(The following poem was written by an Irish weaver
named John Frazer, a man of but little education, but
one who had tha Ma feeling at his heart:]
l to ask me why
11 should not die.
■ my reply
TO your throngs—
To my corn beneath the hoof.
To toe flame-flag from the roof;
Do yon want more maddening proof
Of my wrongs?
Honest men before my eyes
Have been tortured into lies.
And ye bought from perjured spies
* Priceless blood ?
Yc corrupted and debased,
Ye inveighled, trapped and chased,
Ye o’er€wept deformed, defaced—
Like a flood.
The loftiest—or the least—
In toe fight—or when it ceased—
ThA fejr virgin—or the priest—
Did ye spare ?
Till now by force and fraud,
Human feeling ia outlawed.
And oppression stalks abroad.
Bold and bare.
Te plunderers of our plains,
Ye exhausters of our veins,
Ye flrers of our fanes,
If /be
For resistance, when he trod
Flesh and spirit as the clod—
A dark felon before God,
What are ye ?
If Borne tyrant’s blood I spilt,
On the tyrant is the guilt.
I met him hilt to hilt
For my own;
And—free me from this chain,
I will defy you thus again—
Tho’ ye gild with cannon train.
Me alone.
It may by Heaven be meant
That oppressors should relent;
But not th’ oppressed repent.
Of the few
Brave deeds of heart and hand
They can do to lift their laud
From the grovelling to the grand.
Up anew.
And this persisting zeal
Which all trampled men must feel.
Will defy your fire and steel
Till ye yield
The plunder ye have gained.
And the captives ye have chained,
To a host—perchance untrained
To the field.

afternoon on the steamer, were mistaken for Fenians
on their way to Cauada by the Irish citizens of West
Troy. The latter lined the river banks, hurrahed the

Decided by the Supreme Court at Milledgeville, Ga.,
June Term, 1866.
Hill vs. DeLsnuay.—In this case the legality of the
levy might be inquired into on motion, and an affida
vit of illegality was unnecessary.
Gresham vs. DeLauuay.—Garnishment could not
issue on the 24th ol March, I860, upon affidavit made
before a Justice of the Inferior Court, the 2d clause of
section 287 of the Code having been repealed by an
act approved March 17th, 1866. Judgment reversed.
Collirim A Black vs. Soanlon.—That complainant, on
a certain day, called on defendant and offered to pay
him what the amount of principal and interest on the
note in Confederate money would have been worth in
specie at the maturity of the note, upon condition
that the defendant would make titles, Ac., is nota suffi
cient allegation of tender. Judgment reversed.
Hood A Robinson vs. Ware.—The plaintiffs, as a
copartnership iu the practice of law, sued the defend
ant for a fee.
1st. The evidence of their employment was, that the
answer of tho defendant to an action of divorce brought
against him by his wife, was in the hand writing of
one of the plaintiffs, and was signed by them, in con
nection with other counsel, as his attorneys; and that
the affidavit to the truth of the answer which was
sworn to by the defendant before the Clerk, was in the
same hand-writing. Held: That the evidence was suf
ficient to establish their employment by the delend-
2d. The evidence was that the value of their services
was $150 or $200, but the verdict of the jury gave
them only $25. Held: That the verdict was contrary
to evidence, and that a new trial should be granted.
Judginent reversed.
Roll rs. the City Council of Augusta.—The City
Council of Augusta is not liable to an action for dam
ages done to real estate in said city by changes made
in the grading the streets, Ac. Judgment affirmed.
Tbf. Tax os Cotton.—A petition was presented in
the Senate on Thursday by Senator Morgan, signed by
a number of ex-officers ol the Federal army now in
Alabama. The petitioners say they are from the
Northern States, many of them cx-offlcers of the
Union army, and always loyal to the Government of
the United States. That 3,000 out of 5,000 of their
class are engaged in the cultivation of cotton. They
have encountered peculiar difficulties in accustoming
the freedmen to a new system of labor, etc., and they
now see with alarm the result of their labors threat
ened by an overwhelming increase of taxation, an ad
dition of one hundred and fifty per cent, on the basis
ot which their labors were begun; that a tax of live
cents per pound on cotton will make the raising of
that staple no longer remunerative. Accompanying
this petition is a letter from Lieut CoL A. L. Gurney,
late of Second New York Veteran Cavalry, who con
firms the above statements, and adds, that from the
large number of these men engaging in the business,
many Southern men were encouraged to resume the
cultivation of their plantations, and the new enter
prise of cultivating Cotton with free labor has thus tar
been a success. According as Northern men have
more or less engaged In that business in each com
munity, he finds they cannot got their cotton into
market for less than twenty cents per pound, and to

JAKES STEWART,
Clerk of Council
Thieves Stuucx jot Lightning —A Fort Leaven
worth correspondent of the Columbus (Ohio) Journal
writes:
A peculiar freak of nature occurred here on the 16 th
niLt'our men who had been committing some crime,
tor which crime warrants ware Issued fo* their arrest,
and the proper civil authorities were in pursuit of
sought refuge under a large tree between here and the
city, prooably half a mile from the fort, to protect
them from toe rain,, as it was raining very rapidly and
uneommoidy stormy, and such storms as are only
known in Kansas—wind blowing with terrible fury
and ram coming down in .torrents, thundering and
nglnmng -as though the clerk of the'weather was on
a bust ” Well, as we may eay, by an interposition of
Providence, these men were struck by lightning, and
ot course, instantly killed; but strange to say, that al
though every man was killed of the four, not a sign of
el « ctri0 fl °ld was visible oh the tree.
Tlieir bodies (toe men) were as black as coal, and two
ol them hornbly mutilated; the ground was ioru up
lor several leetmronnd the tree, but it remained uu-
touched. At the same time several houses were struck
in toe city, but no damage done save toe demolition of
a few chimneys.
General Fitzhugh Lee.—We have just seen an ar
ticle strongly praising Major General Fitzhugh Lee
eon of General Robert E. Lee. Host hearts? do we
endorse everything said in favor of tost officer, ex-
cepting his participation in the rebellion. It is very
nttle that he wae the handsomest officer in the South-
cm armies, but it is very much that he noMened nn.
surpassed miliUry skill and ISencefTd noble:
ness of feeling. We were hie guest in bis hum
ble tent, bpea fo the winds ot winter bJtX some
loosely mtertwinrtl pine boughs, yet his hospitality
all unobtrusive end -unostentatious, was worth* of «
