akrest of a Mysterious Character.—About half
p»5t eleven o'clock last night, three pistol shots were
beard in quick succession in the direction of the
Methodist Church on St. James’ Square. On repair
ing to the spot our reporter learned that the shots had
been fired by a policeman at a man who gives his
name as John Corcoran, under the following circum
stances. Early in the evening the man, who is a
stranger in the city, had been observed lurking about
.n the vicinity of the church. A little after eleven
o’clock he was seen by a negro man tohoiBtoneof
the windows of the Church on York street and enter
rebuilding. The negro reported the fact to the po-
i.et man on duly in the ward, who proceeded to inves-
t aatc the matter. Approaching the window by
which the man had entered, ho demanded of the
i!'.ruder what he was doing there, whereupon
Corcoran jumped from another whplow and at
tempted to escape up Jefferson street, when the po
licemen gave pursuit and fired three shots before he
was enabled to arrest the fugitive. Neither of the
shots took effect. The stranger was taken to the bar
racks, but refuses to give any account of himself or
state what his purpose was in entering the church. As
there is nothing in the church to tempt a thief, it is
supposed that his intention was to fire the building.
He will have a hearing before the Mayor this morn
ing.
Tsu Mammoth Beeves.—The smaller of the pair o
smmmoth beef oxen, imported by Col. Thos. F. St«-
vea=, was slaughtered on Thursday evening and de
livered to customers at stall No. 5 in the market yes
terday morning. It was a lucky Friday tor those who
were able to obtain any of the beef, as we can testify,
titer examination of some splendid sirloin and ten
derloin, broiling and roasting pieces, than which we
have seldom seen fluer, for which we are indebted to
C L Stevens’ liberality. The ox weighed one thoua-
sn l six hundred and sixty pounds as he stood, and
w.thin a trifle of one thousand pounds dressed. The
taue, weighing one thousand seven hundred and ten
pounds, will be killed probably on Monday night, and
ready for delivery Tuesday morning. Any information
can be obtained of Mr. Bruner, Clerk of the market.
Muferiob Court.—The Grand Jury 'found true

which the court was adjourned until next Monday 'at

Cotton.—The Brokers’ Circular aays: “The cotton
market, after a long period of depression, has at length
assumed a muck stronger position, and during the
last three days a large business has been done at ad
vancing prices. On Saturday the demand revived
upon advices of large shipments of gold from the
United States and of reduced receipts and exports; but
cu Monday the disposition evident on the part of
buyers to act freely was materially checked by appre
hensions of further financial difficulties being caused
by the suspension of the Consolidated Bank.
Ou Tuesday considerable purchases were made. On
Wednesday the sales were unusually extensive, and on
Thursday, with a large*business, the market closed
with firmness, and tne quotations show a general ad
vance upon last week’s rates. American, after a de
cline of Id. on Friday, has been in active request from
all classes of buyers, ^nd is much less freely
offered. An advance of 1 a l>£d. ^ lb. has been gene
