.:. first offender called was James Porter, a rough,

fir.kinit witness, a colored man, without provocation;

About: eleven o’clock yesterday morning Abbott

i, gaged in conversation with her upon the rtbopof the
‘“‘" J when the younger brother, Edward W.,Barn-
tepped up, add bade the young woman sod Ab
bott good morning. He then told Abbott he would
Mira to see Mm for a moment, whereupon Abbott went
down the steps and accompanied him about ten or fif
teen yards, when the report of a pistol was beard.
Persons in the vicinity who heard the report oif the
pistol immediately hastened to the spot, and found
Abbott lying on his back on the spot where he was
seen to fall. On examination it was found that the
ball had taken effect immediately over the right eye,
penetrating the skull, and a portion of the brain Was
oozing out through the wound. Abbott was, shortly
after the occurrence, placed in a wagon by Lieutenant
Howard, of the police, assisted by several citizens, and
conveyed to his boarding house, where he now lies in
sensible, there being no prospect whatever of his re
covery.
Barnwell, who committed the Let, was arrested
about twenty minutes after the shooting by Sergeant
Greiner, of the police, to whom he stated that he de~
aired to give himself up to the authorities. The
younger brother waa arrested by Charles J. White,
City Sheriff, and hie deputy, Isaac Bussell. Both
prisoners were taken to the police barracks, where
(hey remained only a Bhort time when they were com
mitted^ to jail under a warrant issued by Justices
Phillip M. Bussell and Levi S. Hart, J. H. C. Baruwell,
ae principal, and E. W. Barnwell, as accessory- Th 0
pistol with which the deed was committed waB taken
possion of by Lieutenant Howard, also a dirk knife,
found on the person of Abbott.
The parties in this melancholy affair are all from
Effingham county. The young men were known to
have been at variance for some time, but no one an
ticipated so serious a result. Tho occurrence created
quite an excitement in the neighborhood where it
took place.
P. 9.—Abbott, after lingering in extreme, agony
since eleven o’clock in the morning, expired at ten
minutes past nine o'clock last night. The. deceased
formerly worked at one of the saw mills across the
river. The Bamwells worked at the Central Eailroad
in the capacity of laborers. Coroner Eden will hold
an inquest npon the body at hall-past nine o’clock this
morning.

Augusta Market.
Augusta, Saturday, June 16.
Rexabes —Business, though partaking of the stag
nation incident to snmmer, is better than usual for
the season. It is expected that the receipts of the
wheat crop, which is now ready for market, will im
prove business for the next few week*. The extraor
dinary advance in gold daring the last few days has
unsettled prices, and all quotations are irregular and
nominal. We give a fair statement of prices prevail
ing to-day, but there are many who refuse to sell at
our figures. Reports from the growing crops in this
vicinity are more favorable.
Middling 31@—
Strict Middling 3-2<g,33
Good Middling ....34(^35
There has been no material change during the cur
rent week, the market being perhaps a shade lower
np to the advices from Europe today, since which no
sales have been reported, and we omit quotations.
