintain In this matter on account of in
sufficiency of naval strength. We should be success-
fill from the beginning, and no repetition of the Ches
apeake and Shannon aflkir permitted. The arrogance
of English nevy officers is proverbial, and there is no
knowing at what moment they may fire the first Bhot.
We should have ready a naval force sufficient to take
the bnll by the horns from the start. ’ It is no doubt
very pleasant to have large fleets in the Mediterranean
and on other agreeable stations, but they are of no
practical use at this juncture. They are wanted at
-points where a hereditary enemy presents a menacing
attitude. They ere wanted dh the turbulent waters of
the Banka of Newfoundland, in the Bays of Fundy
and Chaleur, and not upon the placid waters of
the Mediterrranaan. We truBt the government
will immediately order to the fishing grounds those
fleets now doing fancy duty abroad.—A'. T. Herald.

PBOSPKOg* fob a Cotton Cbop.—We have taken
some little pains during tbs put week to ascertain
the comparative amount of cotton that will b. planted
this year in this and the adjacent counties. From
the bast information we can gat we learn that the
large planter* will on an average plant nearly, or
quite half, the ueual crop before the war. This includes
their rented lands with those they actually cultivate
themselves. Besides this case that we denominate
large planters, there are in every county some two or
three hundred email planters, or farmers, who, be
fore the war, either planted no cotton at all, or a little
for home consumption, Now this Utter class are strain
ing every nerve to make a cotton crop, and gee now
“Uying off” for from'five to fifteen bales to the family.
Jit is true that the scarcity of money and the high
price of cotton seed greatly increase the difficnltiee in
their way, bnt they are very determined, and will do
their “level beet” to succeed.
Taking all these things Into consideration, and
judging from the most reliable information we can
get, we are inclined to believe that over one-balf of
the usual cotton crop will be planted this year In
Bartow, Polk, Floyd and Chattooga counties.
