GROWING OLD.
BT A8BURT.
Good wife, your hair is streaked with gray;
I look into your face to-day;
Your fading features plainly say
You're growing old.
How short to me the time appears
Since, with conflicting hopes and fears,
I'nto the lass of twenty years
My love I told.
Bat vears have passed with rapid flight,
And touch of time has altered quite
The lovely form, and dimmed the light
Of lustrous eyes.
You’ve lost the beauty and the grace
Of younger days, but still I trace
The old expression in your face
Which most I prize.
Though now I find you not, my true,
The likely lass which once I knew,
That which 1 sought to win from von.
In girlhood's prime.
The true-love countenance expression.
Which was the maiden-heart’s confession,
You keep in virtuous possession,
Despite of time.
Good wife, your hair is streaked with grey,
Your girlhood's bloom has passed away;
You look at me, and smiling, say:
I, too, am changed.
My likeness in the glass I see,
Aiid own, good wife, you’re up with me;
We both are growing old, but we
Are not estranged.
We both have left our youth behind;
The bloom is gone; but never mind,
We’re wiser, and our love, we find,
Has purer grown.
We, erst the bridegroom and the bride,
No longer young, sit side by side;
We've kept our trdth; our hearts, well tried,
Still beat as one.

THREE WORDS OF STRENGTH.
[Translated from the German of Schiller.]
There are three lessons I would write—
Three words as with a burning pen—
In tracings of eternal light
Upon the hearts of men.
Have hope. Though clouds environ now,
And gladness hide her face in scorn,
Put then the shadow from thy brow;
No night but hath its morn.
Have faith. Wherever thy bark is driven—
Thd calm’s disport, the tempest's mirth—
Know this: God rules the host of heaven—
The inhabitants of earth.
Have love; and not alone for one,
But man, as man, thy brother call,
And scatter, like the circling sun,
Thy charitities on'all.
Thus grave these lessons on thy soul—
Hope, faith and love; and thou shalt find
Strength when life’s surges cease to roll,
Light, where thou else wert blind.
Brutal Murders near Baltimore—An Old Man
and his Grandson Butchered.—Yesterday’s Balti
more Sun says :•
Yesterday the residents of Elkridge Landing and
vicinity were in a high state of excitement over the
perpetration of a shocking murder, committed at Pa-
tapsco bridge, within a half mile of the Relay House,
on the Washington turnpike road. The victim was
an aged man named David H. White, seventy-six
i old, for nearly half a century familiar as a toll-
* geper on the Washington turnpike, within a
kof the city. On Sunday night, about a quar-
fcn o’clock, Mr. White was about retiring for
with his family, when, hearing a noise in
Sr where his chickens were kept, he went out
•nt door to the road to discover the cause of the
He was immediately struck with a club, and,
shrinking murder. l'elL His married daughter, Mrs.
Susan Mooney, ran down With her little son, Alexan
der Mooney, aged about nine years, both of whom
were struck senseless by the murderers. The villains
then searched the bodies of their victims, getting but
a small amount. The only thiug missed from the
house was a package of fifty coppers. Mrs. Mooney
came to her senses in a short time, and crying mur
der several times, some of the neighbors were at
tracted to the spot. On examination Mr. White was
tound to be dead, the back part of his skull having
been crushed in. Mrs. Mooney’s injuries were se
vere, but not dangerous, the left side of her head
having been badly bruised by a club. The little
child’s injuries are more serious, and yesterday it was
feared congestion of the brain had supervened, and
his case would result fatally. The body of the grand
father and the mother and son were removed to the
iiouse, and medical attendance summoned.
Four heavy pieces of white oak, each about four feet
long and two inches in diameter, were produced be
fore the coroner’s jury, one of them being marked
with the gray hair and blood of the murdered man.
it is believed that revenge and not robbery was the
cause of the murder, the people in the neighborhood
being much incensed against* the toll-keeper because
they had to pay him lor travelling over a very bad
and very indifferent road.
There are as many roads to flame and fortune as
there were gateways to ancient Thebes. Your am
bitious warrior is for carrying his way with the
sabre; your aspiring politician for scheming his way
by intrigue and consummate art. But there is one
grand broad path to the goal, along which nothing
base can travel. It is the path set apart for the
march of talent, energy, and nehle purpose an
though fall of obstacles, it contains none that a brave
man cannot surmount. This fact has been exemplified
n innumerable instances, bat in few more«forcibly

has been onward and upward, scattering blessings at

Thf. Power of Cvphf.be.—The enlightened man
may have a clear understanding of thousands, and
even millions; but much beyond that he can form no
distinct idea. A simple example, and one easily
solved, will illustrate the observation, if all the vast
bodies of water that cover nearly three-fourfhs of the
globe were emptied, drop by drop, into one grand
reservoir, the whole number of drops could be writ
ten by two words, "eighteen sectillions, ” and ex
pressed tn figures by annexing twenty-four cyphers to
the number eighteen, (18,090,WO.OOlJ,600,000,000,000,-
!*oo.) Man might as well attempt to explore the bounds
ut eternity as to form any rational idea of the units
embodied iu the expression above; for although the
aggregate of drops is indicated by figures in the space
ot only one inch and a half in ordinary print, yet, it
•-ach particular drop were noted by a separate stroke
like the figure 1, it would form a line of marks suffi
ciently long to wind round the sun six thousand bil
lions of times!
Now, observe, if you please, the marvelous power
■ r value which the cyphers, insignificant by them
reive-, give the significant figures 18. The young
reader will be surprised to learn that the use of the
cypher to determine the value of any particular figure,
which is now practiced by every schoolboy, was un
it sown to the ancients. Therefore, among the Greeks

Dakk Side of Fenianism.—The dark side of the
Ft man picture is now coming to view. In Canada the
trial oi the Fenian prisoners will soon occur, and there
is cau«e to apprehend that the unfortunate men will
be severely dealt with. The press and the people of
Canada art clamorous for the hanging of the prisoners,
and u is not unlikely that a part of them, at least, will
suffer the extreme penalty of the law. But the mis
fortunes of the Fenian movement are not confined to
xh»- men who are now lying In Canadian prisons await
ing trial for their lives. Their friends in the United
States, and the friends of those who were killed in the
1 urt Erie raid, are plunged into sorrow and mourn
ing. There is a much larger class, however, who are
sensibly affected by the failure of the movement.
There are thousands of patriotic Irishmen who con
tributed all the money they could scrape together, to
the Feniau fund, while Borne of them went so far as t(\
•ell their homesteads and convert the savings of yeajs
into bonds of the Irish Republic. In yesterday’s Sun
we published three or four instances of the latter hind,
which occurred in Brooklyn, and no doubt there axe a
great mauv kindred experiences. It is to be regretted
that this suffering and loss should be entailed upon
patriotic and confiding men, but at the same time it ia
fortunate that the case is no worse. If our Govern
iuent had been less prompt iu enforcing the neutrality
laws, the evil consequences of the invasion might have
assumed far greater proportions.—New Y</rk Sun.

Shocking Wife Mcrdeb—A Widow in the Case.—
A man by the name of Fox not long ago married a
young girl by the name of Ashley, near Tunbridge,
Vermunt. They had some trouble and parted. He be
came enamored of a young widow, and, it seems, was
anxious to get rid of bis wife. He saw her, and per
suaded her to meet him in an old barn on a farm
where there was no one living, on pretence of making
up and living with her again. She met him there, and
the next morning the barn was a heap of ashes, and
her haif-consumed body was found, with sufficient
marks of violence still to be seen upon her head to
show b-youd question that Bhe was murdered. Her
lower limbs were burned off, but her body was not
consumed. Her skull was fractured, evidently by a
heavy blow. The murderer is now in prison.
The Fheedmen in Gbiftin.—The Herald says the
ireedmen of Griffin and vicinity, held a meeting near
the city, on Tuesday, 12th inst., the object of which
was to elect delegates to the Augusta Convention.
Their object is to send a representative to Washington
in the interests of the freedmen. We further learn
that George Pitts and Henderson Beck, were elected
by the Griffin freedmen—both (town on the Bureau,
and in their speeches on the occasion, expressed thern-
selvts thoroughly disgusted with that institution.
Preparatory to the main business of the day, the
ireedmen—both sexes largely represented—marched
m procession through several streets of the city and
oh arriving at the place of meeting, first partook of a
oounuful supply of edibles, an indispensable prelude
to the performances.
