SAVANNAH, WEDNESDAY, JULY 11, 18C6.
IN GENERAL.
—The Cincinnati “Gazette,” dyigg for
some new sensation, and ready to do any
thing to keep up the Northern fever and ex
citement against the South, insinuates that
both Generals Harrison and Taylor were
murdered. As Mr. Webster once suggested,
so we are almost tempted to say, that he
who is so ready to impute to others the
commission of such a crime, would probably
be one of the first to commit it.
—A destructive fire occurred about mid
night of Monday at the livery stable of T.
W. Jackson, in Brooklyn, N. Y., by which a

—A Turin paper contains the following:
“Miss Grant, a relative of the gallant Arner
b an General, has presented to Garibaldi,
through an officer of the First regiment, the

a generous act is a proof that this amiable
lady is in every respect worthy her illustrious
family, aud it deserves to be mentioned with
profound gratitude.”
—Latniraude, the alleged French Cashier,
under arrest in New York, and on examina

the Deputy Marshal into a hotel, where the

The New \ork Express doubts the drug
ging and intimates that the officer was
bribed.
—A Paris letter writer, intending to inform
the readers of the London Star that war has
begun in Europe, breaks out in this fashion ;
“Maddened by the fever of the hour, myri
ads of men are now plying the engines of
death ; to and fro rock the billows of men
leaving the soil, wherever'they meet, deluged
with their blood.”
—A casket ol diamonds aud other valuable
jewels was found near Nashville on the 27th
Their value is estimated at eighty thousand
dollars. Samuel J. Ringold was the finder.
There were no marks found which could in
dicate who the jewels belonged to. They
had evidently been lying for several years
just under the surface of the ground.
—The Civil Rights law was up before
justice of the peace in Indianapolis, Iud., in
the suit of n negro against a street rail
road company, for refusing to give him a
seat in the cars. The justice decided that
the company had a light to classify passen
gers.

sheaths, absorbing a million and a half ol
the credit.
—Alex. H. Stephens is announced to de
liver a lecture in Indianapolis the coming
season. Among the other names on the list
for the course we observe those of Fred.
Douglas, Horatio Seymour, Wendell Phillips
John B. Gough, and P. T. Barnum. The
Jndianapolitians are bent upon variety.
—The last number of the Bainbridge Ar
gus gives a list of debts, amounting to $20,-
000 due from the merchants of Bainbridge to
Northern houses previous to the war, which
have been settled in full by paying from 25
to 50 per cent. This is handsome.
—Francis A. Boyd, a negro, has applied
to the United States Court, at Louisville, for
a copyright on a book, a poem in three parts,
entitled “To Columbians,” and dedicated to
Lincoln, Grant, and Butler.
