• Sekiocs Riot Neab Alexanpbia, Va.—The Alexan
dria Gazette, of Monday, furnishes the following :
About one hundred male persons, white and black,
between the ages of ten and twenty-two years, from
this city, met about one hundred and fifty of the
same clues iroin Washington yesterday evening at four
mue run, and fought on the causeway at that point
their usual Sunday's battle. Upon this occasion, in
addition to the slings which have of late been used in
their engagement with stunning effect, pistols and
g.m* were more freely employed than heretofore, and
with mure telling results. As usual, the Alexandri
ans, though outnumbered, drove the Washingtonians
f otu their positions and remained masters of the
held. The casualties among the Alexandrians amounted
to one seriously wouuded iu the eye, and two slightly
injured by buck shot. One Washingtonian was mor
tally wounded, and three or four were slightly injured
by gun-shot wounds.
Major Lee, Superintendent of the Freedmen’s
Bureau at this city, rode to the ground before the
fight, bur was unable to prevent the commencement
oi hostilities. He then rode to the Convalescent
camp, and, procuring a reinforcement of colored
troops, sent, l»y a detour, a detachment to the long
bridge, and with the rest made for the scene of con
flict.
About fifty of tho combatants, including • the
Washingtonians, were overhauled and brought to this
city, some on account of their small size, were re
leased by Major Lee, but ihirty-niue were turned
over to Justice Colton, who committed them to jail.
Those who could give bail to appear this morning
were rti. asesl upon tha payment of the legitimate jail
tee, amounting to ilfty cents, and the rest were con-
tiued to await their trial, which is to take place to
morrow morning* Six more of the belligerents were
arrested this morning and confined in the jail. The
friends of many of the persons' from' Washington
visited this city this morning to proccrc their release,
and many visitors were at the jail.

Losses of the South.
To Messrs. Hudson d Whitjleld, Editors Mail :
Gentlemen : I observe in your issue this morning
an article abstracted from some paper (nut designated)
iu which it is stated that Commodore Maury, in a let
ter to the London Morning Herald, estimates Southern
fosses during the war at the extraordinary total of
seven bihions of dollars. Any expression of opinion
of deliberate statement made by this distinguished
man, deserves great consideration, and one should
hesitate to venture on even a partial dissent from hir
views ; but 1 respectfully submit that he has fallen
incautiously into a grave error in the matter of this
particular statement.
The amount of losses as exhibited by him charges
iu its first item-a Toss of three billions of money on
emancipated slayes ? Is not this evidently too high—
is it not nearly or quite fifty percent, above the actual
damages'? In.all the Southern States before the war
there were about three millions and a half slaves ;
and an average price of five hundred dollars each for
these slaves, men, women and children, taken -to
gether, would exceed their thou value. But if we
suppose three millions and a half slave* to have been
worth five hundred dollars each, their aggregate value
would produce the sura of one billion seven hundred
and fifty millions of dollars. In the next item Com-
mudore Maury ppls down the sum of two billions of
dollars for expenses of the war, independently of pri
vate spoliations and losses'. In other words, he esti
mates the public debt of tho Confederate States and
of the several states at this large figure.
We know on the contrary thut the nominal valne of
this debt on its face and its real value in gold were
two distinct propositions The paper estimate of the
debt and the gold value (by which it must, if paid,
have been ultimately tested and measured) were vastly
disproportioned in relation to each other. It is not
quite safe to set the sum of six hundred millions of
dollars in gold against ail the possible losses incurred
by the public debt ol the Confederate States and of
each separate State ? The destruction of private pro. 1
perty appeals iu Commodore Maury's statement in
an item of one million of dollars; too high, as it’ap
pears to me from.all the information I,can obtain, by
at least 25 per cent. The last item in tho account is
ten millions of dollars per annum—or fifty.millions of
dollars for five years—as additional taxation for the
payment of the Federal War debt; this sum being cal
culated as the result, at six per cent, interest dn one
billion of dollars. Hut should these fifty millions of
duliars as interest, and one hillion as principal, be
charged as a dead loss to the Southern States, when
the tax goes into the Federal Treasury to be partially
expended on the Southern States in the administra
tion of the government ? I should, therefore rather
slate the account thus: *
By Emancipation,. .$1,700,080,000
Expenses of Ihe war- 600,000,000
Destruction of private property 700,000,000
Additional Federal taxation 600,000,000

Do not these figures present a terrible arriy, with
out magnifying them ia tha least? In the whole his
tory of war such au immense loss has never been so
suddenly and completely suffered by a country con
taining not more than six millions of people, respon
sible lor government and property- Indeed, I can
recall no instance in any history where a country of
the largest wealth and population has been subjected
to so tremendous a shock. Never has it happened be-
lore, I believe, in ihe world’s annals, that aay people
have been required to Submit, between therisiuVund
going down of the sun, to the utter extraction of
seventeen hundred .millions of property, and to the
violent extirpation at the same moment o’f an ancient
institution, reaching the hearths, and hearts, and
comforts, and the social and political interest Of al
most every inhabitant ra the land. : and I trust it will
uot be vainglorious to assert in this connection, that
no people in any country have ever waged war more
heroically for leal or supposed rights, ordiave raani-
lested more patiehce, fortitude and wisdom, under
extreme reverses, than- tho people of'the Southern
Suites have done.
