evening, originated by a number of gentlemen in aid
of a worthy charitable object was attended by a large
and brilliant gathering. The «tanM„g wu A e pt op

moat agreeable manner to all participating. Pecu-
niarly, also, the ball was a complete success, and waa
the means of raising a handsome fund for the pro
posed charity.
The Skidaway Shell Hoad.—The work of grading
the branches of the Skidaway Shell Road leading to
Thunderbolt and Bonaventure has been commenced,
and is now being pushed vigorously forward, under
the supervision of Col. W. B. Pritchard. It will be
seen by a notice in another column that a second in
stallment on the capital stock has been called in.
Auction Sale of Hay.—Messrs. E. E. Hertz k Co
sold auction yesterday 109 bales damaged hay, a
portion of the cargo of the schooner Swan, at SO cents
per 100 pounds.
Foe Norfolk.—The steamer Clarion, which has
been running to Darien, &c\ during the past season,
having been drawn off on account of the uulness of
steamboat business, will leave for Norfolk this morn
ing. The steamer L. Enos, will also leave for Haiti,

If our readers would have a really delicious toile*
luxury we would advise them to use Eac Ahoma-
tique. It is made by the celebrated house of Caswell,
Mack & Co., under the Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York.
It gives a most deliciously clean and cooling taste to
the mouth, keeps the gums hard and healthy, besides
yielding a fine perfume to the breath.

SAVANNAH MARKET.
Remarks.
Friday, May 1,1866.
The fluctuations in the value at gold in New York
having been wider than usual this week, ranging from
25 to 29 prem., the price of Sterling has varied from
day to day, ranging from 29 to 33 prem.; closing at
about 32 for prime Bill*. There is very little Sterling
offering, the indisposition to sell cotton curtailing the
supply of Exchange, both in London and New York;
checks on the latter point are very scarce and have
improved H to a on last week’s rates. We quote S.
Y. sight discount out of doors; in Bank, par;
and for 1 to 3 dya. to y, discount.
Cotton.—Our market has this week exhibited a
quieter feeling then at any time during the season,
with probably smaller sales than have yet been re
ported. This has been caused by the unyielding na
ture of our holders who will not put oat a line of
Middling at under 30c $ lb. - To-day 28c was offered
for Middling and was refused. The advices of next
crop seems to impart confidence to holders which
may be considered undue, when the great quantity to
be received in Europe is to be placed to the debit of
high pr ices, as acting like a ” wet blanket’ ’ on any ad
vance to he expected from there. Still wewould con
sider it a very serious matter the general cry of short
crop, particularly when planters would be benefltted
by giving a better account of their prospects, in order
to obtain the necessary advance.

STRAW TRIMMINGS
AND
FLOWERS,
A fine assortment just received and for sale at whole
sale and retail, by
S. M. GOLDING,
*#4 163 Congrem »t.
Apples.—But little on the market in the hands of
retailers, and are held nominally at $8@10.
Bacon.—The market for the past week hsa been
dull. The supply is fully equal to the demand. We
quote Sides at 17@18c; Shoulders 14^16c, and Hams
at 22 to 25c.
Baooino and Rope.—The market continues dul
and unchanged. We quote Dundee at 32®33c; Gunny
27@30c; Rope 19@20c.
Butter.—The stocks both In New York and this
market are very light. A decline is however looked
for on account of the coming in of the aupply. We
quote from 58@60c, according to quality.
Biscuit.—The market continues well supplied, but
the demand moderate. We have no ohange to note in
prices, and quote soda biscuit at 12c; sugar at 15c; but
ter at 12c; lemon, in boxes, 20c; In bbls 18c; Boston
13c.
Copter.—The market continues well supplied, and
prices vary but little from our last quotations, Rio is
held at 25@27j£; St. Domingo 22X»27c, and Java at
40@45c.
Candles.—The supply continues good with but
little demand. We quote Adamantine at 24(2:26; Hull's
26@27e lb.
Coal—Has slightly advanced In New York market,
but no corresponding advance has taken place here.
All grades are held at from $12 60 to $13 60 by retail,
and by wholesale at from £9@$10.
Coen—Has arrived freely within the past few days
from Baltimore, which has fully supplied the market
for the present, but it will not be sufficient for the de.
mand, as large shipments are being made to the inte
rior. We quote white at $1 80@$1 35 and yellow at
$1 30 from wharf. White la selling from store at
$1 35®$1 40, and yellow about 5c leas; $1 20 is the
price asked for a lot in bulk.
Domestics.—Yarns aro in limited demand at $2 50
per bunch.
Dry Goods.—These participate with other
things in a retrograde scale towards more stability in
prices, and as the influence of the late war disappears,
prices will further doelino until a more firm basis Is
reached. The business for the last week has been
fair, and tfie exhausted state of the country for Dry
Goods does not appear to have been supplied fully.
The fall in the price of Domestic Goods, with the sin
gle exception of Osnabnrgs, has been genoral. The
small supply of 03naburgs on the market, and the
limited production scarcely meets tbe demand, oonse.
quently prices remain without much change, while
yams have been very much reduced in prices. We
quote Cotton Osnaburgs 8 01. 28®30c; Yams No. 8 to
10 ii 50;. Brown Sheatlng, heavy style, $14® 17c
Crown do. >5 do. 16®2dc: Brown do. 4-4 do. 18@25c;
Brown drill 22®30c, Bleached sheeting 12>j®30c.

Flour—Has somewhat advanced in the Northern
markets, and we therefore continue our quotations of
last week, which were a little above the market. Good
Ohio at $9 §0®$10. Good Family $10@$iS; Ordi-
dary $8® $9-
Fruit.—The market continue* well supplied
Oranges have attained a alight advance the poet week,
and arc now held at $7 50®{8 per box, and Lemons
at £6 50®$7 per box.
Gunpowder—Continues as last quoted, $9 60® $10.
Hay.—A cargo of 288 bales Eastern arrived during
tho past week, which ia held at $1 76 in quantity.
Northern is held at $1 50. A lot of 102 bales damaged
Northern was sold yesterday at an average of 50c per
100 lbs. The stock on hand continues ample, although
shipments are being made to the interior.
Lime.—The market, which haa been entirely bare
of this article for some time, has now a stock equal
to local demand. A cargo of 800 bbls. Rockland ar

week. We quote Western kettle-rendered av 18® 19c;
Leaf Lard 22®23c.
Lumber.—Considerable transactions; Millers are
not sawing In a maiketsble manner, which has created
some trouble and confusion.
Mackerel.—The demand is good. We quote No. 1,
In half bbls, $10 25®10 50; No. 2, $9 50®$9 75; No. 3>
$8 75®$9. In kits, No. 1, $2 76; No. 2, $2 50.

Florida at 66®70c, according to quality.
Oats—Have advanced a little in consequence of the
short supply. Holders are asking from store 90@95c.
Oils.—The market is dull, with but few sales. The
stock is good and prices remain firm. We quote lin
seed at $1 60@$1 80 per gallon; whale at $1 95®
$2; sperm at $2 80@$3 10: neatafoot at $2 36; lard at
$2 30®$2 50; kerosene at 85c®$l; train at $1 75,
