SAVANNAH, WEDNESDAY. JULY *. 1«6.
THB WIFE’S TREASON.
BY ABTHUR j- MCNBY, M. A.
assssnsss-
I mw the cedar branches move.
And two dark shadows, one of a man.
Certainly crossed the lawn be „ an
^VV hell ttmch«n her wa^fatili and the curtains drawn.
At last 1-4^««>“°SgTove.
And seek the open air of the sea, .
Where the bine waves gallop against the shm .,
.Tust as tue heart of a man set free.
Bounds towards the steadfast things of yore
We went; for she did spy my drift ;
She only saw that down by the sea
There would be many a chance and shift,
And many a chance of escape from me.
But I was ’ware of a certain walk.
Close to the edge of the cliffs bo tall,
Where ledges aud lumps of the crafty chalk
Break off to the deep, that swallows them an.
We walked there once, and not in vain;
For ever so long it had not slid,
But the rock was loosened nowby Min, Itdjd
And I thought it would slide that day.
So she wont down with 'V.'ihsolvinK me
And the coroner s T m b t towar d home,
1 SMSf.SK m the eni should be. .
I had not long to wait for him ;
He came, with malice shut up in his eye,
With his tongue so trite and his sulile so trim,
And gave me comfort, and gave me sigha.
But when I went with him back to the train—
Just as a friend should do, you know
Wo talked the sad tale over again;
And whether I let hia damp hand go
A littlo too sharply, who can tell ?
But down with a ghastly groan and grim.
Under the grinding wheels he Calls!
And the train went over him, liinb by limn.
As I drove home that glorious night, *
I did not laugh; for, you see, my groom
■Was Bitting behiud with his face so white;
And bo could tell tales to the housemaid's room.
But I gave mv leader the lightest touch
Of a whip that would hardly bear control,
And X whistled a few sweet bars—not—much—
Of the merry tune that tilled my soul.
Ah well! The work of my life is done;
But I should be rather glad, d'ye know,
To get away from the shining sun.
And hide my triumph beneath my woe.

A pplication having been made
< ■ ■ —
IN GENERAL.
—New developments are coming to liglft in
connection with the Memphis swindle. It
appears that $700,000 or $800,000, which was
sent to Carleton some time during the close
of last year for disposal on account of the
Government, have also been embezzled and
employed in cotton speculation. The whole
matter is to be investigated in a day or two
by the Banking aud Currency Committee.
—Liudsley, the clergyman at Medina who
■whipped h ; ,9 child to death because he would
not say ids prayers, and who was released
on Sid,000 bail, immediately upon beiug set
at liberty went, to the house of his brother-
in-law to stay, but was not allowed to do so,
the brother-in-law tearing that his house
would be torn down by an excited mob, and
the miserable man has again taken up his
quarters iu the jail at Albion, this time volun
tarily, but really to escape summary punish
ment at the hands of an infuriated and in
dignant public.
—Mr. Fechter has introduced a new
French touch on the London stage. For ex
ample, when some one suggests that his
brother is dead, he is momentarily startled
by the suggestion. Then he recovers him
self, and just as he does so he touches his fore
head with the back of his hand, and then
looks at the back of bis baud to see the per
spiration which his momentary fright has
called forth.
—Since Forney became a candidate for
the United States Senate he has largely en
gaged in what the vulgar calls the “licking
of boots.’’ The latest lick is the following :
“Progress in all things, intellectual and
material, is a chief element in the creed and
conduct of such men as Charles Sumner and
Thaddeus Stevens.’’
—Shoddy has achieved another triumph
During the debate iu the House on the Tariff
bill, the Iowa Thersites, Mr. Grinnell, moved
to increase the duty on shoddy from twelve
to twenty-five ceuts per pound, but the sbod-
dyits made a gailaut fight, and the amend
ment was rejected.
—Tlte Russian General Mouravieff, of un
enviable memory, through his conduct in the
Polish insurrection, lias lately disappear^'!,
and there is every reason to believe that he
has been assassinated by bis enemies, whose
name was legion.
—A fight lias occurred between the friend
ly Indians and the Apaches, in which the
latter lost BO killed aud 30 prisoners. Eight
hundred White Mountain Apaches, of both
sexeF, are encamped near Fort Godwin,
receiving government rations.
—A Sunday school was recently organized
in Henry county, Mo., but the Radicals in
the neighborhood requested the teachers
to take tbo test oath, and the school was
abandoned.
—The Messrs. Edge have offered to pro
vide a public display of fireworks, if the
Mayor and Comptroller will use their in
fluence to have the bills paid by tbe next
Legislature. The offer has teen accepted.
—Mary Ann Fagan, a servant girl of l. r
was beaten by her brutal mistress in Phila
delphia, aud jumped from a tbree-story
window to avoid the Jazcbel, breaking her
ankle.
—Several rich Venetians have subscribed
a bum sufficient to buy an annuity of three
hundred and sixty-five francs, to be given
to the first Italian soldier who sets foot in
Venice.
— The Boston Journal says the hay crop,
an important matter for New England,
promises to be good and the'vied of fruit
will be millions of dollars in advance of last
year.
—The negroes about Newbern, N. C.,
wbn live on Government rations, struck for
white sugar instead of brown. The
sympathizing Bureau agent ordered white
immediately.
—A duel with knives took place at In
dianapolis between two eight-year-old
youths, one of whom was thought to be
mortally wounded.
—A couple were recently re-married iu
Naw Ha veil who had been divorced 25
years, the husband having had a second wife
in the meantime.
—Up to the 27th ult>, 119,624 emigrants
arrived at the port of New York". The
number to the same date last year was 70,-
