A N ORDINANCE entitled au Ordinance to alter
and amend an Ordinance to change the manner
of keeping the streets and lane* of the city of Sa-
v innah clean, and to prescribe the duties of the
Superintendent, passed Dec. 29th 1833.
Sec l. Be it ordained by the Mayor and Aldermen
of the city of Savannah, in council assembled, and
it is hereby ordained by the sutho lty of the same.
That irom and after the p ssageof this ordinance,
the work of the Scavenger Department shall no
longer be given out by contract, but shall be carried
on under the direction of a superintendent elected
by Council, and the whole expense of the same shall
be oorne directly by the corporation.
8ec. 2. Be lr. further ordained by the authority
aforesaid, That the City Council, at its next regular
meeting of Council, lti January of every year there
after, sball elect a superintendent, whose salary
shr.il be — per annum, and who sball execute
i bond ro the riy, with good security, in the sum ol
live t liousaud d liars, for the faithful di charge of his
duty, which bond shall be approved by the Mayor;
sui'U superint, ndent to give such bona and lo enter
upon the duties of his office within ten days from the
date of his election, and up--n tai ure to give such
bond or neglecti g to enter upon his duties within
the said time, his election shall be deemed void, and
the Cl y council at its next regular meeting shall
elect some other in his place.
Sec 3. Be it fnrter ordained by the authority afore
said. That it shall be the duty of said superintend
ent upon his eutering office to file a schedule with
the Clerk of Council, of ad the property of the De
partment coining into tiis. posscs-ion : to make all
contracts for the purchase of carta, horses ani utuies
and for the hire of able-bodied men, such as may be
necesrary to periorm the duties of the Department,
as hereinafter described ; all such contracts and en
gagements beit-g first sai-jepc to the approval of
Council, and shall give receipt to the Ci y Marshal

so employed to pass through ail parts of the city

posal of the corporation, aud carried beyond the
1 limits of the citv.
Sec. A Be It further ordained by the authority
i aforesaid. That it shall be the duty of the supertn-
| lender,! to report to the Mayot or Acting Mayor,
j every Monday morning, • the number of hands and
j teams employed in the department, oral the condi-
i tion of the streets, lanes aud squares ; and on every
alarm of Ure it shall tie his duty to repair to the place
of the fire with such of his teams as are not actually
loaded and carrying off the offal at the time of the
alarm being given, aud be subject to the orders of
the Mayor; or the person or persons acting in his
place. ' And for neglecting or failing to perform all
the requirements of tilts ordinance, the said superin
tendent shall, upon conviction before the Mayor, or
che person or persons presiding at the Police Court,
be subiect,to a fu.e of not less than live do Jars not

ol all the buildings belonging to the cby and attached
, tu the Pound, and shall use the stables for keeping
i the mules or horses engaged In the scavenger De-
! pjrtmfent, and shall keep the same In good repair.
- And it shall luriher be his duty to be at the said
Pound, or have some ageni there, at two stated hours
: each nay, when cattle or other animals are within,
j lor the puipose ol delivering said cattle or o'her ani-
nutls to their owners when called fur. And, further,
he shall well and truly pay all moneys collected for
thus delivering up cattle or other anltuais, to the
Ci-y .Marshal—the money allowed by ordinance for
r- eutng cattle or other animals impounded being ex
cepted.
