THE BABY.
BY MBS. WILSON.
A little waif upon the sea—
A little wandering ray of light—
A little world of thought and glee—
A star for one—not you nor me
Shining but for one night.
A laughing, bright, germander eye.
Emitting little sparks of love,
Tearful or playful—tell me why ?
It knows as well as you or I
Old hearts with tears to move.
Sweet rosebud Ups and dimpled cheek—
God bless thee, Uttle Kate!
Though beautiful, yet thou art weak;
Then, through God's counsel, learn to speak
A thing of love—not hate.
“Star for one night”—ah, well! they come
And set at evening twilight oft;
Set, but ascend the guttering domo
To welcome kindred spirits home
Like sentinels aloft.

A low hut rests iu Lookout’s shade
As rots it9 moss-grown roof away,
While sun-down's glories softly fade,
Closing another weary day;
The battle’s din is heard no more—
No more the hunted stand at bay—
The breezes through the lowly door
Swing mute a coat uf faded grey,
A tattered reUc of the fray—
A threadbare coat of faded grey.

’Tis hanging on the rough log wall
Near to the loot of a widow's bed,
By a white plume and well-worn shawl—
His gift—the happy morn they wed.
By tue wee slip their dead child wore—
The one they gave the name of May,
By her rag doll and pinafore—
l>y right it’s there, that coat of grey,
A red-fleck’d relic of the fray—
An armless coat of faded grey.

Her aU of life now drapes that wall;
Poor and patient still she waits
On God’s good time to gently call
Her, too, within the jewelfcd gates;
And aU she craves is here to die—
To part from these, and pas3 away
To join her loves eternally
That wore the slip —the coal of givy,
I lie eheU-torn relic of the fray -
Her soldier’s coat of faded grey.

Display of Scarlkt at Saratoga.—A
letter-writer at the American Baden-Baden
writes as follows :
A woman from New York has taken a,
house on the same street where his club-'
house is located. It is elegautly fitted up.
It has a liar of choicest wines and liquors.,
A hop is held each night at which men ire
admitted on the payment of $5. Young
women, quite pretty nni well-dressed, par
ade the streets and call at the hotel*, and
with haudsomely printed circulars call men
into this new place of dissipation. The cir
cular holds out the price of our hops, the
music, the wines, the refreshments, as does
a bill of fare iu a restaurant. Two lady of
the mansion keeps a four in hand team. The
outfit is splendid. The horses are stately
and aristocratic. A driver holds the reins
dressed in livery. The lackeys sit behind in
white coats of immense breadth and buttons
big as half dollars, and otherwise dressed in
the most aristocratic style- Alone, in the
open carnage, the owner sits in all her glory
and is driven up and down, in and out the
town, and of course is the centre of general
observation. Tbe thing has made and will
make a profound sensation here. Men jjav
been waylaid by girls pretending, to ban
lost.their way. Men have been enticed into
•Uie'house under various pretences, and tbe
bold, defiaut. open 'business-like way the 1
house ismanaged strikes all with Mtoniah--
ment.
