Georgia State Bo*in»*» ulrectoi*)'.
We have had the opportunity of carefully
examining the “Georgia State Business Di
rectory,” which is now ready for the press. :
and icel justified in cordially recommending
it. The work will include city directories of
Savannah, Augusta, Macon and Columbus:
a general business directory of each couDty
iu the State : a complete synopsis of the In
ternal Revenue Law; the names of all the
Masonic Lodges throughout the State, and of
ficers thereof; a complete list of all the
county officers iu the Slate, cerlified by II
J. G. Williams, Secretary of the Executive
Department : the names of all the lawyers,
physicians, colleges, churches and their pas
tors, municipal authorities, aad various other
matters. There will be included in the work
a beautiful colored map of the State. The
maimer in which our businessmen have pat
ronised the work gives promise of great suc
cess, and the business men throughout the
State have given liberal patronage to the
work. We know of no better medium for
reaching the public generally.
The publisher intends to publish five thous
and copies of this work. We have no doubt
from the merits of the book that the real cir
culation will be about ten or fifteen thousand
copies. It wilL contain about one thousand
pages, octavo, and will be ready for delivery
to the public about the middle of August.
Monstrous.—Harpin's Weekly has another
picture this week, entitled “Why he Can’t
Sleep," in which the ghosts and skeletons of
dead soldiers are made to perform a con
spicuous part in torturing the prisoner of
State in Fortress Monroe. These indecent
expedients of malignant hate incite in the
minds of Southerners only sentiments of dis-
gu.t and contempt tor their authors. At the
North they no doubt serve to intensify the
feeling of hatred against the helpless captive.
Such unreasoning appeals t0 the vindictive
m , and appear with

At a meeting of the passengers ou board the Ban

To Capt. J. Atkins—The passengers on board your

which yonr uniform courtesy has inspired.
We could have wished for nothing that has not
been ready to contribute to our comfort ami enjoy

from your whole bearing that we were In the hands
of a true Bailor, fit to command such a ship as the

It is rarely the case those who asiembled as stran

we feel that to yourself aud yonr officers nothing less
is due than the friendship which courtesy, kindness,

Great dullness has pervaded every branch of busi
ness during the week, attributed iu a mt-asure to the
oppressive heat. Many large operators in consequence
have left the city for their summer retreats. We do
not look for auy great improvement in the “ fleecy
staple" until financial affairs regulate themselves at tho
other side of the Atlantic on a firm basis; credit and
confidence re-established, would at once move the
wheels of trade, and cause cottou, with the lights be
fore us, to be eagerly sought after as the cheapest ar
ticle for speculation or investment. This is well un
derstood here, as well as in England, and will aid to
prevent any great shrinking in the present valuation
of the article, even during the existing dullness, ruo
accountu from the South regarding the “ crop" aie still
discouraging.
