which will require eleven year* for its complete exe

will only require air shafts in a few places, in fact only
four. The southern entrance of the paasage will be
about 3,700 leet above the level of the sea, and the
northern exit very nearly the same. The horizontal
position of the line will be about one-thlrdof its en

that gradient is surpassed special ones will have to be

Truth Criashed to Barth Shall Rfse~
Agtftn.
Once this soft turf, this rivnlet's sands,
Were trampled by a hurrying crowd.
And fiery hearts and armed bands
Encountered in the battle-cloud.
Ah! never shall the land forget
How gush’d the ttfb-blood of her brave—
Gushed with hope and courage, yet.
Upon the soil they sought to save.
Now all is calm, and fresh, and still,
Alone the chin 1 °f flitting bird,
And talk of children on the hill.
And hell of wandering kine are heard.
No solemn host goes trailing by
The black-mouth'd gun and staggering wain;
Mcu start not at the battle-cry;
OI be it never heard again.
Soon rested those who fought; but thou,
Who mtnglest in the harder strife
For truths which men receive not now,
Thy warfare only ends with life.
A friendless warfare I lingering long
Through weary day and weary year,
A wild aud many weapon’d throng
Hang on thy front and flauk and rear.
Yet, nerve thy spirit to the proof.
And blanch not at thy chosen lot,
The timid good may stand aloof,
The sage may frown—yet faint thou not.
Nor heed the shaft too surely cast,
lbe hissing, stinging bolt of scorn;
For with their side shall dwell, at last,
The victory of endurance born.
Truth, crushed to earth, shall rise again,
The eternal years of God are hers;
But error, wounded, writhes with pain,
And dies among his worshipper*.
Yes. though thou lie upon the dust,
When they who help’d thee flee in fear.
Die full of hope and manly trust.
Like those who fell in battle here.
Another hand thy sword shall wield,
Another hand thy standard wave,
Till from the trumpet’s mouth Is peal’d
The blast of triumph o'er thy grave.

Richmond .Merchants Beaten and Plun
dered at City Point.
List Thursday and Friday nights City Point was the
scene of deeds' of violence and rapine which de
mand. and we feel sure will receive an immediate
investigation at the hands of the military au
thorities.
It lias, since the close of the war, been the practice
i >me of the store keepers of this city to visit City
ut whenever any considerable number of troops
has been paid off there for the purpose of selling them
such goods as are usually sought after by soldiers.—
These merchants generally provide themselves with
tbe lawful licenses, and in addition procure a permit
from the United states military authorities. During
the past week a considerable amount of money haviug
been or being about to be paid to the troops at the
Point, a number of merchants repaired thither for
purposes of traffic. Without any premonition or
notice, about eleven o'clock ou Thursday night the
s'ores of Messrs. Joseph Hershberg, N. B. Bear, —
Gnu, J. Greenwald, E. Falk and Jacob Greenhood
were broken into by bands of soldiers, the owners
brutally beaten and their goods seized and carried off
or destroyed. Mr. Bear's place was broken into
simultaneously in front and at the side by twenty-
seven soldiers. Some one in the store, believed to be
Mr. Bear, fired a pistol, the bullet from which took
eflcct in one of the soldiers, when Mr. Bear, Mr.
Hershberg and Mr. Grau were seized aud droadfuUy
beaten and subsequently hurried to the guard-house
and their goods left at the mercy of the soldiery. AU
of Mr. Bear's stock, valued at eight thousand dollars,
was stolen or destroyed. After the shooting of the
soldier some of the officer- are reported to have en
couraged their men in the pillage. Messrs. Bear,
Hershberg and C.rau while iu the guard-house were
stripped of everything oi value about them, aud theu
violently dragged about the- room, and Mr. Bear was
choked almost to death.
Tne next attack waa made by the soldiers upon the
establishment of Mr. Greeuwald, an old gentleman,
whom they beat ou the head with their muskets, and
robbed of two cases oi goods and everything of value
ab ut Ins person. His clerk, Mr. Greenhood, was
st-bbed in the head with a bayonet and robbed.
Mr. E. Falk wa> robbed of several gold and silver
watches, all of his money aud some of his clothes.
This night was hideous indeed at the Point, a per
fect rcigr. ot t- rror prevailed, and there was no one to
whom the robbed aud terrified citizens could appeal
sneer s-fully for protection.
Tuc u-xt evening (Friday), about 2 P. M., as Mr.
William i'leggenheimer was going to the quarters of
the post sutler, for whom he had some pistols, while
in e mpany with Mr. Cohen aud Mr. W. Jacobs, was
set upon bv seven white soldiers, beaten over tbe
head with shoes, knocked down and robbed of his car
pet-bag. containing five watches, three pistols aud a
lot i •• (xx-ket-books. Mr. Fleggenheimer pursued the
robbers to their quarters, aud identifying the ring
leader . Lieutenant Lawson bad him arrested, to be,
liowner, soon after released by another officer.
Tiiere were over fifty witnesses to the outrage upon
Mr. Fieggeuheimer.
As we said before, we hope the military authorities
will at once, while all the witnesses and sufferers can
be easily produced, have a formal and regular inves
tigation oi the disgraceful occurrences of which the
above is a mild statement. Such an investigation,
with just punishment of the gtulty, is due not only to
the citizens who have suffered, but to the honor and
credit of the army and the Government,

"Gentlemen:—I have no platform upon which to

a traitor; if Awards the radicals, I am called a rebel;
therefore, I must be content to remain on the fence. I

Gentlemen:—Having stated it verbally to yon, I

GentlemenI have recently been laboring under

them, and whose favorable mention of the Ritters in

an aversion to patent medicines, from tbe “thousand
