UTiHVAH, FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 18M.
AN INDIGNANT BMOMSTBAKCE FROM AN OVEHCHARGED
Obi maker* of gas refleot,
What rates you on us levy;
It surely oannst be correct.
Our “light’' should come so “heavy."
Blame not my verses if they halt.
Or rhymes not quits comple are;
You ought to know how oft a fault
Will happen to the “metre.”
Bylaw just ten per cent, your gains;
Yon find it better answers
At twice that sum to fill your mains;
You look to the main chance, sirs.
By artful tricks you dodge Ihe Act
Which should be your reliever
Your gas tricks anger me—in fact;
I’m in a gas-trick fever.
Give us cheap gas 1 you'll find it pays,
And well (I'm certain quite of it ;)
Gas is no trifle now-a-days.
Although we all make light of it.
IN GENERAL,
The Anglo-Brarilian Times urges the gradual
substitution of free for slave labor; and encourages
immigration and the introduction of Asiatic laborers.
—The Usxlcan Times says that the production of
eotton in that Empire is steadily lnersaslng. Im
mense wagon loads of it are continually passing
tbrsugh the streets of the City of Mexico.
—A latter from Paris report* the fashionable women,
not content with wearing crinolines, tbs springs of
which are made of pure gold and silver, have now
taken a fancy to boots with heels plated with the same
preoious metals. These boots may be seen lu the
shop windows of some of the fashionable shoemakers
—Money is very scarce in Russia. Immense num
bers of estates are announced for sals, but no pur
chasers present themselves. The most important
commerce of the Russian empire, that of cereals, is
at a complete stand still, there being no demand for
exportation.
—The Cork Examiner says that in the south of
Ireland the constabularly are rsslgaing in large num
bers, in consequence of the Inadequacy of their pay,
and are emigrating chiefly to Australia.
—Lorenzo Demorest, of Sussex, New Jersey, sn
nounced his own death last week. * Us said his dead
lather came to his bedside and kissed him and drew
his cold hand over his breast. “That means death,"
said Lorenzo, and I shall die to-night, and die he did.
—The Sheriff of Dinwiddie county, Virginia, wus
encountered on Thursday last, on the road near the
Court House, by three armed negroes aud robbed of
all his papers.
—Shanghai advices to the 9th of March state that
the Imperial troops had gained a complete victory
over the rebels in the No.-th of China, and that 50,000
IX) of the latter had been slaughtered or captured.
—At a dancing match in Chicago, recently, a buxom
Dutch girl danced nine hours consecutively, when her
partner acknowledged himself fairly beaten and very
tired. The damsel then took six glasses of lager and
quietly went to breakfast.
—The Brinsley brothers, who hare been astonish
ing San Francisco people by performing all the usual
acrobatic feats on a horizontal bar attached to a bal
loon, 1,000 feet in mid-air, are coming East.
—A New Jersey lighthouse keeper put out the lights
at midnight, on the ground that be thought all vessels
ought to be in harbor before that time.
—The Hartford Insurance Companies have advanced
their premium rates twenty-five to fifty per cent, on
extra hazardous risks. They have added but Httle to
their surplus aocounts the present year, on account of
their numerous losses.
—The French troops are to be withdrawn from
Mexico in detachments; the first on the first of No
vember, 1866; Becond on first of March, and third on
the first of November, 1867.
—A New York papa last week trimmed his daughter’s
bridal veil with $1,000 greenbacks, and then gave her
as a marriage portion sixty-two shares of Pacific Mail.
A mode of pacifioation agreeable to most males, we
should think.
—At a recent steeple-ohase, near Liverpool, thirty
horses started, all the favorites were beaten, and the
winner was a gaunt outsider, whose owner quietly
pocketed $135,000 by the race.
—A gentleman of Boston recently received a tele
graphic dispatch in twenty-six days from Japan via
San Francisco. This is believed to be the quickest
time ever made.

READ WHO SAYS SO.
•FROM THE HON. THOMAS B. FLORENCE.
Washington, January 1, 1804.
Gentlemen.-—Having stated It verbally to you, I
have no hesitation in writing the fact, that I experi
enced marked benefit from your Hoofland’s German
Bitters. During a long ana tedioas session of Con
gress, pressing and onerous duties nearly prostrated
me. A kind friend suggested the use of the prepam-
tion I have named. I took his advice, and the result
was improvement of health, renewed energy, and
that particular relief 1 so much needed and ohtaine 1
Others may be similarly advantaged. If they desire to
be. Truly your friend,

C. H. WILLIAMS,
tested, but without relief. Your Hooflland’s German
Bitters were recommended by persons who had tried
them, and whose favorable mention of the Bitters in
duced me also to try them. I must confess that 1 had-
ah aversion to patent medicines, from the “thousand
and one" quack “Bittere,” whose only aim seems to
oe to palm off sweetened and dragged liquor upon
the community, in a sly way; and the tendency of
which, I fear, is to make many a confirmed drunkard.
Upon learning that yours was really a medicinal
preparation. I took it with happy effect He action
was not only upon the stomach, but upon the ner.
roue system, was prompt and gratifying. I feel that 1
have derived grent and permanent benefit from the
use of a few bottles. Very respectfhUy yonre,
