We understand that the engine was duly paid for,
and that Mr Jeffers returns to New York on to-mor
row per steamer Herman Livingston. The Steamer

Pic-nic at Me Alprs's Landing.—The pupils of the
Baptist Sunday School held a pic-nic yesterday at Mc-
Aipin’s Landing. The excursionists were conveyed
by the steamer Two Boys which made two trips to the
pic-nic ground at 9 a. m. and 2 p. m., carrying several
hundred persons, old and young, at each trip. A day
of unalloyed enjoyment was spent by the pic-nickers
in the fine old grove at McAlpin’s, and all returned in
safety to the city at about six o’clock.
Gbeen Turtle Soup is announced in another col
umn to be served at the Our House at eleven o’clock
to-day. The many regular patrons of this well-known
establishment will scaroely require any advertisement
to ensure their attendance, but for the benefit of
strangers we make this announcement.
Drowned.—Tlie New York Herald of the 25th ult.
states that a man named Eobert McGowan, a “stow
away” on board the steamship Herman Livingston,
on her last trip hence for New York, was drowned oil
Barnegat by jumping overboard, it is supposed while-
laboring under a temporary doragoment of mind. We
are informed by some of his acquaintacos that the
person alluded to was Robert McKeon, who was for
merly a member of the police in this city.

the striking peculiarities, the many temptations and
privations of seamen, and their claims upon the good

Anderson, Mayor; Aldermen Wylly, Lachlison, One,
Cunningham, Ferrill, Johnson, Souiiard and Mc
Mahon.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and con
firmed.
The information and fine dockets were read and
confirmed.
nEPOBTS BEAD AND ADOPTED.
The Committee on Finance, to whom was referred
the petition of sundry citizens asking Council further
time in which to pay the ground rents on lots where
on over thr A years are due, respectfully report: that
while the finances of the city require all the funds it
can commaud to sustain the municipal credit, yet
your Committee are dispoaed' to grant all the indul
gence possible, and recommend that all persons in
debted to the city for ground rents over due and ex
penses incurred, shall be allowed additional time for
the payment of the same by giving their notes, with
proper and approved security, payable on the first
day of September next, and in failure to comply with
recommendation, the City Marshal shall be instructed
to re-enter and advertise and sell the said lots.

The Finance Committee, to whon) was referred the
petition of H. L- Dsvis, keeper of the powder magazine,
asking that he should receive a salary in lieu of fees,
as heretofore, report adversely to said petition.

The Finance Committee, to whom was referred the
petition of Mr. Isaac Brunner, Clork of the Market,
for an increase of salary, report that in consideration
of the increased duties of hiB office and his efficiency
as an officer, his salary should be increased from
twelve hundred dollars to fifteen hundred dollars per

The Committee on Water Works, to whom was re
ferred the petition of Messrs. H. Brown k Co., asking
for the solo right of watering the streets of the city;
also, for permission to use the water from the city
hydrants for that purpose, respectfully report: that
iu our opinion Council has no authority to grant the
sole right of watering the streets to Messrs. Brown k
Co. We recommend that the petitioners be allowed
the privilege of using the water from the hydrants, on
their making such compensations and conforming
to such regulations as the Commissioners of Water
Works may require. All of which is most respectfully

Hon. E. J. Harden, Corporation Attorney, then made
certain explanations in relation to certain suits being
brought against the city, as well as certain suits of
long standing in the courts brought by the city ;
whereupon Alderman Johnson offered the following
resolution, which waa adopted:
Resolved, That tho said suit brought by the city
against E. L. Hollis, deceased, and bis bondsmen be
dismissed.

Resolved, That the cases now pending against the
city bo referred to the Finance Co-nmittee with power
to employ counsel, if necessary.

ter be allowed a Deputy to assist him in his duties.
Whereupon Alderman Johnson offered tho folio wing
resolution which was adopted unanimously :

a salary of six hundred dollars per annum, and that
au Ordinance bo drawn to allow the salary from the
date of his appointment.
Br. J. J. Waring, Chairman of the several commit
tees of the Board of Health, viz : Committee on Pon-
drette, and on Sewerage and Drainage, adilressed
Council by permission, iu relation to an appropriation
which was necessary for a proper survey of the loca
tion of sewers, privies, Ac. Whereupon Alderman
Souiiard offered the following resolution, which was
adopted :
Resolved, That the sum of two hundred and fifty
dollars be appropriated to the Board of Health, to pay
the expense of making surreys for Sewerage and
Drainage of the city.
A bill was presented to Council for repairs to the
stoop of Jno. W. Anderson, Esq., on South Bfoad
street, caused by an engine badly damaging tho same
returning from a fire. Referred to Fire Committee.
The proposals of the Savannah Gas Light Company
in relation to a new contract, was laid over until next
meeting of Council.
